Well, you didn't actually die in the NWN2 ending-- you just got super close. Bishop definately died, I'm positive Grobnar, Sand, and Qara died, I think Neeshka survived, Ammon and Khelgar both definately survived (you see Ammon again in MotB in Thay, and see Khelgar again in SoZ as the new Knight-Commander of Crossroad Keep). I can't remember what happened to Elanee, and I believe there is a rumor that in SoZ there is evidence that Three Word Vocabulary Casivir survived (GRRRRRR! Why can't it DIIIIIIIE?!)

I still have yet to muster up the cajones to do a playthrough in which Alistair sacrifices himself, or even breaks up with the Warden...I just couldn't take it man!!! Posted Image

I actually did that on accident. On one of my elfy playthroughs my elf hated morrigan so she told her to take a hike before the final battle. Course I didn't know at the time he would sacrifice himself. Saddest part was when I talked to Wynne after the battle she was all like "Things could not of turned out better" or something to that effect. There was a reply like "Alistair would have wanted it better. Almost broke into tears right there.

-SPOILERS OF NWN2!! BEWARE!!-

I believe Sand survived if he wasn't the one to betray you TT.TT Elanee was seen under a huge rock, unmoving. But she coulda been unconcious, so...I dunno but she's alive if she left you after dealing with those druids. Qara's definitely dead (PARTEH!!!). I cried a river when I saw Bishop TT-TT Neeshka's alive if she fought against the geas Garrus put her under or whatever it was...Grobnar might have died protecting the Construct but might have lived if you didn't have it with you...Casavir supposedly died after being buried by rocks from holding a doorway open but his abck gave out...but yes, there's a rumor in Storm of Zehir that he might be alive (BLAST THEM FOR NOT LETTING US TO SEE AT LEAST!!! ...I was curious D:)

I'll avoid tragedy if it's possible to avoid it but I wouldn't be terribly thrilled about a flowers and kittens and rainbows kind of ending.

At least, in any case other than Alistair's. Mostly because I got the impression he'd enjoy the flowers and kittens and rainbows, and to deny the man his fluff is to be too cruel for words.

Thane's bizarre alien philosophy made it extremely difficult for me to get the tragic vibes. :\\

Thane's romance is enough tragic romance for me. tbh, from the moment he said "I'm dying." I was determined to not romance him. My boyfriend talked me into doing it anyway, and I am glad he did, but on the other hand part of me still wishes I'd just left that where it lay.

I'm not a very firm believer in 'better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all'. But I've been an all-or-nothing girl for a very long time. When I was no longer the highest GPA in my class, I stopped caring about all of it as much. I know that's childish, but meh. It is how it is.

Thane's romance is definently my favorite of the ME games. Specially before the last battle. It's less "I just want to bed you," and more "I just want to spend as much time with you as possible because I love you,". Brings tears to the eyes:(.

Gets worse after you read his letter during the "Lair of the Shadow Broker" DLC...I only romanced him on my second playthrough because I wanted to go with Garrus...But Garrus' romance was kinda...disappointing for me.

@Psuedo But what about a DOUBLE rainbow ending? Hmm?

Nah, I wouldn't want it to be too sweet either, like "then Fenris and Hawke got married, had a bunch of little rugrats and lived happily ever after" My Hawkette will be kicking ass long after the events of DA2...I just want Fenris to be there takin names right next to her Posted Image

I agree completely (that's why I love Thane's romance because it's so emotionally charged and beautiful)
In some ways what we know of Fenris's character reminds me a bit of Thane...

I think it was only because of Thane's philosophy that I could put up with the darkness in his romance. Well that and he was a man of faith in a sci-fi setting and that really speaks to me. His romance is definitely one of my favorites. I can't decide between him and Valen.

But I still don't want to see him or Fenris dead. If Fenris is even a LI, which is still very much up in the air. But if Thane dies in ME3, my drive for the entire trilogy will be very much depleted. None of the other romances have worked for me. I tried Kaidan. I tried Garrus. I didn't think Kaidan clicked w/ my FemShep and Garrus is much more like a brother to her. And Jacob. lol.

So if Fenris is a LI and does die, I would be quite upset. I don't want fluffy happy bunnies, but I think there are a lot of shades of grey between happily ever after and dead.

