Why was NWN considered an amazing rpg?

I think games like Kotor fixed many of the problems with the NWN first-person-ish model, although the days of BG/BG2 were long over. Still, Kotor was a good game.
What about NWN was I missing?

I don't think anyone played it for the story.

Why was NWN considered an amazing rpg? I remember I had a terribly hard time getting into it. The storyline, combat, level design, interesting art, etc. for me was many, many steps down from BG2.

NWN sucked as far as the Original Campaign is concerned. It was amazing because of the amazing user made content.

This.
The OC was crap. The expansions were good. The toolset was amazing. The DM Client was extremely cool and the only one of its kind, though I think NWN 2 eventually had one too.

I recall the reception to it being lukewarm at best amongst most gamers.

So just when I think that Bioware can't possibly make a worse game, they go ahead and make something like Dragon Age... and TOTALLY REDEEM THEMSELVES!
I heart this game with mouth. kthxbai

So user-made content was BG2-level?

Story was just a smidgen above mediocre, yeah. But you will never find a toolset/community support that outdoes NWN in the realm of RPGs. My experience in PWs constantly reminds me of how impersonal MMOs are, and that all I'm looking for in the future is NWN 1 with a substantially better engine and deeper gameplay, which NWN2 was, unfortunately, not.

Ahh, well, I guess I didn't download the mods. It seems weird to me that the campaign in the game... the thing that should highlight what the game can do... should have been better. I never understood the favourable reviews, as that is what my first, second and 20th impression would have been based on. I do remember playing it for many, many days... and I just thought it was bad.

Some of it. If you are looking to play user made content I suggest A Dance With Rogues Part 1 and 2. Combined they are 800k+ words of pure awesome and enjoyable gameplay.

Oh I agree with you. NWN was quite a disappointment after the pure awesomeness of BG2. Then we got kotor, which was a decent game but also had a crap story, then the unrelenting suckfest of Jade Empire.

I felt the same way, somewhat. BG2 was like the pinnacle of rpg gaming. It's so hard to top their own efforts here, although DA is a good attempt.
Jade empire was... not as easy to get into. I don't think I actually finished the game. I actually fell asleep many times playing it. I dunno if it was the dialog options, or the combat. I recall only getting to the main city and doing lots of the sidequests and some of the main quests without leaving that city for good. I think I got the ship too. Kotor seemed a lot better to me. I liked the stories in Kotor1/2 though.

The beginning in particular was dreadfully boring, and to this day if someone says 'waterdavian creatures' I still have the urge to punch them in the face.

Have you ever played D&D ? These so-called single player RPG games were born from a social creature called Dungeons and Dragons which was a game played with several friends, typically 3-6 people. NWN was never meant to be played alone so not only did you miss the point but you missed the whole amazing part of it.
There were however plenty of single player mods that were really good.

I played AD&D first and second editions extensively in my high school years, and the multiplayer NWN experience was not at all similar. Pencil and paper RPGs will always be better than PC RPGs in my opinion because the only limitation is your imagination.

Don't use the past tense here, folks! There are excellent roleplay worlds with player quality far above the MMOs and the ability to actually affect the world, still around and very active.
http://www.avlis.org is a perfect example, but there are many others. www.neverwinterconnections.com has a partial list...

ditto.
I played on the Fraghaus Krynn server..chance of perma death after lvl 10, good crafting system/hardcore mod, full loot PVP. At a 96 player server it was awesome. And that is just the one I played on the most, there were many many others that were just as varied and actually required full in character at all times, GM events were often heard of...it is the measuring stick I weigh all MMO's against, and so far they all fall short of how much I enjoyed NWN persistant world servers.
