Mike actually said something along the lines 'so you see it wasn't only about getting the items from the chest. We didn't want the characters to be 'I need your help, I'm going with you.'.
So Hawke was apparently there to pick up some stuff.

Fenris’ Tevinter fugitive specialization (posted pages back) hints he may seem calm and collected on the outside, but there will be deep seated anger/trust issues (cue angst), which is really no surprise with his colourful past.
But I think Fenris still has a lot oflikeable bastardjerk potential. Just a more subtle and manipulative sort as others have already pointed out. And this is where my semi-planned out Hawkette and Fenris are going to have a problem – there can only be one mastermind manipulator in the group and she will be wearing the robes.
I refuse to yield to the green eyed devil. *eye shields ON*
