There are a world of differences besides level of confidence.

Fenris kills people in spectacularly and overtly gruesome ways, with a sword as big as him, and glows, and if the story is any indication, doesn't do much to stay out of sight despite being higly recognizable. To be, basically, a giant neon sign, for which people are actively hunting, you've got to be... very sure that you can deal with whoever or whatever notices you. And it really seems like he doesn't give a **** who notices him. Which... I would describe as arrogant. The ****** part is the breaking and entering and ogling and grand theft carbohydrates alskdjfal;wkj.

Meanwhile Zevran is a sneaky backstabby poison using rogue, who excels at quick and clean kills and whose success hinges on being unnoticed. He understands and accepts his very delicate position being somebody else's, well, tool. He doesn't mind working under a 'master' figure and carrying out other people's orders. In bed, dohohoho. He seems to enjoy it. He expresses that he wouldn't know what to do with freedom if he had it.

That's different enough for me o_O

Well, to be fair, it wasn't just the short story. It was also the video where he slaughters the mercenaries who tried to lay a trap for him, and then struts down the steps and brazenly turns his back on the remaining merc.
There's also "They know what I am. Let them come, if they find the courage."
Then you have the evidence from the short story:

Fenris paused and stared at the man in disgust. He’d thought to blend
in more once he’d escaped the Imperium. In a land where elves were
free, certainly one more elf would go unnoticed? He’d been a fool, of
course. How was he to know that so many of his people would squander
their freedom living like frightened cattle?

So they weren’t warned. Fools.

Oh, how Fenris loved it when they said that. “Not afraid you’ll lose your head for good?”

And of course the part where, despite the fact that he's running for his life, he takes time to appreciate some cleavage.

I don't think anyone is suggesting he's going to be constantly, overbearingly egotistical but he does seem to think he's untouchable and enjoys goading his enemies. Which is awesome sauce.

Also remember that there is a confirmed "jerk" amongst the companions (at least according to Chris Priestly) and it could easily be Fenris...

Actually, I'm kind of thinking that person is Anders now. He was pretty carefree and fun in Awakening and now he's ripping people's heads off and plotting vengeance against every living templar. 

Also, can I say, how bad ass is Lady Hawke? We've got two guys that are melting people's faces and punching through people's brains and she's going to date them? Totally badass

"Just"? He should be damn proud he was even given a name. I usually just give my elves numbers, and sometimes just colors.

I found a morbid amount of joy at the state of elves in human socieity when playing Origins. Probably blowback from decades of having to deal with their uppity airs in virtually every fantasy setting ever. 

That joy hasn't worn off, over a year later. If we're given the option to rub Fenris' nose into elven inferiority, I will be pleased. ;p

I will be doubly pleased if I get to sell him back to his master.

Fenris' short story makes me think he might have a soft spot for women. He might even be defensive towards them, in the chivalrous sort of way. I could be completely wrong though, I suppose it's mostly just wishful thinking.

I'm getting the feeling that throught the game, I'm going to be constantly screaming 'Oh you arrogant bastard! ...WHY DO YOU MAKE ME LOVE YOU?!' at my computer screen a lot when I'm talking to Fenris. xD My sanity will be questioned even more by my family.

I also get the feeling that, once I play through the game a few dozen times, I'm going to be making a fanfiction of Fenris and Hawkette having a kid. =3
