Its still entirely possible that, yes, they were just using him as a test subject and meant to do the pragmatic thing and he got out before they had a chance. But doesn't he seem awfully erudite? I don't think its just Gideon Emery's voice, something about his body language strikes me as out of place. I would expect such an experience to strip a mage of their magic, as well, but that's also baseless speculation that requires more info on the process itself and whether its at all similar to how they make Tranquil.
"I am not a slave" might not just be Fenris declaring his freedom. I get the feeling that he was either some sort of soldier or bodyguard of some sort, because who would give a slave extensive combat training? It makes no sense that a common slave would be given the abillity to potentially rebel against their master.
From what the DA:O codex tells us the Magisters of Tevinter are a paranoid lot who are always trying to one-up eachother, Fenris might have heard of the Magister's experiments and came to him willingly. The experiment worked out, Fen got turned into a living weapon do you really think that the Magister would just let the elf go out into the world and let all the other mages see what he was up to? Of course not. So the Magister enslaved Fenris.
Or at least that's my theory until I play DA2
Ah, but if his lyrium-granted Fade-inspired powers are DA2's version of Arcane Warrior, strength is irrelevant. Skill with a blade still matters, though, having a lot of power behind your swings isn't enough. This also seems likely to me, that he was a soldier or a bodyguard and wasn't just a passive unwilling subject.
Makes me think if he started out a willing participant, then the memory loss came in and made him forget his reasons for doing so. That'd be a twist~ I half expect the Magister to monologue about Fenris' past and he'd have a Luke Skywalker moment. "NO, THAT'S NOT TRUE. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE."Oh, God, don't let the Magister be his father.Ah, how the imagination wanders~ xD

PS: So happy they covered up Flemeth. Old ladies should not have slits as high as hers was.
LoL sorry I have to say this, but as old as Flemeth is she does have a great body - my mom saw this post (she is 67) and says she would kill to have a figure like that again, and she sure Would show it of to
Back to Fenris, yes he is adorable, I just wanted to give him a hug

Ok, can't find the info, seems like they all rectified and got too way ahead by saying he was the bi-option so soon <_< guess it was the "Zevran Side Effect", though both elves are nothing alike (beside being awesome^^)

Luckily, Fenris can phase right through and avoid that pesky hand loss situation.

Well Varric pulled a Yoda in that video when he used the "evade" ability..go look at the Varric hideout tread 3.0 and you'll see what I mean..
Back to Fenris.
I kind of hope his rival-path is when you stop him from going on some quest for vengeance (I don't expect the magister to die in Fen's recruitment quest, it can't be that "easy"). And then the rival-romance will be getting past that arrogant cold shell of his.. why isn't it March already
What really got to me was the way he said "impressive" and later on rolled his eyes when talking about the imperial bounty hunters..I see great snarky jerk potential there.

1 : He got away or
2 : He wasn't here form the beginning and tricked Fenris into thinking so. (most likely to me)
Well he IS kind of stoic/cold, and not a total jerk. Though I expect him to do some more stuff, considering he used Hawke so easily.
Mmm, I remembered something.
A question everyone: Beside Luka and I for sure, who wants to do a M!Hawke x Fenris romance? When they confirmed the new romance, someone asked who was the bi romance, and Chris answered.....

Ah, yes, all elves are gay... I have a proof for elves never being gay again in Thedas that involves footwear and makes about as much sense as that blanket statement. Personally, I want Fenris to be the m/m LI, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

A WILD SPECULATION HAS APPEARED!
After watching that video a few times, I noticed what you're talking about (Mike, Y U SO LOUD?). The snark is very much there, which I'm happy about. I get the feeling he was only being polite because he felt he could use Hawke again to accomplish his own goals. (At the point when he says something like, "I have met few in my travels that have sought anything more than personal gain," he may have felt a little...guilty?)
To me, the romances have to deal with respect and how Hawke goes about aquiring it from their LI. For Fenris, I think you'll have to confront the Magister at some point, no matter which romance path you choose. How you deal with the Magister will determine whether it effects Rival or Friendship. As for the romance actually developing, I think Friendship would deal more with Hawke showing respect for Fenris and his wishes. As far as he remembers, he had never met someone who was so willingly self-less to help him face his problems. Hawke has nothing to really gain from helping Fenris, so such an act would be touching (AND EVENTUALLY LEAD TO TRUE LUB). For the Rival romance, I believe Hawke would be more into challenging Fenris and his goals. Sort of testing him with his/her authority, questioning his motives and such. In which case Fenris is constantly trying to prove himself to Hawke and making him frustrated. (This could also be an outlet for the rage he keeps bottled up. Something else to focus on instead of his revenge.) All that tension can lead to something...Hm. Now that I think about it, Rivalmance just became much more appealing.
