Blight:

Lothering-

The world shook. Not from some supernatural force, but by one that was all too natural. An ogre, the ogre was alive once more, and in a strange pantomime of its first appearance Bethany had once again fallen to its unholy might. For this was not Lothering, this was a dream, a recurring vision that through some strange reason Fenris had been privy to for the last few nights. It was no longer startling, or some sort of inconvenience to him as it had been before. It was familiar and like a familiar story it lacked the sense of shock that it originally conveyed.

Of course he never did tell her about what he'd seen at night. It would sound crazy, and he wasn't crazy it was just a vision, nothing more. The thing was he had never seen an ogre before, and had never known anyone named Bethany. Nor had he ever been anywhere that had ever been called Lothering. Or had he? Perhaps this was some trick of his mind. Yet that couldn't quite make sense, the woman,  Bethany looked familiar to him, had her hair been shorter, and her eyes a different color she'd be almost identical to the woman curled up next to him. Well that was something.

"Hawke?"

"Mnm?"

"Does the name Bethany mean anything to you?"

She jerks awake.

"I don't remember telling you about her."

"Who was she?"

"My sister, she was a mage like me. She was-"

"Killed by an ogre near Lothering."

"How did you..."

"Know that? I have no idea a vision of what happened to her just...came to me."

"Like a dream? Well that's interesting. (notices Fenris looking a little nervous) Relax sweetheart I'm not going to go tearing through your head, its just that viewing the dreams of others tends to be something only someone with access to The Fade can do. Guess I'll just need to get used to being a lot more open with you."

"I'd like to know more about her, if it isn't an imposition."

"Fen if we can see eachother's dreams then you deserve an explanation. It all started when the Blight broke out in Ferelden...."

I believe I'm at no. 669 Image IPB, next door to MRC.

Okay, here's my prompt for Smile.

She had a million smiles, and he’d seen them all.

He’d seen the bright ones, the ones that would light up the room, her and everyone around her. Those smiles could be seen in her eyes and heard in her laughter. Those were the smiles that would bring one to his own face, rare as it was.

She also had not so radiant smiles. There were some that she’d show to their enemies; those were smug, knowing smirks that spoke volumes of her confidence. Some, she would use in front of patrons, people who wanted help from her in some fashion. She would smile patiently at them while they rambled. The sickly sweet ones, which she used for charming her way out, were seldom on her face. And others… well, like Hawke often said, sometimes it was just fun to ****** people off with a smile.

And then, he’d seen the smiles that she would show only when she was sad. He’d been confused by it at first, until he’d accidently walked in on her during the “anniversary”. It was the anniversary of the day her little brother had died as they escaped Lothering. She’d had tears in her eyes for that moment, until Bethany appeared and Hawke had wiped them away, returning the mask of cheerful, big sister to her face. After that, he understood.

But, his favourite smile –not that he really had one, of course– were the small, quiet smiles, the ones that he wasn’t entirely sure she knew about. Whenever she caught sight of a friend, whether himself or one of their companions, she would smile as if she hadn’t seen them in years. Whenever their group had a night out down the tavern, she would find a corner to sit in with a mug of cider and would watch in amusement at the more frivolous actions and would smile endearingly.

She had a million smiles, and he’d seen them all.

-x-x-

He was smiling again. She loved seeing him smile, and in her opinion, it didn’t happen enough. True, with all that he’d been through, she didn’t expect everything to be sunshine and rainbows with him. But still, the fact that he could still smile was a great comfort.

She often feared that he was being too serious, not ever letting himself relax. It had been hysterical when she had contracted Avaline and Isabela’s help to get him to go out for a drink. It had gotten to the point where Isabela had suggested going back to her room in The Hanged Man to get a length of rope. “How much do you have?” Avaline had asked. “How much do we need?” had been Isabela’s answer.

She’d cracked up at that.

When they’d finally convinced him, he’d sat stiffly in the quietest corner, watching the antics of drunken men disapprovingly. After a while, she sat next to him, and they’d just talked. What they’d talked about, she couldn’t completely remember. The Hanged Man had good cider. But, whatever the topics, he hadn’t refused next time she asked him.

Regardless, he was smiling again and, judging by where his eyes lingered, he found her attire for the night interesting to say the least. Of course, the fact the she’d been absolutely sodden by the time she had arrived in The Hanged Man, and had had no choice but to accept Isabela’s offer to borrow a set of dry clothes, had absolutely nothing to do with it…

… yeah right.

She watched him as he picked up his glass of Avalia Pamunalis from the bar and walked up to the group’s usual table, although, she was currently the only one occupying it. She smiled as he approached.

“May I join you, Hawke?” he asked politely.

“It’s a free table, Fenris,” she chuckled, constantly surprised by his manners.

He didn’t speak as he sat down beside her. They didn’t talk, enjoying each other’s company while watching everyone else made fools of themselves in the way that only drunks can. Their attention would occasionally be drawn to one group or another, and sometimes their own. When one lot of off-duty guards finally left, the cold breeze from the open door nipped at Hawke’s skin and she shivered.

“Isabela certainly has a unique sense of style, does she not?” Fenris asked finally, his lips twitching in amusement.

“She does,” Hawke agreed. “While I’m grateful that she and I are the same size, I wish she had a pair of leggings I could wear underneath this.”

