From the Dragon Age wiki: Writer David Gaider has stated that the Tevinter Imperium is loosely influenced by the real-world Byzantine Empire, heir of the Roman Empire.

If he, or who ever decided it, based the language off of that also, Latin was their offical language until it changed to Greek. ....Which is why I'm hoping for the VA who did Ezio's voice in AC. I could listen to him tell me how to put a tree house together and it would amaze me to no end.

This is why I wondered about whether the VA's nationality has to correspond with the accent of the character he/she is voicing.  Altough he is American, I would be just fine with Ezio's VA voicing Fenris Posted Image

*off topic: I'm tempted to name the male rogue I'm creating for my second playthrough 'Ezio.'*

I read the wiki before.. this is why I think its turkish.. cause of the map!

The reason that red part started to shrink - in Anatolia specifically - is because the Turks showed up, having invaded from the East.

The Qunari are the Ottoman Turkish analog in Thedas because they are outsiders with a different religion and philosophy when compared to Thedas.  The dwindling, once glorious Tevinter Imperium is the Thedas' version of the declining Eastern Roman Empire due to the fragmentation of its former holdings (The Western Roman Empire would be the nation-states in existence now, such as Ferelden and Orlais) and the invasion of the Qunari.

It's a political metaphor, not an ethnic one.

I didn't realize drawing this would cause drama. It was a parody on character interactions and rivalries, not something to egg people on. :c

That wasn't what caused the drama...it was this comment:

You know what I'd like, but I know it's not going to happen. The guy from Lost who played the Iraqi soldier, Naveen Andrews. An accent like that would be very neat.

Nnoo... Its SPECULATION on his accent! Since tevinter is based off the empire, therfore I think its turkish! :wizard: Magic of history and google!

I explained why your concept of "history" is flawed.  It doesn't follow.  If anyone in Thedas - by your logic - is going to speak with a Turkish accent it is the Qunari.  But your reasoning doesn't follow, and they don't.

I don't know of any male actors with unique accents who've VA'd for any well-known RPGs. So I can't make speculations. :( I secretly hope for a Russian accent though, or German.

Im still hoping for a former Austrian-American governor of a very populous state for his VA :)

I have Total Recall running in the background while I am working. If Arnold is the VA I will always imagine Fenris running around with a towel on his head.

Myself and another poster (who I can't remember, but am by no means going to go back and try and find it in this morass :) talked a bit about Fenris and his memory.  The other poster (a guy I think, so that narrows it down considerably) mentioned something like if Fenris willingly lost his memory, which got us talking about Total Recall, which got me on the wagon for Ahnold as VA! :)

I am digging through my collection of movies for anything that has framed narrative in it. Next up is the Usual Suspects and then LA Confidential (just because I love Kevin Spacey). It is super far-fetched but I would love Keanu Reeves as a VA for Fenris.

Hmm...I think maybe a slight Italian accent would be great. Not as heavenly as Russian would be, but still nice. ;)

I wonder if Tevinter's language is Latin. Ooh, I hope it is! :D

But nobody here is making it a race either I think Dawn said off handedly that the Fenris thread might pass the Varric thread, that's it. I'm not understanding all the under handed snark and hostility all of a sudden

Tricky, you have to admit that it could be seen as a bit of a challenge to the Varric thread....

Even so is it really that serious that the troops need to start coming over  with snark and backhanded comments just because someone said that? I'm sure it'd be pretty annoying everytime you guys said something pertaining to this thread and like 5 people came storming over every time lol. Secondly who flippin cares? People just talk more frequently over here it's just a number there's no need for this all this.

All I was saying is that (a) it wasn't an offhand comment and (B) asking you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and see how it could be taken a different way than you portrayed it...

I don't think it's serious and I, personally, wouldn't mind if some of you guys came to the other thread...we do have some nice Varric-Fenris stuff going on and, while we do try to share as best we can, sometimes things slip through and we don't share everything with you guys...

I'm snarking with backhanded comments because of all the stupid questions and self-indulgence drowning out the genuinely interesting questions and well-thought out speculation. I don't care about Varric. Plain enough?

Seriously in The Day the World Ended or something, he doesn't even blink. It's creepy!

Arcanum, the official language of the Imperium, was designed to be a potential distant ancestor to English.

  • Ei vento nai mordoi deid: I don't want to kill you.
  • Tir-ev-e ei-l-ud degit-ud: Pull my finger.
In the second example, the (-l) is the genitive, or possessive,
marker. (-ud) is an accusative, or direct object, marker. There are 2
allomorphs: (-d) and (-ud) based upon epenthesis to avoid consonant
clusters. Stacking of these affixes is an attested pattern in some
languages. The suffix (-ev) is an imperative, or command, marker.
The suffix (-e) is a second-person agreement marker. English has a
sort of "vestigial" agreement system, especially in the stronger old
forms of high-frequency verbs like "be". Consider: I "am" but you "are"
and he "is". Or in some dialects of course: I "be", you "be", we "be"
etc. English word order has rendered ambiguity of role assignment almost
a non-risk, so we don't really need agreement. The language above,
however, has it; the (-e) tells you that the subject of the verb is 2nd
person ("you").

It sort of sounds like Latin, you can read some Tevinter words by reading the descriptions of any runes in Origins or Awakening. There's also a list on the Wiki that shows these names.

You do realize that a comment like this is trolling, right?  You could just post something on-topic, or not post at all, but you are trying to keep inciting reaction.  Positive comments lead to positive discussion.  It can be fun!

And I fully support you naming him such.  Ezio is just....*fans self*

Italian, Spanish and most other languages, including English, derived from Latin.  It is also known as a dead language, which is why I thought it would be cool if they loosely based the Tevinter language from it.  Sort of fitting.  I'm just thinking to myself though.  And I'm not quite certain but I believe AC was a mixture of both Latin and Italian.  According to the Latin books I have and the phrases I've checked into, that is.

Back to Fenris love, though.  I'm just a diehard Ezio fan....because of his friggin voice.  Posted Image

*hopes for people to start ignoring the Varric trolls so they go away...I sure hope we don't troll over there.  I"ve never even been there.

The french thing:  Try learning French up in Canada (Quebecois) for elementary and high school, doing an undergrad degree (where you need a foreign language) in Arkansas with a prof that focused on Parisien, and then doing a grad degree in Louisiana (where you still need a foreign language)  Laissez les bonnes temp roulez! Posted Image

The edit thing:  went back and read some of the posts and, if you step back and read it objectively, there wasn't really any trolling going on (at least what I classify as trolling)

Thirdly (and off topic from the other two):  you have to admit that there can be a sense of frustration on the part of regular posters (regular to the read of the DA2 discussion, just not to this thread) when they ask a serious and really interesting philosophical question about Fenris and it gets buried 2-3 pages rather quickly within an hour or 2

Not all Dalish have Welsh accents, Merrill sounds Australian according to Gaider.

I would laugh throughout the game if we ended up with an "Elfinator".
