I'm not sure if anyone asked this before but I noticed this Codex entry the other day and this paragraph caught my eye:

Similarly, even when you send your mind into the Fade,
your body remains behind. Only once has this barrier been overcome, and
reputedly the spell required two-thirds of the lyrium in the Tevinter Imperium as well as the lifeblood of several hundred slaves. The results were utterly disastrous.

(from the wiki)

The Codex links the results to the Darkspawn but Fenris has that ability where he can phase through things. Is it possible that this ability was an attempt to recreate that spell? He did have lyrium burnt into his skin by a Tevinter magister and he was once a slave.

This is interesting. Makes me wonder what the magister's end game was. Perhaps an exalted march on the Black City or the Maker himself. Hm...

I love serious discussion! :wub::wub::wub::wub:

Make you wonder who's the elite boss in DA II aye? I kind of hope they will reveal that soon. Did they reveal that in Origin before the game release? Anyone know?

I do, as well. There's been a bit less of it as of late, but with VA and LI conformation I suppose it's understandable.

I'm thinking the big bad is whoever we choose it to be. From the impression I have so far the major conflict is going to be Chantry vs. Mages. So depending upon who you sided with either Meredith or Orsino. That's my guess.

*Gasp* Does that means if I choose the mages Fenris will despise me? And if I choose the Chantry Anders will hate me?

Here the Dragon Age wikia for the Friendship and Rivalry.

Now I'm kinda nervous about romancing Fenris in rivalry :P

I'm really wondering which romance is the one that has to begin in rivalry.  Can't be Isabela, right- since she's practically laying down in the "watch your back" encounter.

Who in the Anders-Vengeance synergy decides what to approve of?  "I approve!"  "Well I disapprove!"

I'm kinda grasping at straws here or using old cliches, but what if they are trying to MAKE mages? So they can overthrow the Chantry or something. Since most mages are caught and taken to the Circle, maybe first they need to make mages the Templars CAN'T catch.

Well in Tevinter the mages are the ones in charge, and the Black Divine goes along with it (or maybe is a mage? can't remember).  I would guess they want "superweapons" to use against the Qunari, since that seems to be their biggest problem as of game time.

What if Fenris was actually allowed to escape so they can test to see if he's catchable or not? I'm not sure what their backup plan is in case he did get caught, but it's food for thought.

Rambo!   If I was going to do that, I'd send him up against mercenaries rather than Tevinter soldiers.

World domination in the works??? When all other reasons fail, world domination is go! :o Maybe he was set loose for EVERYONE to catch him. Mercenaries, soldiers, fangirls, etc...

Why does the idea of Fenris sporting huge firearms of gigantic and explosive proportions so appealing to me?

Well, if Fenris and I are in love and he decides to leave me because I want to save the mages.....I'll kill him. Stay with me forever or die by my hand!!! :pinched:

You can change his mind, if you've got enough finesse, I assume. But, if you truly love something, you set it free. Amirite guize?

It would be interesting if a party member did leave and you end up having to fight them in the final showdown. Oh, the drama!

A quick thought: What if Fenris' abilities were created in a process more like how the dwarves created the golems?

Edit: Why would Fenris choose the Chantry over the mages, if that's what the story came down to? The game takes place in Kirkwall (and the Free Marches?), so the mages in the game would have nothing to do with Tevinter Magisters. I don't see why punishing a a group of mages that wouldn't even have access to the kind of magic that ruined Fenris' life, would help Fenris in anyway.

I don't really know much about how the Tevinters feel about the Chantry, so it's possible that Fenris could side with them.

That's a pretty good question,  especially since I can sort of see it.  I mean,  didn't the process also cause amnesia there?
I'm excited to see if the process is an important part of Fenris' storyline, actually.  I'm sure it is, but....

@Luey, thank you. :) ...but maybe I can be your daughter?

^ Regarding SavesTheDay question, I can see that too. Whatever the details of the process, it sounds painful, traumatic, and morally/ethically suspicious.

