On the subject of Lyrium branding, I'm more interested in the CHANTRY'S potential interest in Fenris than the Tevinter Magister's.

For all we know, the Magister is still in Tevinter and could care less about tracking down one of his experiments. The Chantry, however, is well established in Kirkwall, and has a known dependency on Lyrium.

Could you imagine the possible effects of Lyrium-branded Templars in the war against apostates/malificarum/Tevinter?

Not to mention, the Chantry has a history of leading several exalted marches against Tevinter in the past--all ending in failure. Now Fenris--the latest Tevinter 'weapon', waltzes into Kirkwall, and right into their potential clutches. If they captured him, they could study his brands in a misguided attempt to turn the 'enemy's' weapon against them.

Now that's an interesting thought. That could be interesting, if done well. The main question would be: how does the Chantry know/find out about Fenris' lyrium branding? Since I doubt Fenris would go around telling everybody on the street.

@ tankgirly: I've been having boundless "fun" with my laptops. Long story short, my old laptop got reformatted and internet security was wiped, so I couldn't come on the net, and I had to wait until yesterday to get my new laptop put on the university's network instead of my old one.

So, with all the fun I've had over the weekend, I haven't had the chance to write a story prompt. But, now that all is sorted, I can finally get to it. On that note, can I write for more than one prompt? 'Cause I have a couple of stories in mind.

I'd better get started, and let fanfiction drown out the sorrow of realising that my old laptop, which I planed to use for games, does not have the recommended specs for playing DA:O, which is why I have suffered lag since I bought it. This unfortunately means that I'll get lag in DA2.Posted Image

You know, I think I'll pull a Zevran and cry. Posted Image Is there someone's bosom I may lay my head on?Posted Image

Not to mention what most NPCs would say...I mean, you can't just walk around with a shiny, shiny, shiny...shiny...shiny...

...shiny...sh-

-ahem-
Shiny elf and not expect people to act as if everything's normal.

Or could you?:bandit:

@incol1900:

Good question! And honestly, I don't have a definite answer, but my assumption would be that Lyrium has a 'presence' that can be easily felt/identified by those who work closely with it.

Some examples being a mage, templar, or quite possibly even a dwarf who works in the lyrium trade. Mages, I imagine, would be the most in-tuned to it.

Once again, this is just an assumption on my part. I doubt any old bloke off the street would be able to differentiate them from Dalish tattoos.

EDIT:

Also, yes, there is also the fact that he is a shiny elf. Or so we assume, anyway. xD

It's a thought, but it kind of retreads old ground.
The team already wrote about this problem with the golems and the moral dillemas would be similar in this scenario, except instead of you making the ultimate decision you would have to be liked by fenris and you'd have to convince him instead.

Edit: I...I never implied that he was a werewolf it never crossed my mind because it seemed sort of ridiculous to have a lyrium infused werewolf.

when you look at it that way, everything has been done before.

Regardless, comparing Lyrium branding to golems seems pointless.  They're both very different.

For example, there's the motivation.  The dwarven people (originally) were not forced into giving up their 'fleshy' bodies and freedom to a diabolical overlord who wished to use them against a chosen enemy.  I say chosen because the Tevinter Imperium and Chantry of Andraste choose to fight each other due to a conflict of beliefs.  They're not a forced enemy, like the Darkspawn, who seek to blight everything and (pre-Awakening knowledge) can't be reasoned with.

The dwarven people chose to become golems willingly to prolong the survival of their race against the Darkspawn.  They were volunteers.  It wasn't until later--due to pressure laid down by the Darkspawn--that the castless were forcibly made into golems, and that's why the practice was stopped.

Fenris (as far as we know) didn't volunteer.  He was a slave, and from what we know of Tevinter and their treatment of the elven people, it's very likely the brands were forced upon him.  That makes this scenario different from Shale's.

Whereas Shale volunteered, and for most of the game, preferred her more indestructible body, the change in Fenris is forced.

If you were however comparing this situation to the 'a Paragon of her kind' quest, there are still valid differences.

The first being, Branka didn't want Shale, she wanted the Anvil of the Void.  She didn't want you to hand over a (potential) ally to poke and prod and recreate, she wanted the tool that forged her.

Assuming the Chantry even gain an interest in Fenris, the situation is very different if you have invested interest in the character.  It's not a situation of 'give up anvil, risk having friend/teammate mad at you and result in oops death'.

It's 'give away another living being, who you've potentially grown close to as a friend/ally, because someone else is telling you it's for the greater good.'

Anyway, the only reason I brought this up is because David Gaider said each character will have their 'hook', a real reason for them to be by Hawke's side that doesn't equate to, 'there is a Blight, and we all need to do our part to not die.'

