I must admit, it's a bit of concern.
Not the "don't die on me" bit, just the idea that you guys may be
building this character up into something he isn't or can't possibly
be-- and then ending up disappointed not because he isn't great but
because he isn't what you assumed. I realize you can't help it, and
certainly appreciate the excitement, but if I were you I'd be careful
how much you invest in your assumptions.
I appreciate the cautionary word, and it's very kind of you to think of us, but I think many of us had an experience in DAO and/or the ME series that prepared us for how things can turn out. In the end, I'm quite sure that there will be something I love about Fenris, if not the things I'm hoping to love. I've come to expect that from your writing, as I have consistently loved your characters for a long time. Even the ones I liked less than others, I still found interesting.
The speculation is fun, and I indulge myself, but I don't take it as seriously as it might seem--I'm prepared to be quite surprised about a number of things and even to be forced to love the character from afar, watch him die, or be proven completely wrong about most of what I expected. What you've little told us about the character, I've liked very much.
Still, it never hurts to give a reminder, lest there be broken hearts.

Me, too. If Fenris were like that, I'd be shocked, but would be fine with it as well.

So quick question fenaddicts what exactly is it about Fenris that you find attractive? Like physically his angst ridden past put to the side for a second. Is it the caramel toned skin? the snowy white hair? the lyrium scars? Inquiring minds wanna know...
I like all of those things. He just looks--immediately unusual. The white hair instead of yellow hair makes a big difference for me; I don't think "surfer" like I did with Zev. Normally I hate light hair with black eyebrows, but instead of thinking "hair dye" I think "those white veins... what was done to him sucked all the color out of his hair. Cool." It's an immediate visual punch, that. Odd, striking, but you can guess at the reasons right away.
Both the concept art and the in-game 'translation' of it speak of a character with a little bit of mystery to him. Somebody who doesn't immediately make it obvious what he thinks or feels, and whose subtlety tends to make those times when he is unsubtle all the more impactful. I cherish that, possibly because it's a challenge, and it's an area I have a knack for. I am drawn to people who have trouble expressing who they are or what they feel precisely because it's something I'm good at.
So I can't completely separate the art from what I think about the character. But it's as you say--Fenris isn't
traditionally handsome
This to me does not look like the face of an untried pretty boy. He's handsome, but he looks like he's lived and had to fight off despair for a long time.
You know, Mehrabian's rule is interesting here--the 7-38-55 rule. He felt that 7% of communication is what you say, 38% is your tone of voice, and 55% is
body language. Some have taken it further and said that body language is actually 65% or more of communication; we all make unconscious judgments of people based on it. For instance, you see a girl hunched over in her chair, eyes down, arms around herself... you're immediately going to realize she's either sad or nervous; her facial expression and eyes will tell you which.
So, just the way he's standing in that photo, his facial expression--I wonder how much of that drew fan attention. That very slight ironic smile on his face, mixed with determination... that intrigues me no end.
That said, the idea of a young Fenris does intrigue me. And I needed a rest after all that studying for the neuroscience exam that I did. So, here goes. Young Fenris comes out of the fog of fictional history:
I think he looks nice that way, too, but I like the weathered version MUCH better; he has more character that way. Less pretty, more interesting. This is coming from a girl who usually prefers slightly younger guys who are sorta pretty, so that's saying something. I just really like his design.
Though, looking at the younger version, it does make me wonder if the lyrium affected... er, never mind. Let's not go to that naughty place again. :innocent:

He's saying "It can't be!" I have watched his lips move and move and move... and who ever said that first, you were right...
but the question is.. "It can't be" To what?
Are you sure it's not "it has to be"?

I keep seeing this little trip of the lip in between--Although, now I can also see "She has me..." HEY! It might be a loyalty thought! Something like:
Aveline: Hawke needs you, Fenris.
Fenris: *table slam
™*
She(/he) has me!Man, we should've asked Ser Gaider about this.

The Fenris thread hates me enough. I would not incur further wrath.
I don't hate you. Far from it. I admire your intelligence, your outspokenness, and even your appreciation of chest hair.
But if I came into the Varric thread and posted art of him snuggling Bethany's bosom and squealed over their chemistry, then expressed joy at the thought of him romancing Isabela after making it clear that I didn't want to see him as an LI for Hawke... sure, I'd only be expressing my opinion, and I'd be entirely on-topic, but--I wouldn't expect to be loved for it. Actually, I just simply wouldn't do it. That strikes me as--not entirely sensitive, since I know what many of the people in that thread are hoping.
Regardless of how you meant it, it sort of gives the impression you would cheer if we got our fangirl hearts broken, which I think caused any tension you may've sensed.
Tomorrow, the devs could announce something like, "Sorry, but Varric and Anders are the LIs this time around. Fenris will be romancing Bethany or no one at all." Doubtful, but if they did, there would be a lot of sad girls in this thread. And it would be all the more bitter, feeling like people were laughing at us for hoping.
I don't know--I always kinda felt like that Varric and Fenris are both the underdogs. Varric is a dwarf, which for some incomprehensible reason certain people think means he can't be appealing to anyone, while Fenris is--according to some people--too fruity, too pretty, too "Zevran", not manly enough, or whatever. I think both lines of thought are marveously stupid. So I've always kind of felt like we should be actively supportive of each other. Maybe I'm alone in that, I don't know, but I do feel we're in the same boat and if somebody gets disappointed, I'm going to feel bad for them no matter who it is.
