So if what you're saying turns out to be true, what do you think would happen if Hawke didn't honor him with insults or complain about how full of himself he is, but instead just ignored it or didn't give him the reaction he was expecting? I mean up to this point he may be used to women fainting or men being scared of him. Maybe that's what the rivalry path is all about, Fenris doing things to try to be noticed by Hawke. It was said that the rivalry path led to the rival trying to one up and out do Hawke.
Eh this is more than I can infer from the story. Assuming the friendship path is getting revenge, and the rival path is getting him to cover his tracks and hide...
My best guess is that with a friend he'll like having someone who understands him and someone he can trust. Sort of the slow, gentle route to mellowing out. With a rival maybe all of his antagonistic energy goes towards Hawke, because by covering his tracks I am guessing he doesn't get to incite conflict with hunters in the streets, and he mellows out elsewhere but grumbles at Hawke. Because the guy needs to find the happy emotional/behavioral medium, otherwise he's going to endanger my party :|
I'd guess he's the rivalmance only. He seems to like conflict. A lot. But he might not be interested in someone who agrees with him as more than a friend. Maybe he likes the challenge. Feeds off the annoyance of someone who isn't intimidated by him enough to do what he wants. Reeeeally wants to get the upper hand. That's an unsubstantiated guess, though, it's just what i want, and this was a paragraph of Pseudo fantasy presented as legitimate speculation. (Surprise!)
