Thank you, Doctor, for that wonderful dialogue. If Merrill is truly the playful virginal girl next door, so to speak, then it will be very interesting to see her interactions with other characters!

As for Fenris, I am sorry to say, for all of you Fenris fans out there, that Fenris and Merrill look really cute together. At least they look like the part, if we can't determine if they can act the part.

My only fear about Fenris is that he might end up being that whiney, emo sort of person who fails to reconcile with his brutal past as a Tevinter slave. Kind of like Jack in ME2.

A lot of people compare him to Jack lately...
I have never played ME2, what's Jack's story exactly?

Jack was kidnapped as a young child and turned into a biotic weapon by Cerberus. Later, she is betrayed by a bunch of people she thought were her friends, forcing her to kill them all. She hides her very delicate interior with an exterior that suggests "****" and "hardass".

Jack was experimented on since she was a child by Cerberus cause they wanted to create this powerful biotic.
She escaped the facility but as you can guess all those years of torture messed her up pretty badly and according to her she joined cults, gangs and was even a pirate.  She is very distrustful and of course is fillled with lots of anger but one thing I can say about her she was very well written and when she does open up to Shepherd its very touching so to me if Fenris is compared to Jack its not a bad thing cause she was an amazing character..

In regards with Fenris there are some similarities cause they were both experimented on so they could become powerful "weapons" but since its completely a different writing team I think the comparisons should stop there and when it comes to personality noone can truly say until the game is released, which I can't wait for..Posted Image

Edit: XX beat me to it oh darn..Posted Image

Okay, thanks. =3

I can see why people would think they are comparable (considering we know next to nothing about Fenris). Now I understand even more why David was reluctant to tell us where he got his inspiration for Fenris' character. As soon as people find one thing that is (or looks) the same they turn it into 'copy of'.

For the record, I'm not saying you are doing that, because even from the little info you gave about Jack I can see it too. But it is very easy to think that way and I think that at this point we are looking for things to compare him to, because it is one of our favourite things to speculate about. x3

I don't see Fenris being like Jack. I foresee Fenris being more introverted about his problem compared to how extroverted Jack was. Jack hated everyone, treated people like crap, and generally came across as if she were God's gift to biotics. In fact the only way she actually shows anything other than hardass is if you romance her, and being female, I couldn't do that. So she was just this cranky troll in the cellar, yelling about Cerebus and cursing at anything that came within five feet of her.

Seeing how Gaider already said that Fenris doesn't even shout in combat, I highly doubt he'll be like Jack. He might be slightly irritated by company and I can't see him cracking a lot of jokes about his experience, but I can't see him cursing everyone else out and reminding everyone of how awful the magister was every five seconds. I see him being reluctant to talk about any of it unlike Jack who screamed about her abuse from the rooftops just hid it by being a badass as if it didn't bother her.

Here, Fen thread. I was messing around with EVE online's character creator and I made this. Not a perfect likeness but I think it came out pretty nice anyway. What's sort of funny is I think this guy came out looking like Desmond Harrington, who I thought Fen resembled. It was unintentional, I was just trying for a Fen-ish vibe.

Thank you for pointing that out. But, the parallel does remain, however. So, while Jack and Fenris may be mirrors of one another in one way, they do appear to share similar experiences. Naturally, they might express the effects of their abuse differently, since they are not perfect copies of one another.

Both Jack and Fenris are scarred by their experiences. That much we can establish.

About Jack.

Didn't the Grand Poobah said it sometimes back that he didn't know about Jack until Fenris character setting is finish? Yes, I think they are similarities, but not that close.

Heh, I liked Jack but other than the similarity in backgrounds the writers seem to be going different places with it.  Jack was very much a loose cannon.  She even tells you she's been thinking about taking the Normandy for a joyride.  Fenris seems rather the opposite, judging by the fact that he meditates in battle and is described as stoic.  More like a guided laser.  And didn't DG say that he wasn't a woobie character?  Jack pretty much is.

Yes, that is true, there is that similarity, but I think the interesting thing is how they handle it. I mean the character with the horrible background is a staple, but what makes them all different is how they act and how they deal with the past. Do they make a joke of everything instead of facing it like Zevran? Do they hide from it by putting on a badass front and not trusting anyone like Jack? Do they let it define them by sitting around and sulking in a corner, pushing everyone away aka emo (my personal least favorite)?

What I like is if you kind of notice a difference about the person but it doesn't define them. You don't feel like you have to apologize to that person for all their problems. Instead they just let it all out up front and then kind of let it go. Eventually I think as that person gets close to you, that's when they'll delve into more personal feelings, or specifics about what happened. But like in Fenris case, they aren't just lyrium slave and that's it, because if that's all he was than the magister has already won.

