What are people talking about when they say 'Hook'? Like a twist? A secret they have?
If you're referring to the 'friendship/rivalry hook' that I mentioned...
All companions have a friendship and rivalry path and it's based on a specific concept/philosophy/desire they have. For example, if DA 2 had Leliana, we could say that her friendship/rivalry path would be the chantry.
If you're supportive of the chantry and the Maker, you'd gain friendship points. If you're dismissive or critical, you'd get rivalry points.
Or, let's imagine that Aveline's friendship/rivalry hook was something like, 'The guards of Kirkwall should be free of external influence.' If you undertake actions that help to make them independent (rooting out corruption, giving them financial independence, letting them arrest Templars) that might give you friendship points while actions like convincing them to side with the mages or letting Templars become officers might get you rivalry points.
As I understand it, these 'hooks' are a bit more specific and personal than the DA:O system of where you could interact with Sten and not understand that to gain influence you needed to backhand him and tell him to STFU or GTFO. Or Alistiar where you just did generally good actions.
