I don't mean to necro an old topic that people have moved on from, but sometimes this thread moves too fast!

A few pages back, some of you were discussing what the original purpose of Fenris' experiment conducted on him was for. I'm really interested to know that as well. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't DG say at one point that Fenris' lyrium brands weren't part of his original concept and were added later? I wonder if the phase punching was also added to that. It just makes me much more curious about his past!!

There were a few theories that popped up way back in the beginning.

1) Tevinter experimented with elves + lyrium to recreate just how Arlathanians were originally immortal
2) Tevinter experimented with an Organic, as opposed to Stone / Metal, Golem ala Golems of Amgarrak (Their "organic / Forbidden" studies with the Dwarves). Fenris is essentially... a golem.

So what kind of a vibe do you all get from Fenris' ministory? I'm sure this has already been discussed, but this thread grows like a tapeworm and I can't spend all night wandering through hundreds of pages.

Personally, I get the sense that Fenris is a bit of a bad boy with a strong confrontational streak who always, always has to be right. So unless Hawke is a bit of an aggressive badgirl herself, you can kiss a Friendship Romance goodbye. If you prefer to play a more diplomatic, thoughtful, understanding, gentle Hawke, you are probably in for a Rivalry Romance.

And if you are a Good Hawke who is constantly reaching out trying to be understanding with Fenris?

I really don't get the impression he'd ever say - "You are just... Too good for me. I don't... I simply don't..."

And more - "Your non confrontational behavior is going to be the ruin of us all and I find it absolutely naive and narrowminded. Why I'm even fond of you, I don't even know." (end being totally jerky and Heathcliffe / Darcy like, who were equally big headed jerky jerks)

I don't see him conceding to much of anything, but pride and arrogance will be his namestays.

Is it wrong that I see Fenris as an elf verson of Gatsu from Berserk, and his 'rivalry' relationship with Lady!Hawke being similar to Caska's? xD

Me thinks it's too soon to be calling him arrogant.

Lookie here at the definition: arrogant: 1. exaggerating or disposed to exaggerate one's own worth or importance often by an overbearing manner 2. showing an offensive attitude of superiority : proceeding from or characterized by arrogance

I don't see that. Aside from the fact that his entire race is treated like second rate by humans, he's been used and hunted. When he comes down the stairs and makes that pose, I see someone proud, confident and defensive. As for the short story, it displays him as a cheeky outlaw, not an arrogant jerk.

Yeah. I have to say I agree with you, Luka. Especially about the confident and defensive part.

Oh, I'd say arrogant. It seemed like he was rationalizing his long stay in one place as laziness, when it seemed more to me like he was waiting to be caught up with so he can remind the hunters that he's free and and 'by the way still gifted with spectacular murder powers allow me to demonstrate on your face.'

Playing it close to the chest because he knows, or thinks, he will always come out on top. Or to give himself the opportunity to come out on top. And then rub it in their faces.

While we only have a short story, screenshots, and a small clip to go by.. I still sense he is quite arrogant and very cocky.

His response to the people hunting him down? "Let them come". He is very confident in his own abilities to take care of confrontations, and from what the short story outlined, it doesn't seem like he cares much for the stakes. Hell, if I were a powerful body-weapon capable of phasing through other people, crushing their organs and was an untouchable person, I too would be pretty self assured.

Regardless, from what clues exist of him, I just don't see a Good Hawke friendship romance with Fenris. Aggression appeals to him, as well as confrontation. He scoffs at diplomacy (the short story says as much) and shuns weakness as pathetic (opinion on city elves / even the Dalish). It will inevitably be a Rival!Mance in that case.

However, if you prefer to play a more aggressive, badgirl... Friendship Romance with Fenris is highly more likely.

It'll be interesting having Varric, Isabela, and Fenris in your party. Each constantly trying to up one the other.

Varric: Yeah? Five headshots, twenty seconds!
Isabela: I cut four throats with a SINGLE dagger throw!
Fenris: I used mind bullets. Five headshots, four cut throats, two seconds.

Fenris has the advantage of being a spectacle. He glows and disintigrates organs. He puts on a show.

Yeah but Isabela has epic cleavage.  There is nothing more visually compelling.

I think the line between confidence and arrogance is often blurred. A person can be confident of their abilities without being arrogant. Thane springs to mind in this case. Though, I will admit, that the two often go hand in hand.

Am I opposed to a rival-mance? Absolutely not. In fact I'm expecting it because I'll be playing a mage… As long as rival-mance doesn't mean we're only doing it for the smex then I'm good.

He's like Dr. Manhattan but less naked and blue.

Ah but contrast draws the eye. Glowing elf in a dark cavern? Sorry boobs, Fenris wins.

The arrogance comes in the form of seeking, or rather, not attempting to avoid, conflict that he can use to demonstrate the skills he is oh so confident in.

What if it's daytime?  Call it a draw based on lighting conditions?

If this were Origins he'd porbably be just as naked in some people's games.

::pops in randomly:: I don't know if this has been mentioned/theorized/considered before -- I'm betting good money on it considering how many pages this thread has -- but I got the feeling that he's somehow a living enchantment, that instead of inscribing onto a rune they simply inscribed onto him.

Thane was spiritual and selfless. If the story says anything, Fenris is very selfish, cocky, and self assured. But we shall see.

Not sure how rival mances will be played out, dinno. But I could see Fenris betraying or walking out on someone who isn't willing to burn down a crate full of kittens if those kittens happen to come between him and ultimately completing his goals. Not needlessly, of course.

True, Thane did have his spirituality going for him. I guess all we can do is wait and see. Preconceptions and misconceptions and all that...

But… but… kittens.  :crying:

But he doesn't have boobs or thigh-high boots.  At best his lyrium-based abilities only allow him to catch up.

Beautiful women kicking butt is inherently more interesting than beautiful men kicking butt.  I can prove this on an abacus.

I think these rival/friend romances are SUCH an awesome addition. Its going to cause some REAL conflicts among players who really really REALLY want that specific LI but feel extremely squirmy burning a box of kittens in order to meet that LI's approval. If, by doing what Anders wants (destroying the Chantry) actually ends up destroying him....

I'm very interested to see what paths people ultimately will take. Regardless of what happens, there are definitely going to be some complicated results.
