Didn't see a thread based only on this and wanted to start one.  A few questions for the devs to start off with:

1) Is the UI in the video final?

2) Does the UI scale for higher resolutions?

And general discussion:

I think the UI looks bad.  The video was great and made me very happy overall, but the UI was a clear negative for me in an otherwise great looking video.  For one the clean and modern style does not fit the DA universe, but perhaps more importantly the UI looks HUGE!  That big fat bar on the bottom and the massive health and mana bars for the characters is a real eyesore.

I hope this was placeholder UI.

It's the final UI, or at least very close to it. The UI was pretty much the only thing I didn't like about the video.

Map is ginormous. Skill bar is too big. Everything is too big. Please let it be customizable.

My question: why change the UI the way they have? Sure maybe tweak the DAO UI a bit but it didn't need massive changes. The only really bad thing was during the end game not all abilities could fit on the quickbar.

I am a fan of the new UI I like how simple and clean it is. Especially like the translucent hotbar. I found at least from the video it is smaller I find then the DA:O one. At least on my computer (my resolution is 1366x768), I found DA:O took up a lot of vertical and horizontal space and made it so only had the center of the screen clear. For me the only improvement I would like to see is making it all translucent grey and that it fades away when not being used.

Same, I like clean lines. I thought the DA:O UI was overly fussy.

I much prefer the way health information is presented, and really like that it tells you as they use spells. Plus the "eye flow" is better.

The interface showed in the Combat Walktrough video is... AWFUL!

Damn, squared party icons? Sure, it's only a matter of personal taste but all the rest? All the refinement, the amazing details you can observe in DA:Origins are gone, at least in this video, in this stage. I felt like I was watching a revamped GUI from Dungeon Siege 2 or something that old.

Will they give it the same attention as they did for DA:O? If you don't know what I'm talking about, compare the details in DA:O quickbar, even in the empty slots. Compare the "Paused" sign at middle screen when the game is paused. DA:2, as shown in this CW video is UGLY! I do hope it's just a pre-finished GUI and it has nothing to do with the low console users degree of exigence but if it is not, when the game is released and if this poor interface is the final stuff, I will go in a killing spree and shotgun every console I can find in every store that sells them that I can find!

Working on a comparison video between DA:O and this DA2-CW vid.

Now this is a Rogue in a awesomely developed game, even with its bugs, flaws, etc. FU EA if you give us less than this!

I'm okay with the new interface, though I think I liked the old area of effect indicators better than the plain orange circles. But maybe there's something to be said for simplicity.

There is something to be said for simplicity sure. But there is something to be said about having the UI not look like the Windows 7 taskbar too. Origins UI and menus were nice as they visually added to the look and character of the game. The UI in the video is so generic, you could put it in any modern game. Compared to Origins, it all looks terribly uninspired and a definite step backwards visually.

I thought they wanted some "ownable" art style- does that not apply to the UI too?

The style of the interface doesn't bug me at all. The size of it, however, does.

The size of the quickbar is okay, if on the large side. It's just those portaits and huuuge bars. They take up a good third of the screen. If the UI scales to resolution, that thing is gigantic and uncalled for on an HD, much less a monitor.

The new portraits I can deal with, but the skill bar buttons at the bottom are awful. My attention is drawn to the bottom of the interface rather than it blending into the bigger picture. I wasnt distracted in Origins, but this UI is definitely distracting.

A good UI should enhance the game and draw no attention to itself. Its job is to be invisible in that regard. The current UI, to me, sticks out like a sore thumb.

I liked the new video, but now hope more than ever that mods are in the game, so I can adjust the UI. Or perhaps BW could have a configure option so I can make it look like the DAO UI.

I don't mean to be overly critical BW, I am sure you had reasons behind chaning it, but it is too distracting for my tastes.

I want to know what resolution they were playing the demo at- was that like on a 1920x1080 or what? I'm wondering if the quickbar on the bottom can be lengthened or shortened too like Origins or if we'll be stuck having it across the whole bottom of the screen just because they have the 2 quick slots for the potions?

This is my sole concern. The style of it, I like. Symbols are easier to recognize. But they don't need to be that big. And props to Brock for the win 7 comparison. Knew I had seen it before. :P

I think the new UI was designed to look less cluttery, which it does. I personally would have stuck with a uniform design on the buttons, specifically using the hexagon style. I would have also shrunk the bar, so that it isn't too big. The character portraits are also too close together, I would have liked to seen a gutter space between them.

Edit: filaminstrel has better pictures.

agreed, this quick bar really looks great for me. and I like new icons, they looks easy to identify. unlike the icons in origins, always makes me confused when I am trying to play in real time

Can we have the old portraits back? The squares just aren't doing it for me :(

Other than that.. I'm all for a simpler, sharper, less-cluttered interface.. preferably with a smaller hotbar and/or with a more transluscent background.

It's just those bars - they're so annoying. At least with the DA:O arrangement, they weren't in your light of sight the entire time.

Oddly, I really appreciate that. I played a healer a lot in MMOs, so not having the health bars as the dominant feature on the UI seems wierd and alien to me.

The bars HAVE to go. Seriously they looks amateurish, take up too much screen real estate and Origins portrait method looked far better.

Sorry but styles means a lot for a game.

It's like DA:O was designed by really cool architects while DA2 was designed by real "square-thinking" engineers!

Can you tell which of these are designed by architects and which is by engineers?

PS.: Uploading a comparison video atm... yeah..  people without critic sense might hate me!

And as another MMO healer.. I have to say, I'd rather have more of my screen dedicated to the action than the health bars, unless I am only allowed to look at health bars and not enjoy the action going on around me. In a situation where I have to keep track of multiple targets to heal on my screen (instead of just one or two guys), then I want to know where they are so I can bloody click on them (unless I can select them through their portrait, but even then, I don't want to give up my precious screen real-estate because I chose to play the healer).

And whoa, I'm agreeing with Jinstar here.

Hm, for comparison's sake, this seems to be the same resolution screenshot in Origins:

They're a bit too big, certainly, but I much prefer the information it presents, as well as the position.

edit: take that back, looking at the screen above. Don't have a problem with the size either. I'd call that prominant rather than dominant.

There are probably pills for that.

Oh I like the information, I love how I can see what attack/skill each party member is using at a glance. That's pretty spiffy.

I don't feel like knowing that Hawke has more overall stamina than Aveline is overly useful, I just want to know when I need to take a stamina potion or hit second wind. The portraits were great at showing when you were "low" in terms of percentage.