“I suppose the tunic also leaves something to be desired,” he noted casually, sipping his drink.

“That depends on who’s looking, I guess,” she teased lightly.

Fenris paused in surprise, the glass still to his lips. His eyes flickered towards her slightly before staring ahead. He continued drinking, draining the glass before returning it to the table. Once finished, he did not look back at her, and if the slight blush was anything to go by, he probably wasn’t going to anytime soon.

“See anything you like?” she continued, smiling as innocently as she could.

She knew she hadn’t pulled it off.

She had to credit Fenris when he finally looked back at her, his eyes never once straying from her face. He scrutinised every inch, every pore, every single part, as if looking for her answer. When his eyes stopped roaming, he held her gaze.

“Perhaps,” he replied cryptically, smirking much like she probably was.

While he hadn’t exactly said yes to her question… he also hadn’t said no. That was promising.

With nothing else to do, Hawke smiled.

“Barkeep! Another round!”

Edit: Cheers PheonixImage IPB

Well, as much as I hate to leave, I need to sleep. It's almost 2 in the morning, and while I have no lectures tommorrow... later?... I'm close to collapsing on my keyboard. Not that I mind too much, I'll be sleeping in front of my Fenris screen background. But, bed sounds nice.

Thanks again for the map Phoenix. That was a perfect thing to end my night.

*yawn* So tired. Going to bed now. Good night fellow Fen-fans.

Edited for spelling. Can tell I'm tired. Night.

Well not you you. :P The OP of it. I'm feeling particularly lazy tonight. Beating my head into my keyboard trying to make my fanfic do what I want it to do while being pissed off at my boyfriend. Leaves me with little energy.

Aww, hun *hugs*.

Try putting some music on - I write to music most of the time, it might help with the writers block.

I have a playlist for it! :D  I should turn it on, yes. Yes. You are correct.

Or if all else fails, hang the character by his toes until he stops trying to write himself.

Prompt: Lothering

Fenris knew that this was what she needed, but he couldn't shake the feeling of unease he felt.  She had listened to his every grievance, she had fought beside him when no one else would, she was the one who could make him smile at even the bleakest parts of his life. He knew that he owed her this and was happy that for once that maybe he could support her.

Hawke: *Eyes downcast.* The land, it's still blackened...

Fenris: The Blight scars the land like nothing else, but with time... *He places an arm on her shoulder* It will recover.

Hawke gave him that little smile that always drove him crazy.  Is it one of someone who's been comforted or one thankful for me at least trying to comfort her? At times I've seen her ruthless, but at times I've seen her caring. Is she my leader or is she a companion? Is she my friend or have we finally grown to something more?   Fenris shook his head. He could spend all day attempting to understand her. They walked on.

Hawke: This was where we met Aveline--

Fenris: And where Wesly had become corrupted.

Hawke: You remember? I must have told you that 4 years ago...

Fenris: I have a very good memory for... some things.

There it was again. Damn that smile. Damn that smile straight to hell.

They moved onwards. All the while Fenris watched Hawke carefully.  In all these years,  she's always held up some form of guard up. She met challenges headfirst and forgot the consequenses, but now... now was different.  Her pace slowed, and her eyes shifted more than usual.  Small changes, but Fenris caught them. He could always catch them.

Soon they stood on a plain, looking over a slope.  Hawke walked up to it and just stared outwards.

Hawke: It was from here he came.  He charged from this slope and took us.

Fenris remained silent. There were times for talking and times for comfort. This was a time for listening.

Hawke: He ran up and swatted us away like we were nothing. Bethany and Mother were in between us and the ogre.   Aveline was too sidewinded to get it's attention.  The ogre started roaring like a challenged alpha male, when in hindsight *Hawke touched her belt* it probably wasn't more than a few years old. She wanted to protect Mother, but I was always the better mage.

Hawke almost seemed bitter about that, Fenris surmised. He knew that he should say something, but for once found his words not forthcoming. They just stood there for a while looking past the slope. Fenris thinking of something to say, and Hawke being the mystery she is. Eventually, Fenris was able to open his mouth.

Fenris: You are stronger now Hawke. Your actions are things of legend now. Bethany would have been proud of you, and I... I am proud to have been given this chance to know you.

Hawke turned around, smiling a new smile. A smile so dazzling that Fenris almost became weak kneed. And just like that it was gone. Replaced by a look of horror while her entire face paled.  Fenris turned until he saw it. A staff next to a shell of a body. The body wasn't resting as one in peace. Bits of it were bitten off and the chest had a sword sticking out of it. The Damned souless basterds hadn't left her with dignity.

Fenris turned back to Hawke and felt his heart split in two. Her eyes were of one who had lost all hope in the world. Her mouth agape as if she was in midsentece. What Fenris saw from her he wish couldn't be seen. Her mind had been broken and her world had been torn asunder.

He rushed her and hugged her fiercly as she soon followed suit. He heard her cry Bethany's name a few times and then he only heard her cry. The contact made him feel pain, but he knew his pain was nothing compared to hers.

It was then that he knew.  If ever asked, his arm was hers. Anything she needed ,he knew he would grant. Her pain would always be his, and her joy would always be his joy.

It was then, that Fenris knew he loved her.

@ Thread: This was my first try at an actual story. Kind of long, but let me know if you like it. Inspiration came from an earlier glomping.
