well..from my experience..the name of the character tends to say a lot about the character. Imagine if John Rambo was re-named as Polly Pocket.

:D That just made me lol, I'm so happy I'm alone right now so my family won't look weirdly at me..

Fen-related:
I really hope we'll be able to recruit Fen before Izzy so I can bring him with me and see his reaction to Izzy freeing slaves. ^_^ I wonder if there will be some interesting party banter between those two regarding that subject..

Yeah, it would be interesting if Dragon Age's melee classes aren't limited to weapon-wielding...picturing Fenris or any assassin-based rogue raining martial arts mayhem in combat would be quite a sight...although mocapping the moves would be a pain.

Silent Sisters are supposed to fight like that, right?  Like Utha did.  Seem to recall a dev saying that was just too hard to implement in-game.  But I could be imagining things.

Yes, and confirmed by devs to not mean much, if anything (click on the blue "Bioware" tag under the thread and you can read the quotes :)

Yes it is, but why does it have to mean anything? It's just a cool name, that's all. And it's not a "wolf-demon", it's just a giant wolf.

Well, it would make more sense for why Brian Dennehey was giving him a hard time...And we would be saying things like "Man, he went all Pocket on him back there!"  In other words, the meaning of the name came after the characterization in the first movie

edit:  Unless you were referring to the 17th/18th century politician....I honestly don't know much about him, but Im sure that he would have still made a fine politician and judge for New Jersey if he were named Polly Pocket!

Seems to me that would be more of Anders/Vengeance personality rather than Fenris...but if it is (I tend to think at least one of them wouldn't because the writers wouldn't want to write essentially the same character twice for the game), it would make it interesting that there were no "normal" romances in the game...

I wonder if Anders is the rivalry romance, because you have to try to bring back the "old" Anders- i.e. oppose Vengeance-  in order for him to open up.  [/baseless speculation]

But Gaider confirmed him to be a unicorn prince.

And I don't see it as that odd of an statement considering the heaps of threads that get started stating that Flemeth is Fen'harel.

The Tevinter language absorbed a number of elven words, one among them being "fen" -- for "wolf". The root of the Tevinter word "Fenris" sharing a root with the name of the elven god "Fen'Harel".  The name  Fenris probably alludes to the name of the wolf, Fenrir of Norse mythology (Spelled and pronounced Fenris in Scandinavian languages) who bit off the right hand of the god Tyr. It was also foretold that he would kill the father of the gods, Odin, at Ragnarok. The name is relevant to him, but unrelated to his abilities.

You know, I'm really wondeirng what Hawke (or Fenris) is going to say in that situation. What do you say when you see that? Everything that you can say when you see someone for the first time (assuming that is the first time we meet him) makes no sense.

(In my mind) Hawke will probably first turn to Isabela and say (without sound) 'Oh my God Maker!' and that in the 'he is yummy kinda way' and not the 'I'm freaked out about it way'. I need therapy! :'D

That reminds me of that dialogue some pages back where someone had Hawke going "Mommy, can I keep him?" Posted Image

But seriously, I would be thinking some pretty perverted thoughts. I'd be dead within seconds.

I thought all the LI had a friendship and a rivalry romance path.
It's just that you are able to drastically change the NPC's pov with the rivalry path (if succeeded), since the rivalry path is when the NPC have some respect for you but disagree with your pov. That's what I understood about the rivalry path ^_^.

Selfish? For what, taking bread to survive? Wanting to defend himself? How on earth is he selfish anywhere?

Just about everything he does in that short is him stroking his ego, or looking for opportunities to or inciting reactions to also stroke his ego. Or rationalizing the excessive stroking of his ego.

He is so very, very free, after so awesomely freeing himself, and he wants you to noooticeeeee.

What??  Did we read the same story?  He tried to hide his markings at first, until he realized that he couldn't blend in anyway.  He wasn't trying to call attention to himself.  To me when he is ruminating about the innkeeper, he sounds weary, not cocky.

