I could dig that, very much so. If he is as you describe, bsbcaer, then friendship could be about getting him to slowly release that tension and relax,
while rivalry could be about inflating the bubble of control until it pops.
Random, but this gave me an amusing mental image. xD
But once again, I am looking forward to seeing BioWare's take on 'stoic' behavior.
You have a naughty mind.

Maybe he's like the one who's always physically in the group conversation, but only says like two words.
Yeah, he only says something when he has something solid to say or when someone addresses him personally... that's what I'm thinking.

I see Fenris being initally very wary
of Hawke and the rest of the party at first. He's been on the run from
the Magister for awhile and living like that can put anyone on edge. As
time passes Fenris might mellow out a little after having a stable home
and life in Kirkwall.
On the subject of Merrill, we're not even
sure if she is an LI or not but I'm not sure that I could romance her. I
have nothing against Merrill, but she just seems too young for Hawke, I
had the same problem with Tali. Romances like that just make me feel a
little creepy.
Maybe she just is virginal in comparison to Isabela; doesn't have to mean she's young or an actual virgin or has a cute, squeaky, little girl voice. Maybe the voice that comes out of that little frame is the voice of an adult woman. And I thought Hawke started at 20. If she is, too, then she isn't necessarily childlike or younger in any way.
With Sten, Cauthrien, Loghain, and Varric under her belt, Ms. Kirby seems to like strong characters with depth to them, so even if Merrill is cute that doesn't mean she'll seem childish once we actually hear her and see her in action. I'm still holding off on that one.

Therefore I'd rather Fenris not be Sten like or at least not stare at me angrily every time I made a joke.
I
think it'd be nice if Fenris initially is perturbed by Hawke making
jokes, but as the years go by in the game he gets used to them and even
comes to appreciate Hawke's humor.
I would love that! At first it's like,

or even <_<, but over time the corner of his mouth would begin to creep up

, and then eventually when Hawke says something silly he just shakes his head and fights a full-on grin.

Sten
definately comes to mind. I can't help it. I adore Sten XD and in some
ways, I think
Leliana was exactly right when she dubbed him a big
softy. There's no doubt in my mind that Fenris is going to be his
own character, though. Somehow, I can't imagine him having the same
fondness for cake and cookies. =(
I go back every now and then
and drag Sten everywhere with me. Having him question my every move
grumpily while we are so high on the like-meter is just so amusing. Like
bringing around your very own kick-ass grumpy grandpa to your battles,
who just so happens to have a killer body and large sword. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]
I loved Sten for these very reasons.

Well yeah, I don't want him to be a
broken shell that Hawke has to nurse back to mental stability or
anything. I just don't want it to be something that isn't explored or
doesn't affect him. It also depends how long it's been since he was
enslaved or whatever. There are just too many variables but it shouldn't
just be like, two lines of a background story and not have any effect
on him whatsoever in the present, IMO.
From this, I'm hearing "I want a happy medium between basket case and unrealistically perfect character." I think that all of us can agree with that.

As
it stands, Aveline is more likely a male LI than Varric is a female
one. Why? Because people can't look past their prejudices and romance a
dwarf. There quite literally is
no other reason. I've often said
that if Varric was an elf or a human, people would be hoping and wishing
and jumping up and down for an opportunity to romance him. As it
stands, that hasn't happened. 'Cause he's a dwarf.
Y
I still think he's entirely possible--it's
just, I don't recall Mary Kirby writing a romance before in this series.
This time she wrote Varric and Merrill, according to the wiki,
though... maybe Merrill has no romance, contrary to how it seemed, but
it's just as possible that either or both are available. We'll just have
to see.
I get what you're saying on the "people
don't want to romance a dwarf" analysis, but I don't get the impression
that the writers care if players have hang-ups about specific
characters. Their replies are often: "So? Don't romance him/her then."
The real question is whether or not Mary Kirby was up to the challenge
of making a LI out of
Aveline Merrill or Varric. I don't think a dwarf romance is a matter of if, but when. If not this game, perhaps DA3.
Didn't sound like we'd see a romance from TGP on this one, but the rest of the writing team is a possibility. It's just a question of whether they thought they could make the character appealing. I do believe that with every romance, they try to make that character visually appealing to someone if they're going to be romanceable. So I still see it as entirely possible that Varric is an LI, because he IS what you'd call a "sexy dwarf." He appeals even to people who normally wouldn't go for dwarves, and for that reason I think it's possible. Some people thought that Thane was too froggish/lizardy to be a romance--they were wrong. For that reason, I'm not going to be convinced Varric isn't romanceable until a dev says flat-out, "Varric isn't romanceable."
