I don't know, I totally agree on the fan servic-y part, but I'm happy for everyone that they will be able to romance everyone they want. Though it is kinda annoying for me, because I normally don't play male characters and Merrill would have been a good reason to play as one. I know I can still play as a maleHawke just for Merrill, but I prefer femHawke, so I see no reason to play as a male character.

)
I know that it's just a game, but that sort of thing breaks imersion for me, it cheapens the story AND the characters. One of the best things about the fantasy genre is how it adds certain fantastic elements to real world situations and interactions, and making those interactions anything less than what I would expect from real life affects the experience of the story in a negative way for me. I feel sort of the same about unrealistic armors, weapons, and combat although of course these things are much easier for me to overlook since they're
really just aesthetic.

yeah, but it is kinda measuring with two standards (not sure this is the right expression).Erani wrote...
^ I don't really think it's fan service...I mean you get 3 other companions who are not romanceable and presumably straight (4 if you include your sibling), so it's not unreasonable to have 4 out of 8 who are bi. Also, remember your companions come from all over the place, different countries and regions, so the four of them being bi is actually pretty likely.
They only put one dwarf and two elves in the party because they are a 'minority' in (that part of) the world. But they are willing to put 4 bi companions in your party? It's just weird, I don't have the statistics but I'm pretty sure the majority of the people on this planet (and I assume also in Thedas) are straight.
Just to be clear, I have absolutely no problem with bi/gay people (would be like hating myself sort of) but I just don't understand the reasoning behind an 'all-bi' decision. :/

I understand your argument, but having romances in the first place is pretty fan-servicy, no? Why is all bi more so than 2 bi 2 straight? It just means more game options, more roleplaying, more replayability, more happy. It doesn't take choice away, it adds it.

It might come across as a bit weird, but I'm sure this is a practical choice, I think that is the reasoning behind it. As for the majority being straight, you may be right about that, but having only 2 people you could romance over the course of 10 years seems unrealistic. I think this was the only way to do it.
Also, Mr. Priestly swiftly shot down the new thread idea

No. I'd need a much larger sample size than 8 to buy that reasoning. Law of large numbers and everything. It just seems WAY too coincidental. I'm also fairly certain that if you picked four people at random from different countries all over the world the odds of all four of them being bisexual are tiny. I'd be a little surprised if even two of them were, to be honest.

Think in terms of time. 10 years, 2 romance options? That's very little room to work with, so to speak. 4 seems more reasonable.

I see your point but the issue with only one dwarf, Varric, I believe arises from the fact that dwarves living on the surface are a very small minority. Even if there are many surfacers, compared to how many dwarves live in Orzammar, it is a small ratio. We'd also need to see how many dwarves live in Kirkwall/surrounding areas, and how likely it would have been to have, let's say 2 or 3 dwarves in your party.
Regarding the bisexuality issue, well, nothing I've read or seen confirms that sexual orientation in the DA universe is 100% similar to real life Earth...or that it is perceived the same way. It looks as though being gay/bi is seen as a bit eccentric, but not sinful or "bad"...therefore, we really have no idea how many "people" are bi/gay in Dragon Age.
As for real life, LOL, statistics on sexual orientation are always meant to be taken with a grain of salt because surveys always depend on how candid people chose to be when answering questions about themselves. The general trend seems to be # of gay/bi people increases every decade, but again that may just reflect more people living "in the open".

I can kind of agree with this. I have nothing against being gay/bi but making all 4 bi just for the sake of it would be a bit meaningless. Hopefully if they ARE all bi it fits into the story.
There is one thing though that makes me wonder. I checked a post with all the speculation in the M/M thread. Gaider was quoted as saying making them all bi is an option, but it's his least favorite option. It is possible that they made Isabela and Merill bi for a reason and Anders and Fenris are yet to be revealed. Though that's a long shot I suppose.
