That piece of music is used to convey the despair of a character who finds her long lost lover only to realize he doesn't remember her.
That could either apply to Fenris like a super Carth syndrome which I imagine would infuriate many people, or over a time skip if he's romanceable with the PC, maybe they get separated and his amnesia kicks in again...

Dear god, Lost Odyssey..... I liked that game a bit, actually. I read every single one of the short stories. Those damn stories made me cry more in that game than several of the cutscenes.

PS: the human/elves height thread pretty much confirms an elven romance and the lack of a dwarf one. Ser Gaider said that it's easier to animate 2 bodies of similar height (romance scenes anyone?) and in one of his posts he used the term "potential elf love interest".

She knew what she had to do. He knew it had to be done. She had to kill him, Fenris, the man she loved, all for the greater good. Hawke's body trembled as she held the dagger in her hand, moving towards the elf, who just watched her sorrowfully. She hesitated, the dagger inches from the tanned skin that covered his chest. Her eyes stung as she looked up into his own, those wonderful moss-green eyes that always looked at her with love. A tear slid down her cheek. She couldn't do it. She couldn't kill this man...but she had to. She had to save her world. It would be better this way, she told herself, save him from being used once more, and you can join him in the Fade when your own time comes. But her mind selfishly told her also, that the world would mean nothing to her without him in it. Love is ultimately selfish, a cool, collected part of her mind murmured. You must choose between saving your love, and saving all else.
"Hawke..." Fenris brought a hand to her cheek, wiping away her tear with his thumb. "Just do it. If you don't end this now, you never will be able to. You know that." she laughed bitterly.
"I know," she muttered. "But...oh, Maker, Fenris, I love you too much."
"And that's why you have to do this. To let go." He wrapped his arms around her, pressing his lips to her forhead. Hawke nodded numbly, and breathed deeply, before squeezing her eyes shut and driving the blade into his heart. He stiffened at the pain, obviously biting back a cry. He quickly began to tremble, and Hawke kept her eyes closed, head pressed against his chest, turned away from the wound she'd inflicted. He died in her arms. How soon after she stabbed him, she didn't know, as she lost track of the seconds as she began to sob. When she'd finally become able to dry her eyes, she looked up at his face. A small, peaceful smile was on his face, his eyes glassy and half-covered by his eye-lids. She pressed her lips against his one last time, feeling oddly empty inside.

If you're looking for reasons, one big one is the animation part, as you mention. Any animations involving characters interacting becomes more complicated when models are of different heights. We'd like to have more interaction. Therefore reducing the number of variables makes perfect sense.

Another reason is that we don't need elves to be a lot shorter in order to look different from humans. They already look different, now. Combined with them being very thin, making them also a lot smaller would risk them looking like children. If you really want to complain about something being changed, the alteration in their overall style is the the big one. Their height... yeah, not so much. Unless you have a thing about the height of a potential elven romance, I guess, which it appears some people do. i get that some people interpreted the height of their model in Origins as some kind of statement, but that was never intended to be the case.