We can speculate that a Chantry vs mage war is brewing based off what we've seen so far.  That being said, I was merely suggesting that Fen's 'hook' may just be embedded in his skin.  Then again, I believe it's also been said that the Lyrium tattoos weren't added until much later, so maybe the brands will have no relevance at all.

Also, I don't think the comment about Fenris = werewolf was directed at you.  I think they were just mentioning that the name has been picked apart for hidden details back and forth (by other people) and that the general consensus was that David just liked the name. xD

On the subject of Firefly and Dialogue:

(A carriage bearing the House Tethras crest is ambushed by raiders on the highway leading out of Kirkwall)

Raider Captain: Well, well what have we here? (Draws sword) Alright you are going to give me all of your money, your cargo, and you're going to perhaps give me a little private time with the lady here.

Varric: (in disguise) Oh I don't think you want that. You see I went and got myself mixed up with a powerful ugly creature.

Fenris:
(In a dress and fancy hat) How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of complete strangers like that? You are not the man I met in Nevarra all of those years ago! (notices that the raider captain is distracted and draws sword while Varric shoulders Bianca)

Varric: See now, here's the thing. My folks are getting a tad bit annoyed that you people are raiding our caravans. They'd like to see the end of you. Now being the kind-hearted man that I am I'm going to offer you two choices, go and take an extended stay in a nice jail cell, or my friend in the pretty silken petticoat here can finish the job right here. Which do you prefer?

Raider Captain: I chose neither. (lunges to attack only to be caught mid lunge by Aveline who vaults out of the carriage's side door while Hawke ambushes the raiders on their flank after a quick fight the skirmish is over.)

Fenris:
Can anyone tell me why Aveline couldn't have been the person who wore the dress?

Hawke: She's our tactics woman, besides have you ever tried to have a swordfight whilst wearing a dress? Its rather awkward. Besides, you look rather fetching in blue.

Varric:
Enough with the flirting you two, we need to go tell that bean-counter brother of mine that his little raider problem is taken care of. I have an ale waiting for me at the tavern in Hightown and I want to get there before it gets warm.

Aveline: Do you think of nothing else besides drinking and lazing about?

Varric: Of course I do, how did you think I came up with this brilliant plan?

I wake up to two dialogues that's taken from Firefly?! Best way to start the day. <3<3

What the Circle would perhaps like to do with Fenris:

First Enchanter: Hey, you're full of lyrium and you're not dead or insane! Well, that's pretty neat, perhaps we could study you in the name of science!

What the Templars/Chantry would probably do with Fenris:

Grand Commander:
Hey that elf is full of lyrium and is not dead or insane. Let's have our prisoners Mages figure out how we could do that to our people so that we can have an army of super soldiers!

Divine:
(Whining) But I wanted to burn the elf. The magics used in whatever blood magic ritual enacted upon him are an affront to the Maker!

Grand Commander:
(Patting the Divine on the back) Worry not my friend! You can go ahead and burn whatever is left after we're done!

What we would want Hawke to do with Fenris:

Hawke: Hey you're full of lyrium and you're not dead or insane! Plus you're also pretty cute. You're coming with me!

I'm going with Hawke on that. Although that will probably be something my imagined Rogue!Hawkette will spit out, or the equivalence, if it's a option. My Mage!Hawkette will be too innocent diplomatic to do much but blush and stutter ask if he'd join her party in a really sweet voice.

Okay, prompt story for snow. Fenris has, for whatever reason, been away from Kirkwall for a few years, and he comes back during one snowy afternoon.

The snow crunched lightly underfoot as Fenris walked down the street, the cold biting into his feet. He had forgotten to acquire a cloak, and he shivered slightly in the frigid air.

It had been a long time since he been in Kirkwall, too long, and he was eager to see some familiar faces. The street he was walking down would lead him past the home of Tiffany Hawke, apostate and friend, and she was the first person he wanted to see.

As he drew near, he saw figures in the street, playing in the snow and laughing unreservedly. The bright red hair brought a smile to the ex-slave’s face as he recognised the Hawke siblings. It seemed that Tiffany was chasing a small child, no older than two years of age, also with… bright… red… hair…

The resemblance was obvious, frighteningly so, and the ease in which they acted around one another could not have been smoother.

He felt his heart lurch slightly in his chest as he noticed this, thought he could not explain why. True, she had expressed an interest in him before he had left, and he had felt a connection to her unlike any other, but neither of them had acted upon their feelings. And yet, seeing her with the child made his heart ache.

As if sensing his gaze, Hawke looked in his direction and waved at him enthusiastically. In an instant, she was running up to join him, sending white powder everywhere with every step. The smile on her face was as welcoming as it had always been, and in spite of the ache, he smiled in return.

“Fenris,” she called happily. “Welcome back.”

