I'm more with this. Of course I will still play the game. Can't help it. Addict Gamers are addicts! But it is not that "subjective". Baroque is baroque, minimalism is minimalism, renaissance is renaissance, modernism is modernism. Were they all "subjective" we would have no categories for them. And yeah, I would hate a Picasso's UI for a DA game, no matter how much I may love his work.

What are you talking about? We aren't debating how to classify something. We are debating whether that something is aesthetically pleasing or not. I don't see how that relates at all to an issue of categorization.

The new UI totaly ruins any game immersion, it clashes horribly with the art style of the rest of the game.

Erm, clashes with the art style of DA:O, I imagine it fits quite nicely with the art style of DA2.

Unless the enviroment has been suddenly advanced the equivalent of half a millenia, I'd say the UI also clashes with the DA:2 art style.

Try a millenia. DA2 is not 1500s level tech. More like faux 1200s.

Full plate wasn't developed until late fifteenth century, if I'm not mistaken. The usage of gunpowder (exclusively as artillery) also fits the late fifteenth century.
But that's not the point. The point is, the UI clashes thematically with what we know of the setting. Someone earlier mention that all UIs are inmersion breakers. That is only correct to a degree. A thematically fitting UI helps keeping the tone and feeling of the setting, and reduces the amount of inmersion breaking of the UI.

We've seen a handful of interface screens and some of the new, more contrasting tapestry cinematics. It seems entirely in line with all of those. It's a part of, not seperate to the art style. That this style might be incongruent with the period? Maybe. Is that uncommon in a ui?

So, following your train of thought, the art style is inconsistent across the game. At least we agree on something.

Not saying I see it that way, just that I can see that folk might think so.

Yep, the GUI is totally inconsistent with the rest of the new art style. Instead of the edgy metallic that it logically should be, it's plain, colorful, simplistic and too big.

It really screams placeholder. I'm dumbfounded to hear it's final, considering how good looking and functional Origins' was.

I love the new UI. I just think it should be retroactive with the old one.

too simple, too colorful, too "modern" ... neither bar nor portraits fit into the Dragon Age theme ...

Are we SURE that it's final? Maybe this is all a big misunderstanding.... I'd actually find that much easier to believe than that GUI being the final product--which just seems crazy, regardless of what is to me an entirely unappealing art style.

I can't recal which thread, but Laidlaw did comment on how that UI is pretty much the final one.

:crying:  I was trying to be optimistic.  Well, at least they can change the Times New Roman pretty easily before release, right???

Let's hope modders can save the day with the UI because while not gamebreaking it's pretty bland. I mean the portraits are downright hideous. Can't wait for that to be fixed.

Now that's what I'm talking about!  Awesomeness

As for the UI, while I dont really like DA2s new UI(the mini-map being the sole exception), I really dont see DAO's UI fitting DA2 either.

Sure, DAO has a UI that would fit with any generic fantasy art style, but that was because DAO had a generic fantasy art style.  DA2 really doesnt.  I mean, some of the biggest proponents of DAO's UI have described it in words as delicate, intricately woven, pale gold, and filigree.  That does not fit with DA2

If I had creative control, I would keep the mini-map, but scrap the rest of the basic UI (I think the menus are fine from what ive seen so far).  As for what I want the UI, I am really not sure, but its neither DA2 or DAO

I believe I mentioned earlier that the UI should have flames, skulls, and random black iron spikes.

Which proves the writing will be good. That level of sarcasm bodes well. ;)

I find a UI can't have enough faux stone and filigree.

You know, I once stumbled across an art website where the interface was based on Giger's biomechoid and xeno artwork. I liked it when the menu twisted its head and hissed at me.

That would be awesome. Any interface like that would mean a first day buy for me.

Also, Ridley Scott is working on the Aliens prequels.

wow...

you DO realize ANY UI is a game immersion breaker because it is a constant reminder that you are, INDEED, playing a game right? it does not matter if it fits the  setting or not it's still there right infront of your eyes.

That's why I want the UI elements in a frame.

Heh, I 've read that in a few places, and every time my brain does a funny little dance that goes something like "Oh, ridley scott? That's bound to be goo.....wait, when was the last time he made a good film?"
