Hmm, I may have glossed over this in my rantings but there's an interesting hint here.  Why is Fenris putting up a facade of calm?  For whose benefit and why?  Is that the "stoic" veneer that's been hinted at?  Is he uncomfortable with his own inner rage?   That can't be easy to maintain

I'm thinking it's for his own benefit. Remember the "meditation" like comments that Gaider mentioned before? Fenris is, for some reason, afraid of losing control of himself, I think.

I'd actually like to touch on the fact that he has such dark eyebrows. This might sound silly, but it makes me wonder if the lyrium altered his appearance (aside from the scarring). He could have looked completely different before he was enslaved. Just a random thought, I suppose. ^^;

His hair could have been very dark, or not even that dark. A lot of people(or, most?) have darker-colored eyebrows than their hair color. He could have been dirty-blonde before. Image IPB

*Is natural dirty blonde* *Has dark brown eyebrows* I can agree with this. Usually your eyebrows are the same color as the roots of your hair. This suggests Fenris was a brown, dirty-blonde, or solid black.

The latter I think was shown in a screenshot where he, well, looks like a floating lyrium ghost.  Not sure if it effects or alters his personality, though.

Could the lyrium possibly have more of a negative effect on his system/body? Perhaps the more worked-up(in whatever way) he gets, the faster his blood flows, the worse the reaction. To that point, it might be more for his own health, to keep calm.
Or the "phasing" thing could have an emotional trigger(goes out of control if he gets too pissed off), and he likes to keep it in check.

The video does make that at least plausible.  I mean, he phased through the guy when he was pissed... "I am NOT a slave!"  And that "Veneer of Calm" damage effect grows with his growing anger.

Maybe the lyrium makes him lose himself? Causing maybe a temporary amnesia?
Dumb idea I know.

Maybe he feels that letting his resentment consume him would lead him into a blind rage? I think he said at some point in the video that he didn't want to just charge into Magister's place carelessly. Fenris seems more the tactical type.

His short story seems to support him being the tactical type as well.

Don't panic-- sometimes it takes a few minutes to show up. I noticed it usually happens when multiple people hit the "Submit post" button at the exact same time. It's happened to me a couple of times and I used to panic, and now I just calmly wait.

Here's a thought. I'm going to throw a guess and suggest that Fenris is not at all unique in that he is a slave with lyrium brands.

As expensive as he maybe, its possible he is not the only elf slave who is a walking lyrium deposit, but may have been the only one able to escape.

You can even be a polite arrogant jerk (or bad ass).  If it wasn't possible how would English actors ever have pulled off being villains in movies?

I LIKE this idea but it's unsupported. He definitely looks like he lost control versus Bowl Cut and he seemed fine enough afterwards.

Agreed.  And I am hoping for at least a little more oomph in his personality than I got from the video, since the Devs have promised we can banter with our companions.  It'll be more interesting than the "yes man" I had to be in Origins sometimes to get the most of out my companion's backstories.  But maybe that's just me.

De-lurking. Hi. ^^

On Fenris's hair color... I think it's highly possible that Fenris once had dark hair. In fact, if that isn't the case, I would consider the black brows a design flaw, since even though brows are naturally darker, then don't range at the entirely opposite end of the spectrum. A possible reason for the brows being dark is that when the body is under severe stress or trauma (lyrium branding) it can cause full or partial premature pigment loss in hair, and tends to affect the scalp before brows and body hair.

Now, on to the matter of his inner rage and his control of it. It may be that Fenris has discovered that channeling his anger makes him a better weapon than letting it fly free, and that is that. But, since character development should be part of the ten-year-long story and his origins are a mystery even to him, I prefer to think there was an incident or two in which Fenris completely surrendered to his emotions and suffered dire consequences. Killing a friend, causing harm to other slaves, etc. It leaves more for Hawke to explore if Fenris is actually keeping his emotions in because he is afraid of what will happen if he doesn't. Confronting it could lead to some interesting avenues.

Lyrium causes a myriad of mental issues. the addiction of it alone would cause mood swings, paranoia, twitchyness, ect.

and that's just when handled or drank as a potion.

I wonder if maybe he was just the only one still alive. Maybe they used other slaves as guinea pigs to see what they could try on Fenris, and considering the effects of lyrium, I doubt many of them survived too long.
