PS.: Uploading a comparison video atm... yeah..  people without critic sense might hate me!

The biggest difference I notice is no detached camera in the DA2 demo.  I am hoping that is still going to be added.

The interface in DA2 definitely draws more attention to itself, though this may be because of the bland setting.  Again, hoping the final game will be visually better and maybe the interface will look more appropriate then.  I do prefer the portraits and health/mana indicators as they were in DAO, less obtrusive.  I take it that they are huge now because console players can't see them from the couch otherwise.

I agree that the health and mana/energy bars take up too much space on the screen. I would suggest aligning them vertically to the portraits, similar to the DA:O interface.

They need to be parallel to achieve the stated aim, and if you flipped the frame on it's side, it would encroach further towards the centre.

Amyntas wrote...
And is there a specific reason why the portaits are now at the bottom of the screen?

Eye flow. (I should check that's not a term I made up, it's photographic I believe) You're looking at less areas of the screen for all of your information. It probably seems a small thing, but it's definitely something UI design should take seriously.

The translucent map is neat, and the interface as a whole looks clean, albeit a bit too clean and sterile compared to DA:O.

Also the bars should be shorter and/or under the portraits IMO. This way they look like a custom WoW bar addon made by a 5 year old. No offense.

The new GUI looks horrendous and like it was created in about 30 seconds by the work experience kid!

While I liked what the video had to show overall, I have to agree that the UI needs to be tweaked a bit. At least keep it in the original manner with the circular bars rather than this horizontal stuff.

It also looks too clean. Needs more... character.

haha yea I have to agree... it does look like it was put together in 30 seconds. Even compare the old icons. They had so much more character!

The UI does look very dwarven.

I like my UIs big and simple, so perhaps I'm not the best judge, but the DA2 UI seems to be uglier, but much more functional. I dig the new positioning of the char portraits.

The thing is, the DA:O UI has a really high resolution, while it doesn't look like the DA2 UI is at a high resoluton. This all goes back to what Shorts asked - will the UI become smaller if we increase the resolution?

I popped open DA:O now, and if you lower the resolution, the portraits are really obnoxious in terms of how much space they take up. A solid resolution is very important to making th UI not so cluttered.

I actually like some DA2 UI features, like the fact the pause button is now on the quickbar.

I could live with the bars if they were minimized or if there is a minimize toggle to reduce the bar and portrait size ~30%. I definitely don't need visual portrait confirmation of my party and would rather have more screen real estate to be immersed in the game. Please also reduce the text font size for the party member behavior/actions. In general, please significantly reduce the size of the party member UI.

Do you also hate pretty things?

But seriously, folks...I still have serious reservations about the new UI when it comes to usability, but that stuff can be addressed, or perhaps it already has, and I'm not seeing it from the short video.  What can't be denied, however, is that this new UI has a new aesthetic that looks slapdash, blocky and simply not pleasing to the eye.  Mike Laidlaw hasn't said that this is going to change...but he hasn't said it's set in stone either.  Hopefully they'll at least add some flourishes, streamline it, and change the color palette before the game goes gold.

What can't be denied is something entirely subjective?

This certainly isn't the reason I don't like the UI. I actually think it's good aesthetically. Just out of place for a fantasy game, and find the bars obtrusive.

Hope you are right, but I´m not holding my breath. I still haven´t seen a change in the visuals I consider an improvement over Origins.
Over the top fighting can be done good (ie Arkham Asylum, although here going flashy in the wrong moment doesn´t work well), so I´ll wait for longer gameplay videos. At least the feeling of the combat doesn´t seem very changed, and no more waiting for especial ranged attacks nor aligning for especial attacks is good.

Do we know if close combat has friendly fire? Would be a good way to balance the hitting arcs. Also, I´d like enemy FF here.

As far as we know, it's nightmare only and appears to apply to all AOE including melee.

In fairness, I didn't like the old one. I thought it was overly fussy and lacked clarity.

Mmmm, I'll grant you blocky (which I like), but the others? Wholey subjective. I think it looks well designed, and the increased clarity and flow (which is still subjective, but far less so) would seem to back that up. As for pleasing, as I say, I think it is.

To me, it looks like it belongs in a flash game.  Yeah, it's subjective that I don't think it looks good, but if you've read up on things like color and design theory, and there are reasons why people prefer certain color schemes or designs for websites, for example.  Perhaps there are people who really, really enjoy looking at a webpage for hours on end that has a hot pink background and uses lime green Comic Sans font, and those people are entitled to their opinion, but in general, it's not a good idea to cater to that select group.

I'm not saying you don't have good reasons not to like the UI. Lots of stuff I don't like about it.

I just found it funny you basically said "this totally subjective evaluation is completely undeniable."

I can't speak to things like colour theory or design or anything of the sort, but in terms of aesthetic we are trading one kind of ugly for a simpler but out of place UI, at least from my POV.

Where are the menus in the new UI? DAO's had those buttons across the top to open the Journal and Inventory and whatnot. I don't see similar buttons on the DA2 UI.

Are they there?

Well, like I said, everyone's opinions are subjective.  But going back to my own concerns, something like the minimap being spread out on the screen, yet also translucent, will cause someone like me who is pretty much legally blind, a lot of problems when it comes to usability.  Whether you prefer pretty gold scrollwork or not, that's something that should be addressed.

There are other issues, like colors that are distracting, and can cause eye strain, that ought to be addressed, too, whether or not people think that those colors look "cool".  When design infringes on the ease of use of a product, it's objectively bad.

Like someone mentioned, bottom right corner. I'm more interested in your thoughts on having a pause button on the quickbar. I'm a huge fan. I know you mentioned that you felt the game being manageable with one hand on the mouse and one child in your lap was important to you. Would this relocation help?

Blegh!

The new icons are fug; too bright, too ultra-modern looking and don't fit easily into the DA medieval style of things. But since they're not a "game-breaker" in the developer's eyes, I guess we're gonna have to start liking them.

Agreed with those who think that the health/stam/mana status bars are too long and cluttery and with those who will sorely miss the position and circular style of the DA:O portraits.

Having said that though, I look forward to seeing what kind of mods will be borne of this dislike of the new ui.
