Okay.
I saw Laidlaw's gamespot stream thingie.
I can't take Fenris seriously.
It's just... He carries a hugenormous sword and goes Kitty Pryde on that dude's chest and has a mind-bendingly sexy voice. And yet, he's not the strong, handsome lad he seemed to be in screenshots.
He's an adorable widdle elf (with twig arms). With a face like that, he comes off as more endearing than sexy or badass.*
The elf redesign worked wonders for Merrill while it failed for him, IMO. Thoughts?
* But I could listen to him talk for HOURS. Dat Emery.
Honestly, while we saw roughly a half hour of gameplay concerning Fenris, Mike was talking over so much that I couldn't really hear much of the gameplay. I've had to form my opinions from what I can see, and because of that, I'm keeping myself open-minded since I don't have all the details.
I think I can agree with you on the thought of Fenris looking adorable, but for me that's only in certain poses with certain expressions. As for not looking the handsome elf in the screenshots, angle is quite important. The shot of his level up screen... not his best picture, in my opinion. And, I admit, his figure does make the greatsword on his back rather humorous, but in a way, i think that's the point.
He doesn't necessarily look like someone who can lift his own body weight, so he gets underestimated, by people in the game, and perhaps even by gamers. That way, when he does something impressive or cool by normal standards, it just makes him look all the more impressive.
Of course, this is just my opinion. David Gaider wrote him, not me, so I have really no idea if I'm just spouting rubbish.
But, in a simple answer to your question. I think the elven redesign hasn't done anything too terrible to him. We'll just have to wait until release, when we can really form our opinions.
*Thanks the European later release date so I can enjoy my lecture free Friday and the weekend*

Actually, his appearance and the way he comported himself in that gameplay video is starting to make me think he may not have been a slave. It's completely ridiculous to give a slave that kind of power and not kill them as soon as you're assured the process isn't fatal. After his memory loss he may have been kept as a slave, but wouldn't it make more sense if he'd been an elven mage? Not all Tevinter elves are slaves, after all, we encountered at least one that wasn't in DA:O. This is, of course, assuming the Tevinter Mage who was his master is the pragmatic sort, not the mad with power sort, and taking into account some things Gaider has said in the past about the depth of control you get with blood magic--blood magic isn't as sure a thing as its made out to be. You'd preferentially involve a willing colleague you're on good terms with over a slave who might use that power against you.
Nearly baseless speculation, of course, but interesting to me all the same.

I don't think it failed. It think it would be slightly unsettling for a human to see someone like him walking around, and I think it's also difficult to tell with just that snippet we got to see. In battle, he seemed believeable though.
To quote one of my favorite authors, "Size is no guarantee of power."
EDIT: Egad...that last line sounds terrible and kinda pervy. I really didn't mean it like that, I just wanted to quote Harry Potter..

Or he's a slave upon whom some Tevinters were experimenting with ways of physically entering the fade at will. Which could possibly explain why Cassandra has him listed as a suspect in the whole brink of war thing. And why the Magister would go to such great lengths to get him back.
Perhaps they didn't expect the power work, or a non-mage to be able to use it by himself.
Its still entirely possible that, yes, they were just using him as a test subject and meant to do the pragmatic thing and he got out before they had a chance. But doesn't he seem awfully erudite? I don't think its just Gideon Emery's voice, something about his body language strikes me as out of place. I would expect such an experience to strip a mage of their magic, as well, but that's also baseless speculation that requires more info on the process itself and whether its at all similar to how they make Tranquil.
Not trying to make the character into something it isn't, here, just... we certainly don't have the whole of the story and I don't think we will get the whole of the story unless this Tevinter Mage shows up and decides to monologue.

Uh no's, my blood mage Hawkette is having evil thoughts again...
And is it just me or do his legs seem to go on forever? I’m not complaining, I just wasn't expecting him to be so tall.

"I am not a slave" might not just be Fenris declaring his freedom. I get the feeling that he was either some sort of soldier or bodyguard of some sort, because who would give a slave extensive combat training? It makes no sense that a common slave would be given the abillity to potentially rebel against their master.
From what the DA:O codex tells us the Magisters of Tevinter are a paranoid lot who are always trying to one-up eachother, Fenris might have heard of the Magister's experiments and came to him willingly. The experiment worked out, Fen got turned into a living weapon do you really think that the Magister would just let the elf go out into the world and let all the other mages see what he was up to? Of course not. So the Magister enslaved Fenris.
Or at least that's my theory until I play DA2

Ah, but if his lyrium-granted Fade-inspired powers are DA2's version of Arcane Warrior, strength is irrelevant. Skill with a blade still matters, though, having a lot of power behind your swings isn't enough. This also seems likely to me, that he was a soldier or a bodyguard and wasn't just a passive unwilling subject.

I've known for a long time that Fenris isn't specially muscular or anything like that. And I don't care. I still love this elf for who and what he is.He'll be my first romance for sure, if M!Hawke x Fenris happens to be confirmed. (I saw lot of confirmations on French websites but non on Bioware's, it's frustrating.

Makes me think if he started out a willing participant, then the memory loss came in and made him forget his reasons for doing so. That'd be a twist~ I half expect the Magister to monologue about Fenris' past and he'd have a Luke Skywalker moment. "NO, THAT'S NOT TRUE. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE."
