The Codex links the results to the Darkspawn but Fenris has that ability where he can phase through things. Is it possible that this ability was an attempt to recreate that spell? He did have lyrium burnt into his skin by a Tevinter magister and he was once a slave.

Good find. It could be the Magister's base for his experiment. It could be almost a reverse effect, being able to stay in the physical world but shift in the fade to draw power. 

I am actually thinking about postponing my usual first playthrough as a rogue and going with a mage. There seem to be several conflicts both in the story and the companions that could make for a very devious game.

I was thinking I might do that, too. Not because of the story, though, not that I don't care about that.  The Champion trailer just made the mage look like a lot of fun to play.

I'm conflicted though, if we do have to choose between Carver and Bethany I won't know what to pick. I'm actually very close to me sisters in real life and I'm curious to see how that will play out if I play as rogue but I also want to give Carver a chance to move past that whole "herp derp" that annoyed me so much.

I don't really see how??  The lyrium burned into Fenris' skin was to make him into a powerful warrior.  The storming of the Golden City was a mass event that sucked up huge quantities of lyrium and lifeblood.  I don't really see the connection, or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're getting at?  Also Fenris isn't a mage, so I imagine he has the same connection to the Fade that any non-mage elf would, just entering it in dreams.  OTOH he does have that white effect like Fade Shroud.  Will be interesting to see what that is.

This is interesting. Makes me wonder what the magister's end game was. Perhaps an exalted march on the Black City or the Maker himself. Hm...