I could imagine that he didn't grow up a slave, though.  He seems to be a free man who simply won't bow under.  As far as his judgment of the elves, it sounds like he just expected elves who didn't have to deal with the possibility of being enslaved to be more dignified.  Sounds like a bit of naivete to me.  Slavery is the worst thing he can imagine, so as long as one isn't a slave things should be chipper.

That's how I read it, at any rate.

He did try to hide his markings, but to me it seemed like overall he wasn't trying all that hard to stay unnoticed. :) Like his heart wasn't in it. He still had to know he's a very distinctive looking person, with his sword and the armor and the hair, and so he's still very easy to spot despite covering his markings. He also knew they'd tracked him down and he took his sweet time lingering at the inn anyway.

There's some talk around that there is one romance that can only develop on the rivalry path.  That's what I was talking about.  But that could be forum urban legend.

Hi everyone!

Yes, I heard too about the romance in Rivalry path. I suppose it will depend on our Hawke's personnality and our LI. We'll have to keep our eyes open on who it's gonna be...

Just read about the "rivalry/friendship system" on the dragon age wikia page. If what it says is true (we don't really know for sure) then it's correct with the "certain options is only available with the rivalry-romance".

EDIT: Do we know for sure it's a male NPC it descripes? I could imagine it being Izzy. Since she's a hedonist and won't really mix feelings into the romance. It might take some rivalry and a change of her attitude of love to develope it..

So if Fenris does turn out to be the rival romance and if he is the jerk, does that mean you can't romance him if you play as a jerk yourself?

Mmm, I'm not sure about that, Elirian. Kindness is always seen as "better" to start in romance, but as long as we don't know exactly how to use the "Rivalry" option, we can only speculate.

Yes, it can also be for a f/f romance. Not necessary a m/f and m/m one.

Well, if he was a jerk, and you played the opposite which is nice, then you should get the rivalry path. At least I think that's how it works.

I would say that we'll soon find out, 'cept people are still arguing about Origins characters.  The writers obviously love to screw with us like that.  lol

But he no longer tries to hide. He is too proud to take the options that he has. And considering he is basically a neon sign in weird foreign clothes with a ridiculous weapon for whom people are actively hunting, staying in one place is practically an invitation to find him and fight, which eventually comes and he then enjoys.

It's like procrastinating an easy assignment that you have plenty of time to do, by telling yourself you'll do just as well in a rush or don't need the extra time, or can do better in a rush, etc etc, thereby making it all the more difficult for yourself in the end.Laziness, and/or overconfidence in one's own ablity... at least when I do that >_> Playing it unnecessarily close to the chest, as I said in a different post. Potentially sabotaging yourself, for the challenge and satisfaction of emerging against those odds. Except... it's his hard earned freedom he's juggling with. He must think he's good enough to deal with anything that comes his way, or want to test himself, or thinks he is 'above' living meekly even if that would provide him safety, or enjoy conflict, or wants to flex his freedom and damn the consequences, or some combination of those, which all says ego to me.

Maybe he is actually sick of being hunted but he sure is working verrrry hard to disappear. So I think this is about when the PC steps in and encourages him finish off his enemies once and for all or hide for real, as I believe Mike described in a video this/last week.

Hawke: Bwuhahahaha! Look at those kittens burn. By the way Fenris, you're pretty hawt. Wanna do the horizontal tango later?
Fenris: Sorry, Hawke, but no. While I like your style, you're not nearly nice enough for me.

That's gonna p*** a few people off. :?

I think it's up to interpretation. As Luka said, all we can do is agree to disagree. I see Fenris as being confident and tired as opposed to arrogant and d***ish. At this stage it's still up in the air and anyone could be right or wrong.  :)

Mr. Gaider said that rival-friend meter is decided not by what you tell to your companions, but what you do. So I'm assuming that if Fenris is the rival and you want to make sweet, sweet hate-rival-sex with him, you should do things he would disapprove, I think.

And for that, you would need or trial-and-error or a firm grasp of Fenris' personality. There's also the personal quests, that are probably the main place to get friendly/rival points.