Anyway that's my hope of how he turns out. I think we've all had bad experiences in life, what makes a person annoying or emoish, if that's even a word, is if they take those experiences and make everyone around them feel miserable with them, letting the experience own you instead of conquering it.

Jack's personality does connect with a lot of people, just not with me. Even so, I prefer her personality over the 'nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I'm gonna eat some worms' personality. Jack's powers seem partially rooted in her anger, so in a way it makes her more powerful. I liked that she didn't let other people push her around and she had an interesting personality, but I didn't like how she hid everything inside. Her ranting about Cerebus and people in general seemed like a bit of denial for me rather than actually facing what she had been through. Instead those deep feelings just transmitted to more anger and its only awhile before a person just explodes.

Probably had a better conclusion if you romanced her, but for everyone else, she just seems like a bottled up stick of dynamite.

Sorry to interrupt, but I watched way too much Firefly today:

(Merrill and Fenris are stranded in a small village outside of Kirkwall. The local population, convinced by the local Templars that the young Keeper represents a threat to the village, after a fight Merrill is about to be burned at the stake as a witch)

Fenris:(draws sword)  I will not let you kill an innocent person out of fear.

Village Elder: That will not stop us elf. (draws sword and starts to move towards Fenris the elder is about to strike when suddenly an arrow flies out of nowhere and lands at the elder's feet, it is followed by another shot. Fenris raises his head to reveal Sebastian perched on a nearby rooftop.)

Hawke: (walking into the village square with Isabela) Well, would you look at this? I guess that we just got here in the nick of time, what do you suppose that makes us?

Isabela: Big sodding heroes I'd say.

Hawke: Aren't we just. I have to say Fenris, you truly have a way of dealing with people.

Fenris: What can I say? Its a gift.

Village Elder: This is a holy cleansing, you dare not interfere in the Maker's will.

Hawke: (gesturing towards Sebastian) Do you see the angry looking man on the roof over there with the huge bow? He didn't really want to come back, man's looking to kill some folk. So right now I think its his will that you should all be worrying about. Now cut her down.

Village Elder:
She's a witch, she is an affront to the Maker.

Hawke: Yes, but she's our witch. Cut her down. Unless you want to deal with him of course (Sebastian draws his bow to fire)

*sniffle* I miss Firefly so much...

On that note, now I really hope there's an intricate fight/cutscene sorta similar to what you wrote, Doctor. I mean one where Hawke is out in the open conversing with the baddies (sarcastically, arrogantly, heroically, whatever you choose in the dialogue wheel) while another companion is hidden until making a surprise attack. Furthermore, I'd love it if Hawke could banter with companions right before a fight like that. :D

On the subject of Firefly and Dialogue:

(A carriage bearing the House Tethras crest is ambushed by raiders on the highway leading out of Kirkwall)

Raider Captain: Well, well what have we here? (Draws sword) Alright you are going to give me all of your money, your cargo, and you're going to perhaps give me a little private time with the lady here.

Varric: (in disguise) Oh I don't think you want that. You see I went and got myself mixed up with a powerful ugly creature.

Fenris:
(In a dress and fancy hat) How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of complete strangers like that? You are not the man I met in Nevarra all of those years ago! (notices that the raider captain is distracted and draws sword while Varric shoulders Bianca)

Varric: See now, here's the thing. My folks are getting a tad bit annoyed that you people are raiding our caravans. They'd like to see the end of you. Now being the kind-hearted man that I am I'm going to offer you two choices, go and take an extended stay in a nice jail cell, or my friend in the pretty silken petticoat here can finish the job right here. Which do you prefer?

Raider Captain: I chose neither. (lunges to attack only to be caught mid lunge by Aveline who vaults out of the carriage's side door while Hawke ambushes the raiders on their flank after a quick fight the skirmish is over.)

Fenris:
Can anyone tell me why Aveline couldn't have been the person who wore the dress?

Hawke: She's our tactics woman, besides have you ever tried to have a swordfight whilst wearing a dress? Its rather awkward. Besides, you look rather fetching in blue.

Varric:
Enough with the flirting you two, we need to go tell that bean-counter brother of mine that his little raider problem is taken care of. I have an ale waiting for me at the tavern in Hightown and I want to get there before it gets warm.

Aveline: Do you think of nothing else besides drinking and lazing about?

Varric: Of course I do, how did you think I came up with this brilliant plan?

I am very worried about this character, he seems to have been put in to appease a certain demographic instead of for meaningful plot advancement, I'm probably wrong though, but the name 'Fenris' seems to imply that I'm right.
That said I hope that you guys avoid the comedic route of having him reply in a dead pan tone and reacting to situations in ridiculous ways, and that you accurately try to convey the kind of frustration that would lead someone off the deep end because of problems expressing oneself. :alien:
