I'm hoping he's an anti-hero type character. Overly confident with a side helping of arrogance. Perhaps even a pinch of holier-than-thou.

Also, it would thrill me to no end if he turns out to be socially inept. A character tries to reach out to him, or vice versa, and then *bam* an oh-god-I-need-to-leave-the-room-this-is-so-uncomfortable BBC Office style awkward moment ensues that render all the people involved floundering.

Any ****iness is probably a reaction to being oppressed and enslaved. Finally being able to free oneself from that, by oneself, and having the crazy abilities with which to eliminate anyone who would try and take away that freedom... it probably feels good. The way I interpreted the story he was making excuses for waiting for new opponents to show up so he could fell them and continue to be free. If that makes any sense. An emotional 180, from having no power to having ridiculous amounts of it, and perhaps wanting to demonstrate it or prove it to himself and others or whatever.

Or maybe I'm seeing rationalization where there isn't any and he is actually sick of the chase. Then again he makes it clear that he is rejecting any of the options he has to blend in. So he's sabotaging himself. But why would he do that? Either to invite enemies and fell them thereby validating his hard-earned freedom further still or just because he likes combat. He seems to forget all about being tired of the game once he's got someone to kill so I'm guessing it's one or both. And to continue to behave like that, he's gotta be damn sure of himself.

Like I said earlier, the ****iness or reckless belligerence is in the one snapshot from what we can infer is around when we meet him. There is a decade for him and errybody else to change, and they inevitably will. Pseudo Hawke is certainly not putting up with that crap.

Edit: lolcensors.

That does make a lot of sense, actually. I never thought about it as some sort of rough 180 degree transition from powerless to powerful. When you look at it that way, most of the standard "arrogance" people would usually attach to a generally "cocky" attitude seems somewhat justified.
When I read the short story, I got this feeling that he'd lost the will to hide anymore; almost like it wasn't confidence that drove him out into the open, but sheer fatigue. But then when he was actually attacked, he did another 180 and seemed to somewhat enjoy the chase again.
And you're right about the character development that can happen in ten years, as well. Now that I think about it, even if he did start off as straight-up "cocky", which isn't even that likely, that could easily change in the interim of a decade. That's kind of a "duh" moment for me, right there. *tallies the seventh of hers today*
In other news, speculation makes my head hurt. >.<

(On a slightly off-topic note, Psuedo, I love your art! You're really amazing! )

Serious-cocky works for me. Super srs bsns is a turn-off. cocky to the point of annoyance is also a turn off. When a man thinks he's God's Gift to women/men/the world/whatever, all it evokes in me is a desire to emasculate.

This. All of it. But especially the last part.

Fenris: And once again the fair damsel dreamed herself a warrior and needed her Blue Elven Angel to save her.

Hawke: Hey Blue Elven Angel!!        Your shoes untied.<_<

Fenris: My what? *looks at bare feet*

Merril: *giggling like a mad woman*

Isabella: *Shaking her head/smirking* everytime.... ^_^

From reading the short story I got the vibe that Fenris has a bit of a humorous streak under all the attitude. Either that or he just finds scaring innocent women in revealing nighties terribly funny. Whatever the case, I hope he's funny, in some capacity. Probably very subtle.

What we don't see is Carver trying this with Merril only to make her cry and run away.

and then trying it with Aveline and getting bruised and bloody.

and then trying it with Isabella only to get warnings of a broken pelvis.
and then getting bruised and bloody AGAIN when Aveline hears what he said to Merril.^_^

Fenris can appreciate a nice pair of breasts when he sees one. Even when on the run.

That was easily my favorite part of the story. XDD I also believe that he's got quite a bit of snark and/or humor in him somewhere.

I didn't find breaking into a woman's home and scaring her half to death very funny. Imagine you are the woman. An armed man with no local insignia or armor or uniform just broke into your home, looked at your body and smiled. What are you going to think?

/We/ know he's not in there to do anything nefarious, but he takes the opportunity to scare her half to death anyway. As far as I can tell that's him reminding himself he's a nigh all-powerful badass. "LOL she fainted. I'm awesome." Small demonstrations of badassery* are worth stopping mid chase, I guess?

*Keeping with the "180 degree situational turn" by 'badass' I mean 'something that makes him feel powerful.'

I dunno. Lulz for the audience? Gratuituous lulz for the sake of the audience without meaning something about he character are not reeeally the point of a short story...

Yeah, when you look at it like that (ie. remember that you the reader knows he won't do anything, but the characters in the story don't) it's really more disturbing than funny.

What I've found implied from the little banters Gaider's written, IF they're actually in vague character for Fenris and weren't just all out of a someone's bum, is that Fenris actually very much has a sense of humour, it's just incredibly dry. Which I like a lot.

Or being enslaved and experimented upon and perhaps drugged up to prevent escape and whatever other indignities he had to suffer through at the whims of his master gave him a very warped sense of humor and this was just an example. Perhaps he was just amused at the irony of it all, being chased down by a bunch of armed hunters only to be "caught" by a unsuspecting citizen who just so happened to be awake and in the very room  of the very window he randomly chose to jump in. Kinda like laughing hysterically over something very minor after just recently going through a traumatic experience.