To paraphrase Vader, I find the lack of faith in sci-fi disturbing. The ridiculous assumption that all faith will evaporate when a race achieves spaceflight is laughable at best. Pretentious at worst. I believe even Thane's writer said he found it odd that faith is always glossed over in sci-fi. I agree with him. There are going to be some people who turn to that regardless of how fast we can fly our ships and what aliens we can ogle.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I get the feeling that the end of DA2, Hawke will be on the run, hiding somewhere in Kirkwall, or dead. The other 5 companions (I'm not counting Varric, we know he's alive by the end and being interrogated by Cassandra) I suspect are also running, in hiding with Hawke, in hiding somewhere else, or dead also.

I'd compare Fenris to Bruce Banner (from The Hulk) He's a genuinely nice guy its just that sometimes when you push him he runs the risk of turning into a whirlwind of destruction. On the one hand, it makes him a very effective warrior, but it also puts him off from the company of others.

Twilight is a poor example of a Character vs. Self conflict like this, simply from the fact that to me, the books aren't as well-written as they could be.

Hawke:
Your quite calm in battle you know that?

Fenris: There is a reason for that. The mantras, the catchesims, all of it serves as a way to remain calm under pressure.

Hawke: Fenris, you usually calm and collected, why would combat change that?

Fenris: Let me tell you a story. After receiving these (points at lyrium brands) I spent a week in my cell on the brink of death, my mind teetering on the edge of madness from lyrium poisoning. Someone, something, I have no idea what it was came to me. Took hold of me. When it let go I was outside of my cell, and the walls were painted with the blood of a maniple of my Master's men.

Hawke: Is that how you escaped from him?

Fenris: Not at first. After that day my Master applauded my prowess and set upon using me as an instrument of terror. Setting me upon those who he considered to be his enemy. Each time that thing took over I'd find myself somewhere that I found unfamiliar, with no recollection of what had happened. The guards outside of my cell took to calling me Fenris, because they equated me to the werewolves of myth. I hated the feeling of it, being a prisoner in both my home, and in my own body. So I taught myself to control my body, to keep whatever it is that visits me in check.

Hawke: It could be a rage demon that haunts you, I could go into the Fade and.-

Fenris: No. Demon or no, this being is a part of who and what I am, I allow it to exert its power from time to time, and in exchange it lets me remain in control. Thus balance is maintained, and it is through my meditations that it remains as such.

Hawke:
That degree of control is unbelieveable, its a skill that destroys all conventional schools of magical study its--

Fenris: Something that no one should be able to do, and this is why the knowlege of what I am must be protected, Maker knows what would happen if the Circle or my Master were able to create more like me. I assume that my secret is safe with you?

Hawke: It is my friend. Although I wouldn't mind you teaching me those meditations someday.

Fenris: Perhaps someday I will.

Bishop's ending broke my heart too, but then again, the tragedy of Bishop is probably a crucial reason why he made such an impression on me. That's the only reason why I might like a tragic ending for Fenris. The best endings in stories are often the ones that break your heart and leave you wanting more, after all.

By tragic ending, though, I'd be more inclined to one where Hawke and Fenris are separated somehow, not an ending where one of them dies. An epic ending could be one where Hawke disappears/is taken away (why, I dunno, just go with me on this one), and if you romanced Fenris we get a cutscene where he says he's going after her (and I suppose if you romanced a different character or established an enduring friendship with someone else, they would be doing the same thing).

I also didn't care too much for Thane's romance. It wasn't the fact he's tragic that turned me off, in so much as the ways he was tragic.

Thane: "... I'm dying."
Shep: "Oh? Ok."
Thane: "... My wife died."
Shep: "Oh.... ok..."
Thane: "Actually, I inadvertently killed her."
Shep: "..... okaaayy..."
Thane: "... And my son hates me."
Shep: "....."
Thane: "... And I live every memory as if it is happening now, the pangs of pain burned into my mind over and over and over agai-"
Shep: "... Y'know, I think I prefer turians who act like batman."
Thane: "... Indeed."

This is my point. Thane's writer wasn't even a religious man, but he can see how important it is to species on a whole. Saying it will become unimportant is a leap of logic that makes no sense. It's never made sense. You can't convince me that an entire world will wholesale -down to the last man, woman, and child- will abandon religion because of advancements. Less so when you start getting into other worlds, other cultures. Then you get into faiths that don't even contain gods/goddesses and it makes even less sense for them to be abandoned.

But. This all has nothing to do with Fen. And I have a fic chapter glaring at me for attention.
