I know the answer probably is "no", but has anyone here thought about playing the opposite gender to see how the relationship (sexual or not) plays out from the other side?
Huh? What do you mean?

Okay, not a prompt, but I had this little story floating in my head today. I thought I'd share
snipped for length.
I quite liked that story, I can see Fenris being a bit afraid to let others see behind his "stoic, living weapon" exterior

Most people have a "default" gender when they play (for example, Im a guy, so 99.9% of the time time, I play a guy in games...except when Im going for a damn achievement

Yes. I actually always play as both males and females in any game that gives the choice. Its always intresting to see how different sides play out. When I first played SWKOTOR I played as a girl and hated Bastila, then in my second playthrough I played as a guy and loved her. I think if you just play as one gender you miss half the story. Actually I'm a chick but I play as guy more often then a girl.

On the subject of Fenris and M!Hawke, he strikes me as being a good friend for Hawke. He's calm, calculating, and collected and acts as the voice of reason when Hawke has his head a bit too high in the clouds.
Carver/Bethany is the person who keeps Hawke's ego in check, Aveline helps Hawke to be mindful of his duty, Isabela and Varric remind him to enjoy life. Fenris is there to help keep Hawke firmly rooted in reality.

I do this a lot, actually. I play mostly females but try to get in one male playthrough to see how it differs. I managed a successful bromance with Alistair, for example, which was really fun.
Also: Hi, everyone. I've been lurking for a while and finally posted.

I always do an opposite gender play-through, although it tends to languish before being finished. Usually I am just so excited that I can play as a female that I tend to overdose on it.

Oh, yes. I've already decided my second playthrough will be a male mage, after female rogue. If there is any added dynamic between Fenris and mage Hawkes, I'll be seeing it alongside a bromance.

I tend to play as female when the option is available, as I am female myself. However, I'm always curious to see any differences there may be, so I do play through as a male character at least once (in the case of Origins, I wanted to see what romancing Morrigan was like--truthfully, I found my relationship with her more satisfying as a female, same with my romance with Leliana), and I wanted to compare experiences when it came to romancing Zevran. Talking to Sten was also a bit different as a male, so it all made for a fresh playthrough. I'll probably do the same with 2 after I've played out all I can think of as fem!Hawke.
Also, lurkers seem to be creeping out of the woodwork, so... hi! I've been watching this thread since... uh... about 200 pages ago.

I am female and I always play female first, however I do like to get my money's worth out of a game. I'll probablly play Female on friendship/possibleromance path with Fenris, and then Male with rivalry. I potentially could play through as female with rivalry romance as well if that option exists. I like to try and meet all the companions in as many ways as possible (both genders and "personalities")

For Morrigan, the hook was the Dark Ritual. I knew that moment would exist almost before the rest of the game did. Alistair didn't start off having a hook, and I realized it after I began writing him. He was a distrustful, surly sort and I hated it. So... what to do? I wanted to make his dialogue fun, the sort of person who guys wouldn't hate because he was a buddy. Since I was watching BtVS at the time, it came to me when I was (predictably) analyzing Joss Whedon's method of delivering dialogue. Anachronistic, sure, but could it be done in fantasy...? I wanted to try.
There was a hook for Fenris, but I can't tell you what it is yet. It's a spoiler. The tattoos came later (and, amusingly, before I even saw Jack), but there was an element to Fenris that made me want to write him. His #1 is also significant, which is important as I mandated that every DA2 character would need a #1. It's a more personal story, after all, without a "YOU MUST SAVE THE WORLD NO YOU MUST" thing going on-- and thus the ciphers are that much more important.
Just wanted to say your hook for Alistair totally worked and came through in the game. He was my bro. I felt like him and my Warden were good friends by the end of the game, which was fun.
Do you get a lot of say in the art design of the character you're writing?

If DA:O is anything to go by, I'm a bit of an oddball, where the romances are concerned. I always seem to pick the S/S romances, regardless as to what gender I'm playing, since they're the options that seem to best suit the characters I play, and to be honest, I can eaaaasily see the same thing happening in DA:2.
For example, for my Fem!Hawke I'm really looking forward to a possible romance with Isabela, provided she's the S/S romance option. I'm not so sure about my M!Hawke, as--to be quite honest--I haven't given his play-through as much thought as Fem!Hawke's (in DA:O, my first and main play-through was as a male city elf, so I decided to change things up and have a serious female play-through in DA:2.)
I'm still not sure if Fenris is a romance option (it seems likely, but I prefer to remain on the safe side of cautious) but I think I would be interested, if he were an S/S option. I don't really like the excuse of, "we can't have two bi elves!" as a reason to place a straight restriction on him, since to me, it's always been more about the character than race, and what characters appeal to me as romance options, regardless of race.
It's also strange how Isabela doesn't seem to get as much flack as Fenris, so far as S/S romances are concerned. xD I mean, I don't think anyone has brought up Leliana in DA:O, and claimed that we can't have another S/S human bi option, because it would forever label the human women of Thedas. XD Then again, that could just be my ignorance showing.
In short: Yes, I probably would explore it, provided it's available.

Fenris still wondered how he ended up so lucky.
He didn't understand why someone like Faline would want to be with him. Sure, he was strong, a good warrior, but it wasn't as if he had much else going for him. And yet she told him she loved him, every day in fact, as if afraid he'd forget it. It scared him how close he'd let her get. He was scared that it was all a joke, that she didn't really care about him at all.
They were watching the sky and the clouds. It was a while before lunch time.
Watching the sky was a habit he'd picked up after joining her party. When he was a slave, he never got to see the sky. But as a free man...it was a reminder that this wasn't a dream, that he wasn't going to wake up one day back in that cage. She began joining him in his watchings after they'd known each other for a year. He was put off at first, but gradually got used to her company. If she wasn't there with him, he'd think something was wrong.
Faline was curled up next him, her silvery gray eyes shut gently, mouth slack. Her arm was slung over him, her leg bent over his own legs. He had forgone watching the twisting, swirling clouds in favor of watching her doze, smiling as her nose twitched in a very feline manner. She opened her round eyes and looked up at him tiredly.
"What's wrong?" she murmured.
"I was just thinking..." Fenris sighed. "Why are you here?"
"Uhm...because I always watch the clouds with you." Faline frowned.
"I mean...why are you with me?"
"Because I love you, you silly elf." She grinned. He didn't return it.
"Then...why do you love me?" She sighed at him.
"I...don't really know. I just do." he raised an eyebrow at her. "It's ineffable!"
"I'm what?"
"No no no, ineffable means it can't be explained!" she laughed.
"Oh."
"But why are you even asking this? Do you doubt my affections?"
"It's just...something Varric said." Fenris sighed again.
"What did the dwarf tell you that upset you so, my love?" Faline inquired.
"He just...asked me why you were with me when he was the manly one."
"Wait, what?" Faline arched an eyebrow. "How the Black City is he more manly?"
"Chest hair."
"WHAT?"
"He said he's more manly then me because he has chest hair." Faline couldn't help herself; she began laughing uncontrollably.
"Oh...oh, Fen," she coughed out between laughs. "You've gotta be kidding me! CHESTHAIR?" Fenris frowned, and began to feel rather silly. "Fen, I hate chest hair! And I love you for more then your lack thereof." Faline placed a kiss on his cheek.
"I'm so sorry for having a curiosity, my love." he sniffed sarcastically.
"Curiosity killed the cat, y'know."
"I thought you were the cat."
She bit her bottom lip, holding back her laughter. "Damn you logic, elfling!"
