Well, sten *was* the stoic type..

Depends on what you mean by stoic.  Hence my question.

Oh, I know what the original stoics mean, I mean the modern version. No felly emotion deal.

One does not have to be a qunari to be stoic-like.

I fell in love with Sten the moment I learned that he took a cookie from a kid.  Someone remember his exact words?

  • Carroll: "Hmm... I don't know. Y'know, I am feeling a little peckish, though."
  • Sten: "Parshaara! Here! Munch on these if you like."
  • Carroll: "Ooh, cookies!"
  • Sten: "I am content to part with them if it saves us from this fool."
  • Warden: "Where'd you get those?"
  • Sten: "There was a child-- a fat, slovenly thing-- in
the last village we passed. I relieved him of these confections. He
    didn't need more."
  • Warden: "You stole cookies from a child?"
  • Sten: "For his own good."
  • Carroll: "Mmm, yummy. You sratch my back, I'll scratch yours, yes? We can go across to the tower now, if you really want.
Sorry that I'm late :<

This question of stoicism is a good one, and even the classic representation of it could work here. I wonder if it's a bit of a mesh of the two? I'd say modern idea of stoic is one who lacks emotion, but the more classical idea is one who has incredible emotional self-control and are extremely rational and ethical. As a former slave, stoicism would be very apt, since it espouses equality of people. In the end, if they adopt a more classical approach I would assume people wouldn't even realize it. They'd say "oh Fenris doesn't share his feelings he's stoic" and think you're bringing him out of his shell when he starts talking about positive emotions or humanistic things, but really, those are all in character with a stoic persona, not "bringing him out of his shell" at all.

This is just me, but I think the best example of a modern definition of stoic/stoicism would be Vulcans and their system of closing themselves off from emotion.

Which is interesting as they started off as being portrayed as very emotional people who'd mastered their emotions. If you look at the original Star Trek, you'll see Spock and Surak arguing, both obvious very passionate while at the same time in complete control of themselves.

Later on, they were interpreted as being emotionless, so we got portrayals where they were basically pointy eared androids.

Posted Image  You are my hero.  Thank you so much.  I remember how hard I laughed when I first heard it.  After I got over the shock of the 'fat, slovenly' thing.  I can hear his voice perfectly even though I haven't played in a long time.

Star Trek tends to take stuff too far.  Klingons started out as simple adversaries, and became SPACE VIKINGS.

For some reason I pictured you throwing your hands up and waggling your fingers on the SPACE VIKING part. My brain is tired though. xD

  Great point and very true.  Poor Klingons.  I am hoping the Qunari don't meet a similar fate, but I'm afraid they are.

I hated Sten when I first met him. It was lines like this that made him one of my favorite characters.

@Eighmylupin

Same for me. I didn't bother with him for two or three playthroughs and just decided to do something different party wise. So glad I did. Earning his respect is one of the best moments in game for me. I really felt like I'd accomplished something amazing. Lol. Sten is too cool for words.

Nice Tash, the formating is killing me but that's not your fault. Also can you clear up what this is saying "She moved to one pool of sal****er; deep enough to fully submerge herself in, and circled with ledges that she could sit on. It would do." Unnecessary censoring I assume on BSN's behalf lol

Fixed!

And thank you all for the lovely comments! Posted Image

Lmfao, Varric trolls. Right. Can't post anywhere on the forums 'cept beneath our little bridge. Pack up, folks; we've been banished.

I'm snarking with backhanded comments because of all the stupid questions and self-indulgence drowning out the genuinely interesting questions and well-thought out speculation. I don't care about Varric. Plain enough?

Oh gosh, aahahahahah.

Sorry but all that snark back there. Oh my god it's so good. Brilliant! *applauds*

Same here. I didn't like his attitude but as I got to know him(and the qunari) better I came to respect him.

sal****er sal****er

sal****

OH IT'S THAT.

Lol. I don't get why that's censored. In Australia people use it rarely but it isn't considered swearing...

Is it in America/Canada? I remember seeing it in Easy A and that chick got sent to the office because she used it. Like wtf was that?

Delurking here for just a moment.

I just feel the need to say that, despite the apparent tension between the two threads, I appreciate it when the people that typically hang out in the Varric Thread meander over to this one. While the fangirl-ing and prompts are all well and fine, this thread seems to be bogged down by it at times. All good things in moderation, right?

I find it interesting to read what other people who aren't fangirl/boy-ing over Fenris have to say about the character and what they think/expect of him.

Kay, back to lurking.

Also forgot to say it's a swear word(at least in the States) because it's slang for a girl's no no zone. But yes yes...back on the topic of Fenris before we derail again...

Posted Image  Delurk more often.  As should I, I suppose.  I think Varric is going to be awesome and have no problem with his thread.  I read through the whole thing the other night and laughed more than I have in a long time.  At Dave, especially.  There shouldn't be any bickering.  Tis just a game and some awesomely made characters we know diddly squat about.    Let our misery unite us!

Cross-posting from here.

There are moments when you come into
the bar and you’ll find one companion chatting with another. You start
talking to them, and then they’re talking about something the two of
them have done. Then they’re like, “Oh hey Hawke, how are you doing,”
and one of them gets up and leaves and you continue on. It creates this
dynamic between the companions that says these are people. They have
friendships within their own group. They’ve gotten to know people
through you.

So, begin the discussion on who Fenris is going to be BFF with. After the um, tension in this topic, I'd quite like it to be Varric.

Watching some videos of the other companions in action is making me really anxious to see Fenris finally showin us what he's got.

I get the sense that he will be more graceful and agile, than just pure strength and brute that is usually associated with warriors.

Grah...even an elf not in a rouge class can still only come across as...fluid to me. I gotta stop watching so many movies.