Actually that makes sense, I was only focusing on the whole phasing thing that Fenris does but the amnesia makes it sound more like Shale's story than anything.

Or maybe the magister just missed having the original 80's Gloworm so much that he wanted to make one of his own??

Okay, shutting up now. I have nothing worthwhile to add to the discussion other than quirky humor. I'm stilling calling PROTOTYPE, though.

As in his escape was allowed - FOR SCIENCE!

@Ineffable Igor: coincedentally I actually considered Florence + the Machines' song "Howl"  song too before I realized that it might fit the Anders Romance more, what with the revelation in his romance reveal short story haha.

:) Haha, I thought about Anders too, actually. Works either way for now, I guess, since we don't really know enough about either of the romances to really pick a fitting song.  I picked it because Fenris's name sort of associates him with wolves/beasts and such and the lyrics just seem to work with a blosoming rivalmance.

LOL, ok I'll be your son then.

Hmm maybe the Magister was obsessed with Fenris and wanted to make him sparkly?

Hawke: Why would you do that, Fenris? How could you...betray us, after all we've been through together?

Fenris: I don't like being tied down. Not to the Free Marches, not to Kirkwall, not to this party...and not to you.

Hawke: I...can understand that. But why this, why now? You said you loved me.

Fenris: I...I do love you, Hawke. But this is what I have to do. I like freedom far too much to give it up for anything. Even you.

Hawke: You know what's going to happen, Fenris. I won't kill you...but I can't say the same for the others. I'm giving you this chance. Run, and live.

Fenris: ...you win, Hawke. But don't come looking for me when you're done here. I'll be long gone. -turns to walk away-

Main Boss: Fenris, if you leave now, you'll die. I will come after you.

Fenris: Hah. Trust me, if you stay, you're going to die. -laughs and leaves-

-after the battle-

Carver: Sister...sister, are you...how are you holding up?

Hawke: Don't beat around the bush, Car.

Carver: Fine. How are you deaing with that bastard's betrayal?

Hawke: Don't call him that.

Carver: He used you, betrayed us, nearly got us killed, and you're still defending him?!

Hawke: He never used me. He loved me.

Carver: You believe that crock?!

Hawke: He wasn't lying. I could see it...in his eyes. He loves me, and betrayal or no, I still love him. I only...I only wish he had realized...

Carver: Realized what?

Hawke: I wish he had realized...that he was always free. -begins to quietly cry-

Isabela: Hawke...are you...crying?

Hawke: -giggles softly- I'm mourning my pride, Izzie. I made quite the fool out of myself, what with all that talk of running away with him...marrying him. -smiles despite the tears running down her cheeks, then wipes her eyes with the back of her hand and walks away-

Much as I adore Bishop, f-ed up little walking contradiction that he is, I will flip a **** if something similar happens with Fenris.  Once was enough, thanks, a girl can only have her heart ripped out and stomped on so many times.  Stupid sexy ranger and his commitment issues.<_<  And while we're on the subject, stupid sexy pilot and his self-worth issues.  Obsidian and their menfolk, yeesh....

Aw, now I just had a horrible thought. What if Fenris is like Morrigan and there is no possibility of a happy ending with him unless you get an expansion titled something like Wolf Hunt or something and even then the happy ending is kinda alluded to depending on how you look at it.

I'm guessing that's the idea.  Golems are made by pouring molten lyrium into orifices.   So I guess with Fenris they just stuck to burning channels in his skin.

Agh, every time I type that it makes me madder.

Edit: Why would Fenris choose the Chantry over the mages, if that's what the story came down to? We don't really know of course, but he might feel like it's necessary to have a leash on mages since in Tevinter it's the other way round from how it works in other Andrastian countries- the mages are in charge.  Here's the wiki on the Imperial Chantry.

I never got Witch Hunt. I always told myself Morrigan died in childbirth to make myself feel better about making Alistair sleep with her. x3 But I was thinking along those lines too, Luey.
