Then why are you trying to read more into it than that? It's the name of the wine, nothing more.

I agree; I really don't want to go through "former lover" crap :? heard enough of "former bedders" from Zevran <_<

I'm wondering why this sort of complaint should keep me from doing this in the future, and I really can't imagine it. My version of "fantasy romance" does not extend to "you're the only person they've ever loved or will love EVER". Sorry.

So.

He DID have a former lover? Or no?

That comment was not specific to Fenris. I'm not saying he's a romance, or that he would even be appropriate as a romance. I wouldn't suggest trying to read behind everything I say-- or don't say, as the case may be. I find it interesting that you guys are so attached to him (as to Varric, in the other thread) but not every character is going to be a romance and not every character is going to be a Living God/Flesh Golem/Werewolf/Lost Arlathan Whatever/Demon Hybrid abomination... as if the character's evident background was't enough. Just because I don't disprove every theory doesn't make it automatically so.

Just sayin'.

In response to a few questions I've seen in the past few pages:

* Fenris has an accent. It's a bit unusual, but I'm not going to say what it is or you're likely to pinpoint his VA in about 30 seconds. And we can't have that.

* I wouldn't make too big a deal of his touch-causes-pain thing. It's more of an aversion than actual physical agony. You'll see when you play, though honestly he doesn't dwell on it at all. It's not central to his story.

* Regardless of what his story involves, I'm sure you'll find Fenris fun. Just like Varric. Let's all just get along and not stake out imaginary territory, shall we? That would be swell.

Fenris: I do not look like him.

Hawke: Well, you have lighter hair with darker skin.

Fenris: My skin is not dark.

Isabela: And you're an elf! All you elves look alike to me.

Fenris: That's ridiculous.

Isabela: Where it counts, anyhow.

FenrisDo I want to even ask what that means?

Varric: I wouldn't.

Hawke: Of course you would.

Varric: It's true. I'm a weak, weak man.

God, I know, right?  Mayhaps David Gaider watches True Blood? :D

I do, but if I was going to wish for a True Blood actor to VO a character it would definitely be Allan Hyde.

Someone posted a preview from Germany that said Fenris was a mage!

I have no idea how they came up with that. Fenris is still not a mage-- not even a sort-or-mage or an arcane warrior or anything like that.

Does Matt Bomer have a distinctive voice? Distinctive looks, sure, but I'm not sure that's useful for a VA. :)

On the subject of romance scenes:

(Hawke and Fenris go into tent)

Cassandra: Well?

Varric: Well what?

Cassandra: What happened in the tent?

Varric:
  How should I know?

Cassandra:
Your the one telling this story,  wern't you there?

Varric:
Well yeah, I was there, but not there. That would just have been creepy. (Deep Inhale) Anyway moving on...
(game cuts to scene outside of tent)

Or he's very explicit about what follows.

After the cutscene:

Cassandra: You... seem to know a lot about Hawke's personal life.

Varric: I have people.

Cassandra: Did... you say "people"? Or "peephole"?

Is it safe to say that his accent is one that comes from Europe? I heard some people speculating South African and Middle Eastern, etc.

It's not a strong accent, but it's definitely an accent. Beyond that, I'm not really going to give anymore hints. You may just have to wait to hear him to find out. Posted Image

I sang "Bring Me To Life" on Rock Band today in my best German Nihilist voice.

It sounded nothing like Fenris.

Ser Gaider, you sing Evanescence songs?

Only as the German Nihilist (from the Big Lebowski).

Did it actually work, can you sing like that in Rock Band? Or did it hear your German Nihilist and reject it?

It worked fine (on Medium, anyhow).

Not that it mattered, since the world is already doomed anyhow.

I think he'll "get" most humor. He just probably won't find it very funny.

Varric: ...and then the innkeeper says, "That's a nug? I thought that was my wife!"

Fenris: I see.

Varric: What? They don't have jokes where you come from? And here I thought I was being charming.

Fenris: No, I've just heard it before. My master told it to his guests once, while using me as a footstool.

Varric: I, uh... he did? Really?

Fenris: No, not really.

Carver: Ha! Burn! He got you that time, Varric!

Not very. I don't think Carver would ever say "Burn!", for example.

I'm going to intervene.

First off, nobody owns this thread. This is not a place to hang out, and treat others who come here as if they are visitors. You are all visitors, and attempting to control the discussion is just going to get you into trouble.

If someone wants to talk about Fenris, then they may do so. If someone wants to complain about him, then they may do so. If someone wants to squee and post fan art, then they may do so. In all three cases all we ask is that you remain civil to each other.

If the venom that's persisted over the last few pages continues, I'll lock the thread down. If you feel you cannot participate without keeping a civil tongue, even with those you disagree, then I suggest you remove yourself voluntarily.

Thanks.

You know, they should just make "Bioware: the dating sim" and start telling people if they want a romance simulator, play that game...if they want a good game that may (or may not) have romances, then play game X (be it ME or DA or whatever :) and be surprised with any and all relationships :)

In my opinion, romances don't have a lot of impact unless they occur in a context. That's why almost every action movie ever made has the hero getting the girl. Fantasy is fantasy, and romance being a part of adventure is a part of that. As I once said in an interview, we throw out many hooks on the off chance that one of them will stick and make the player care about something... rromances work for some, not for others. If you don't care about something, then we've failed. If we segregate out things to care about simply because others claim not to buy into it, then all we're really doing is reducing the number of hooks in our toolbox.

So, no, I don't think that's a good idea. Even if I could get behind the idea of doing a game where romances did take center stage. Considering the massive sales that "casual" games like the Sims get, wouldn't it be a shock to the self-proclaimed "elite RPG" demographic to find themselves taking third place behind not only the "console action" crowd but the so-called "gamer girls" as well?

I don't think any demographic can be summed up quite so neatly, but can you imagine? Perish the thought. ;)

I don't know why, but I was under the impression the companions are all at a table somewhere discussing battle plans, and Fenris is freaking out over something, like a bad idea or whatever.

I don't know why I got a such a specific scenario out of that.

Actually, what you'll find when you go to speak to your companions in their homes that they're sometimes engaged in other things... occasionally you'll find them in mid-conversation with your other companions, who are visiting them also. One of the advantages to knowing exactly where conversations are going to occur is being able to stage them in interesting ways.

Fenris: I see where this is going...

Isabela: They improve your eyesight, too? Marvelous!

Fenris: Put some pants on, woman.

Hmm.

So a "yes" would mean tears... and a "no" would mean even more tears.

Excellent. I'd call that a win/win.