“Thank you, Hawke,” he replied quietly. “You seem well…”

He trailed off, looking behind her as the small child, now close enough for him realise it was a girl, poorly attempted to sneak up on them. He watched as Hawke instantly spun round and picked up the little girl, twirling her high in the air to elicit screams of delight from her before positioning the girl on her hip.

Again, Fenris felt the action stab at him, but he ignored it. He was fairly sure that he maintained a stoic expression when Hawke turned back to him with the child in her arms.

“Fenris, I’d like you to meet Bethany, my niece,” she introduced, turning to smile adoringly at the girl.

He stood rooted in surprise, unsure of how he should be feeling. Moments ago he had felt terrible, thinking that she had moved on, but now he was almost lightheaded with relief. Then, the meaning behind her words finally filtered into his head.

“You mean Carver…?” he trailed off again, uncertain of how to finish the question.

Hawke laughed good-naturedly, and nodded to him. The smile on her face widened.

“I know, I’ve known about this for the past two years, and I’m still struggling with the thought of my little brother being a father,” she stated, still laughing. “Who’d have thought, him and Avaline, huh?”

“Avaline?” Fenris asked in surprise, earning another nod from Hawke. “When did they-”

“Quite literally the night after you left,” she stated, interrupting him. “They –well, Avaline– practically announced that they were together that night at the tavern. She was quite sad that you weren’t there, but… I knew you didn’t want a fanfare when you left.”

“And I appreciated it,” he assured her. “Still, it seems like a lot has been going on since I left.”

“That happens when you’re away for a couple or three years,” she noted. “I can dump this little bundle of trouble onto her father, and we could go for a drink, if you like.”

“That does sound appealing,” he admitted, smiling at her.

“Shall we, then?” she asked, holding out her hand, gesturing for him to walk by her side.

He looked at her hand for a moment and then boldly slipped his own around hers, holding her fingers gently should pull her hand back. His palm tingled slightly at the contact, pleasurable, not painful. When she smiled in delight and squeezed his hand in response, the sensation went up his arm and he fought the urge to extend his own smile.

They silently walked back to the area outside Hawke’s home, where Carver was sitting, obviously wondering what was going on. The silence was enjoyable, with only the sound of their footsteps in the snow, for which Fenris was glad. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to form a coherent sentence if he were to speak.

“Fenris?” Hawke called quietly from his side. “I’m glad you’re back.”

He flashed her a wider smile and squeezed her fingers gently in response.

“So am I.”

Give me a few minutes and I'll be back with my prompt for fear.

Sorry to interrupt, but I watched way too much Firefly today:

(Merrill and Fenris are stranded in a small village outside of Kirkwall. The local population, convinced by the local Templars that the young Keeper represents a threat to the village, after a fight Merrill is about to be burned at the stake as a witch)

Fenris:(draws sword)  I will not let you kill an innocent person out of fear.

Village Elder: That will not stop us elf. (draws sword and starts to move towards Fenris the elder is about to strike when suddenly an arrow flies out of nowhere and lands at the elder's feet, it is followed by another shot. Fenris raises his head to reveal Sebastian perched on a nearby rooftop.)

Hawke: (walking into the village square with Isabela) Well, would you look at this? I guess that we just got here in the nick of time, what do you suppose that makes us?

Isabela: Big sodding heroes I'd say.

Hawke: Aren't we just. I have to say Fenris, you truly have a way of dealing with people.

Fenris: What can I say? Its a gift.

Village Elder: This is a holy cleansing, you dare not interfere in the Maker's will.

Hawke: (gesturing towards Sebastian) Do you see the angry looking man on the roof over there with the huge bow? He didn't really want to come back, man's looking to kill some folk. So right now I think its his will that you should all be worrying about. Now cut her down.

Village Elder:
She's a witch, she is an affront to the Maker.

Hawke: Yes, but she's our witch. Cut her down. Unless you want to deal with him of course (Sebastian draws his bow to fire)

Now, as I watch this episode, all I can see are the DA2 characters.

Under Dragon Age 2 on IMDB Louis Tamone is listed as voicing someone named 'Elrin'.. Do we know who this Elrin character is or is it possible he might be Fenris? When I saw his name I was hoping he was voicing Fenris. He's even been in Fable so it could have been him!

Random question of the day: would Fenris be addicted to lyrium? The stuff has become essentially a part of his body, so do you suppose that he has to take in more lyrium to keep himself going? Or are the brands just ordiary markings?

It says he voiced the Prince in Fable 3, which was an English accent. Unless he was faking THAT, I'd assume it's not Fenris... didn't the devs say something about Fenris having a unique accent?

I could be totally off base though, so feel free to ignore me.

I was wondering about addiction, too.
