A whole lot, as per the status quo, really.
Personally, I think every character someone makes includes a part of them, whether consciously or not (there has to be points of identification for writers, for instance, and those points in created characters are little pieces of us) just as artists portray some part of themselves with their work.
Consciously playing a character as "you in this situation" can be rewarding and fun, because you have flaws and mistakes. It's when a character turns into a perfect version of you or what you think you should be that it becomes boring, in my opinion.
Exactly! Flaws are what separates a Mary Sue from a real human being. Knowing your flaws and making those mistakes you would probably make; it feels oddly cleansing to understand yourself from the outside and inside at the same time, after a fashion.
And I very much agree about the value of identification.

EDIT: The song was hilarious. XD

I'm so glad you noticed that! Electric Six is some craaaaaazy boys.
This is a love song for myself,
For me, by me, everything it oughta be--
A self-centered melody in the key of me...
I will always be here for me (Fortunately for me!)
Come with me, my destiny... (lies with me!)
I will sing this song of me (to an audience of me!)AstraDrakkar wrote...

Have a Fenris, Wynne [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]
Yes, please! But next time, can I have the one where Lady Hawke is staring at Fenris's booty?
I love the booty.

I am so glad there aren't any
vocals in the Love Theme (so it seems). Felt like Leliana and Morrigan
were singing somewhere in the backround while I was "licking lamposts"

*lmao and dies* OMG Margaret!!! It's too true.

Nice as that woman's voice is, I can definitely do without hearing Leli singing during my sex scenes.

As you can see, I have truly lost my mind waiting for Mar. 8th ../../../images/forum/emoticons/andy.png
Ohh, but I can't eat them... the puppy eyes, they call out, saying "Don't eat me alive, Hawke! Not literally, anyway!"
You think I could get the padded cell next to yours? That jacket with the long arms looks comfy...

I hope at the very least if Fenris has a logic fail Hawke can point it out.
Yes, please. It drives me MAD when I thought of something major which seemed glaringly obvious that didn't seem to enter the developer's head. I loved the Fallout games for that very reason; the first two constantly had options that I never would've thought of, which were hilarious and/or insightful. It was constant discovery and it ruled, whereas I can't stand it when I think of a logic point that I can't even point out.

I play forums- basedRPG's, and the
very first character I ever created was based off of myself.
Ultimately I found it too exposing. I began to take things personally
that weren't intended to be taken as anything more than elements of the
RPG, and this almost ruined my love of forum-based RPG's until I changed
the way I role-played.
Ultimately I returned to them with a
character that had NOTHING to do with myself, and I found it a lot more
enjoyable, and it's something I've preferred to do since.

I really don't find it difficult to get into the mindset of 'the
character', but that may just be because that's the style of
role-playing I'm most accustomed to, whereas other people are more
accustomed to identifying the PC as an alternate version of who they are
in RL.
Mmm, I very much understand that. Getting your personal feelings involved is in some situations very, very bad. I admit, I don't do this in tabletop or online games; only CRPGs. My dwarven warlord and drow sorceress have some kind of thread I can identify with, but gender is generally the only major thing they have in common with me. It's easier to play such a game in that mode, and very fun.
