Well, the issue isn't the perversion or insanity. The frustration comes the when people who want to have discussions based on actual information are drowned out in favor of squeeing over the fandom construct (which is frankly so all over the place I'm hard pressed to find ways to describe what I shall now call 'Fan-ris'). There's a way to balance that, and everyone clamming up the minute a more serious or analytical topic brought up until something silly or zomg hawt comes along isn't the way to foster an environment where all sides feel comfortable contributing.
That made my brain hurt just now.
About the lyrium vein thingy mentioned earlier, wiki says "Fenris was altered: lyrium was burned into his flesh, its magic both stripping his memory as well as changing him forever."
He hasn't got lyrium in him (which explains why he hasn't gone doolally), but on him, they're like scars. And I imagine when he uses his ability, he partially shifts into the Fade, like an arcane warrior. He can also zap from one spot to the other faster than you can blink.

So if it's shipped throughout Thedas as a powder (or potion), I would imagine the magisters... did something to it to change its state when experimenting on Fenris. I would assume that the brands are some kind of malleable solid (not liquid or powder) similar to metal, and to have the effects that it has, it was obviously tampered with in some way.
That being the case, maybe the magisters were, in a way, trying to eliminate the many side effects of Lyrium (after all, if Mages could consume copious amounts of Lyrium without fear of becoming addled, they'd have a huge advantage, should they ever go to war again with the Chantry of Andraste) and the memory loss was simply an unexpected result?
Or maybe there are more side effects than the memory loss and aversion to touch that we just don't know about yet.

Eh, I actually find the subject of his Lyrium brands interesting. Considering Lyrium powder is an ingredient in Lyrium potions, I'd assume it's a type of soft mineral that can easily be ground down into a powder, and it's mined by dwaves because they have more of a resistance to its negative effects than humans and elves.

He has an aversion to being touched because of the scars, but it doesn't cause him pain, so said TGB. 'Altered forever' I take refers to his ability, without being a mage, of phasing partway into the Fade. As for the memory loss, considering what's been done to him it might have been due to shock.

I think you misjudge us and our motives. There's nothing wrong with perversity and insanity, as long as it follows from a premise that can hold up to scrutiny. Fenris as the short story describes him just calls for a different brand of perversity than seems to have caught on.
It's like earlier I brought up the idea that Fenris reminds me a bit of The Fountainhead's Howard Roark. That book does have a controversial sex scene in it involving that character.
I smiled when I read his short story and saw that he was closer to the Fenris I was hoping for. Or closer to the "stoic Fenris" I wanted. A truly stoic character would be neat but I can see how it might be hard to make him a LI if he were. Although that would by far have been the most interesting romance in the game. But I guess I'll have to wait until I get the game to see how stoic he is.
And ever since you mentioned Roark I can't help but picture his character as thread-Fenris and most of the time it fits rather snugly, not that it's anything worng with that.
Last year in English Lit class every student had to arrange a seminar where one scene from a famous book would be debated. I picked that book and the sex scene and my professor almost went crazy and first he didn't allow it.

I don't recall saying they caused him physical pain. I merely mentioned that his aversion to touch was a result of the experimentation. Though, I worded that poorly (I never mentioned that I considered it psycological and not physically painful), so I apologize.
Everything else in my post was about how the Lyrium in his brands may have been altered, not how said brands altered Fenris (or at least, that was my focus.) People were mentioning earlier in the thread that it was strange that Fenris only lost his memory, since Lyrium in general has mind addling effect on humans and elves when they're exposed to it raw.
I was just suggesting that perhaps the reason his mind hasn't been addled is because the very nature of the Lyrium itself was altered in some way, to both give him those snazzy phasing powers and reduce the risks of consuming/being exposed to large quantities of raw Lyrium.
It strikes me as something the Imperium might try. xD

Hmm... I'm getting the strategy guide, if you want I can look it up for you. I can send you a pm with 'take this quest in this year etc' to get Fenris. That way you don't have to run around searching for him at the wrong time/place.jenaisa wrote...
I'm still kinda worried about the possibility of going through the whole game without find to Fenris :S
I'm really curious about the lyrium brands, but I also wonder how big a part it will be of the game since it was added late in development. So the initial character was not written around the entire lyrium thing, which makes me even more curious because it is possible it will not play a big part at all.
OMG, I LOVE this fanart!!! :'D

Yeah, I know what you mean. The 'added late in development' thing really throws me off because his branding seem so central to his character now.
Or maybe I'm just over-thinking their importance.

Could it be that the artistic visible brands were added late, and the concept of him being branded but the brands not being visible was around the entire time? (I didn't see where this was mentioned) This would still make it a central part of his character.

Not sure what the exact date is. For me (living in the Netherlands, ordering from the UK) I will get the guide between 14-16 March, so around 3 days later than the game I guess.MorningBird wrote...

Same here, I'm not planning on using it in my first playthrough, I might check the non-spoiler parts though (attack descriptions, art and that sort of things). But if I can help someone enjoy the game more by looking up when/where to find Fenris I am willing to search for that bit of info. ^^MorningBird wrote...

Playing the game (for the first time) while constantly wondering where should I look, maybe I missed it, takes al the fun out of it, best to prevent that from happening.
