Darker, grittier and sexier are all words that do not necessarily equate to better.

Darkness, in the best sense narratively speaking, is meant to convey maturity and difficult, morally ambiguous choices. It is meant to make the reader or player feel on edge, as though preconceptions have to be altered and weakness abandoned to survive in a world with deeply-rooted suffering. DA did this through the debilitating wars facing elves and dwarves, the social inequality and cruelty within human society, the dehumanizing and deadly conditions facing mages, and religious wars swirling around absent/non-existent gods. The darkspawn themselves, you can argue, are simply meant to show the depth of these dysfunctions.

Darkness is not simply introducing more sadism or overt violence into a story. So, if darkness means that DA2 will continue or build upon a deeply dysfunctional world requiring the player to make soul-wrenching choices just to hold things together until tomorrow, then that is good. If it means more blood splatter, then that is bad.

"Grittier and sexier," then, are simply tools of immersion. Grit is texture, the feeling that the world is responsive and feels real, in whatever sense the audience requires. Sex... well, sex in a game just helps us keep hormones at tolerable levels. It is also very immersive, as eyes bug out of heads looking at pixelated nasty bits.

Also, where exactly is the source of this whole "darker, grittier, sexier" slogan?

I think that's reaching a bit.

Hmm, no, I'm not sure you can. Well I guess you could pull all sorts of baseless things out of your ass if you wanted to, but that would be silly. If I've been trolled, or my sarcasmometer  is broken,  then *tips his hat*

Oh please, thats PCness gone mad.

While I was not being sincere, I don't think it is reaching all that far. I do not suggest we make a discussion of it, but America does have a reputation for suing anyone and anything for looking at you funny. That somebody could have taken offence at "darker" does not seem implausible to me.

It's not a slogan. It's how Robin described the game, however.

So...the game scenes largely take place at night, there is alot of sand and there is a wide appeal to sexual attraction in it's various forms of physical, visual and emotional fetishes to the many diverse players who may play this game? Wow, so it's like a Baywatch beachparty at night...but with swords and dragons...cool! I learned alot from this description!

Isn't she also the one who did an entire interview about the game saying nothing but PR lines?

America has a reputation for a wide range of things that aren't necessarily true. Despite what you may have seen, America does not have streets of gold where gangsters engage in constant shootouts.

What we do have is bad news reporting. News casters like Fox and publications like U.S. News and World Report have been known to report lawsuits that are complete fabrications or to misrepresent the actual facts of the case. Meanwhile, the number of lawsuits and the amounts paid out have US has steadily fallen.

Not a big fan of the hollywood approach bioware do lately with their games, but I got Witcher 2 for something more .. Adult I guess? I have a hard time coming up with a word that dosnt sound like an insult, which is annoying becouse the game looks fun.(DA2 I mean)

Just way too much cleavage/Lack of pants/clothes from recent bioware games, and alot of fancy explosions and effects

And you think The Witcher two will contain less of these things?

Geralt will always have pants, maybe?

Funny how the line is drawn at someone's ding-dang-doodle.

Ah... so maybe we should give her a pass for busting out old stand-by phrases for hyping? At least she didn't say, "DA2 goes to 11," right?

I'd vote for the mantra to be "Once they play the game... boom goes the dynamite," personally.

I really don't get that. A lot of people told me that The Witcher was all adult and nuanced, but to me it seems like the kind of thing a thirteen year old thinks is mature.

Surprisingly it actually does seem to contain less of these things than DA2 currently. Weird isn't it?
Witcher 2 actually seems to have gotten more mature (sex cards are gone I hear) while DA2 became a cartoon. Perhaps after the ridicule, the DA3 pendulum will swing back towards actually being dark and gritty.

Now that you mention it, the only gameplay I have seen of TWT had Gerald in his undies wrestling around with some prison guards.   But yeah, The Witcher isn't a great beacon of sexual maturity, it's approach to sexuality is amusing bordering on hilarious.  I was living in Germany when it launched so I was privy to the uncencored version, I honestly thought it was supposed to come across as humorous when I played it, apparently some people on both sides take it pretty seriously though.

Where Bioware shows cleavage, CD red will show full frontal. When Bioware says damn, CD red will say....can't even type it.

It's all good imo, cause it's part of real life - unsanitized, real. The way I like it. But TW2 will likely be the edgier, more imposing game. Bioware is still testing the waters.

Cant it be both?

I dont think Da2 looks that cartoony, sure it isnt as "realistic" but its far from some Looney-Toon type kids game.

I think we should give it a chance. And plus if DA2 stayed the same as Origins people would just complain how it or The Witcher are ripping each other off and such. This is how it keeps itself apart.

Hopefully it'll work out, maybe it wont. But I have faith it will.

Yeah because DA:O would never put your character in their underwear in prison and make you take out a guard...... ^_^

The original witcher had a bad habit of bludgeoning you with it's themes while screaming "look how edgy I am". Hopefully DA2 wont be so heavy handed.

The Witcher 2 will have something better than sex card. It will have interactive sex scenes like Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy.

What about God of War type ones where you force your manliness on several ladies of questionable libido?

I personally loved the "Hey, remember that decision you made, yeah? In case you forgot already, well, this here, this is the consequence of that decision, TADA!" Truly masters of subtlety.

I have no clue as to whether they've borrowed elements from God of War.

The only way you can borrow elements from God of War is if you agree to let Kratos beat the snot out of you for 20 mins.

Then he'll consider it...

The dialog and plot developments were nuanced and subtle. It was written for adults, not young adults, like  DA:O most likely was. The consequences weren't subtle, nor should they have been. TW had better C&C imo.

For real? That'd be a hell of a lot better than DA:O's sex in underwear or PG ME2 scenes. If you're going to put it in do it well I say.

It was actually a long time before I found out Heavy Rain had that. My first playthrough they did not end up together romantically.
