What gives? So elves are a bit taller now. Sounds fine to me, less cliche even.

I feel the same. I prefer taller guys anyway.

This. ._. Having to look down at my man would be a turn off.

*prepares to be broiled alive by half of this thread and all of the Varric one* I have lived a good life...

That's actually the way I wanted to put it, but I was afraid. You're my hero, Maera!

BTW. Gaider gave a LOT of freaking indepth information. Talk about ridiculously awesome. Now he just needs to cap off the ice cream with an impromptu dialogue, and the whole thread will crack under the sweet deal.

I've personally been wondering if the elves will play a larger part in this game than they did in DA:O, if their lore will be revealed in greater ways instead of being left in perpetual mystery.

The one question that I have for Dave, is how do you go about creating a character like Fenris? Is the major plot of the story hammered out before characters are introduced, or are general character profiles introduced before moving along with the story?

There are two things that need to exist when creating a companion:

1) A place in the story.

2) A hook.

#1 doesn't always happen if #2 is really strong, so sometimes we forget... and then we regret it later on. A place in the story means that there is something going on in the plot (or one of the plots) that is very central to what that character is about. They care about it, so you do too. Plots can be abstract things, especially when they relate to a world you have only a vicarious stake in, so followers serve to personify those conflicts.

But #2 is enough. There has to be a hook-- for me, not the player. Something that I want to say with a character, either a moment I know I want them to have, a twist on a romantic archetype, a thing that they have which makes me excited to write them. If there isn't a hook, no matter what we do the character will be boring. That can happen, too, in which case you have to create a hook. For yourself. Nobody else needs to care about it.

For Morrigan, the hook was the Dark Ritual. I knew that moment would exist almost before the rest of the game did. Alistair didn't start off having a hook, and I realized it after I began writing him. He was a distrustful, surly sort and I hated it. So... what to do? I wanted to make his dialogue fun, the sort of person who guys wouldn't hate because he was a buddy. Since I was watching BtVS at the time, it came to me when I was (predictably) analyzing Joss Whedon's method of delivering dialogue. Anachronistic, sure, but could it be done in fantasy...? I wanted to try.

There was a hook for Fenris, but I can't tell you what it is yet. It's a spoiler. The tattoos came later (and, amusingly, before I even saw Jack), but there was an element to Fenris that made me want to write him. His #1 is also significant, which is important as I mandated that every DA2 character would need a #1. It's a more personal story, after all, without a "YOU MUST SAVE THE WORLD NO YOU MUST" thing going on-- and thus the ciphers are that much more important.

Everything else after that fact is just mechanics and plot documents. And finding the voice. That's separate and not always easy, and sometimes doesn't come until you hit the Moment-- which could happen right away or halfway through writing the character.

"Alistair didn't start off having a hook, and I realized it after I began writing him" So he wasn't a prince to begin with, or was that the hook that was added later?

This is amazing! :'D
And I think it is unfinished because he has no lyrium scars on his arms...

Thanks David for answering my VA-question. Was really wondering about that, since you said in the Merrill thread that you had requested her VA (or I think it was about Merrill). So I was wondering why you were the one who has a say in the VA choice of a character that you did not write.

Elves about the same height as humans now? I actually like that, not that I hated in Origins that elves were shorter, but taller sounds good to me. <3

And no shoes for elves? Good, then Merrill will not try to steal Isabela's boots. <3

Even though we learned little about Fenris with your answers, you still managed to get me even more excited (didn't think that was possible).

Also, Cha-grinned goat spilled that one while we were on the fenris live stream painting..

never said that. I don't believe I said anything about LIs in the stream chat, aside from my hopes that Varric will be one. What I said, and linked to, was that Mike Laidlaw had mentioned that if he had his way, we'd hear femHawke before February. That can be found here. That's all. I wouldn't spread information so definitive, like "LIs will be announced before February," unless I could back it up.

XDDDD That would be "Ego" in Fraud's terms!

I'm going to say that that would actually be "Id" in Freud's terms. The ego sensors and restrains the id, so you might actually want to look past the ego to find your inner perv.

Just sayin'.

I'd be willing to mod. Haven't had anything to do with an LJ community in forever, but I'll still volunteer.

Both of those pictures are beautiful. I love them.

I'm in awe of people who can draw/paint/photoshop/whatever life-like pictures. When I took the train to college, I used to practise drawing my friend (she was usually alseep) on the way back. By the end, I drew some pretty good ones, but they never had the 'real' feeling about them. Maybe because I never shaded or coloured them... there's a thought.

Anyway, Fenris. I personally don't mind whether he's taller or shorter than me. I'll love him all the same. I'm also kinda glad that he's not going to wear shoes. It makes him stand out more in my mind.

Oh, and what new info did we get this time?

- Elves don't wear shoes (something with the artist having a thing when it comes to shoes and elves).
- Gaider is not sure, but he believes elves are about the same height as humans -> Fenris slightly taller than FemHawke

- Some info on how he creates a character, really interesting if you like that sort of stuff. :)

You are welcome.

I'm really surprised that his tattoos came later actually, so I doubt that they will be very plot-related. Now I think that him being a former slave of a Tevinter magister is the bigger issue.

Now that we have more info, I'm só excited -> not sure my brain (and heart) can take much more info. :'D

I don't know. I've never compared the two. I think elves are now the same height as humans, so he'd be a bit taller than FemHawke, but I could be wrong.

2. Will Fenris ever wear shoes?

No. The artists have this thing about elves and shoes. Don't get me started.
