Mark Meer. He is the iconic voice for Shepard, when someone hears his voice, they know it's Mass Effect. Can't say the same thing for Hale.

Well, thats due to the marketing decision to market the male version of Shepard only, and nothing to do with the amazing talents of Jennifer Hale...

Glad you feel that Meer is iconic for you, but Hale blows him out of the water, talent wise. You believe her words when she speaks. Meer sounds like he's reading off a page

They both play their part well don't try and say one sucks. As far as I'm concerned Male and Female Shepard are two different people (obviously). Male Shepard is a lot more reserved like a guy who has seen to much **** and has gone through hell which fits with the default sole survivor Shepard, Female Shepard is a lot more bold and...vibrant I guess would be the word.

Mark Meer isn't going anywhere at this point in the trilogy.  Guess "Meer-bashing" is a bit like the "Mako-hate".....it becomes the "cool" thing to do, and next you know everybody's doing it....

Look what happened to the mako:P

But I agree, I have no problem with either. Jennifer Hale is a slightly better voice actor in some situations, but I don't see the obsessio with how she is the god of voice acting. She really isn't that much better then Mark Meer.

No it has to do with the fact that the internet only has two modes. Love it and It's worse than Hitler.

There is no middle ground so when people say "The Mako needs better handling and less wonky terrain" it turns into "The Mako is a peice of **** and needs to be removed". Similarly "Mark Meer's Shepard is a bit flat" turns into "Mark Meer sucks replace him all hail Jennifer Hale lord queen!!!!!!!!" or something like that.

I think we can agree Mark Meer is not a bad actor, but his depiction of Shep is a bit mono-toned and for lack of  a better word, dull. Who would you cast in his place?

they better dont change Sheps voice in the 3rd game, I can't think in other voice when I remember Shepard male.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with Meer's performance of Shepard. It kinda reminds of C-3PO's facial expression - it's so neutral that the audience can project whatever they expect to see (or in Meer's case hear) onto the performance. To my ears, Hale's delivery often DOES have more emotion, but it's not always consistent with how I imagine my Shep would feel in a given situation. This becomes slightly jarring, and takes me out of the experience somewhat. In that respect, Meer's performance is, to me, better than Hale's. Don't get me wrong, I really like Jennifer Hale. However, she definitely dropped the ball as Femshep, in that she can do much better. Her performance as Femshep was nowhere near as stellar as her turn as Bastilla Shaan in the KotOR games...

Jennifer Hale is the better actor overall, but I do really like Mark Meer's portrayal of Shepard. I think his sometimes-stiff delivery actually adds to the characterization... it makes me feel like underneath the badass exterior, Shepard is a bit of a dork. :)

I'm more than happy with Mr. Meer and by this point seeing Mark Vanderloo or some other male Shepard other than my main seems really weird - basically my main is the image I first think of when someone says Commander Shepard. Same goes for the voice - if they ended up changing it around I think my head would explode. That part aside I am happy with Meer's talents so I'll just leave it at that.

Oh look, this topic again.

OP I set a challenge for you. Get a microphone, get one of Shepard's speeches, record yourself doing it, put it on the net for us all to hear and I'll bet any money you fail at sounding anything as good as Meer does.

As for the choices you and some others have made, never going to happen. Why? Well, other than either them or their agents seeing doing video games as 'slumming it', there is then the fact of how much dialogue Shepard has and how much it would cost to hire such people to do that many lines. That and of course the ability to get them to do any additional work in any future DLCs.

Fredvdp pretty much summed up the point of Meer's performance, Meer is perfectly fine, he does a great job and is just as good as Hale who I also think is fine.

Bashing of either of them is just childish.

^qft

I like both Meer and Hale, even though the Sheppards they portray are totally different.

Hale's Sheppard is the strongest leading female I have ever heard. Her character sounds genuinely strong without sounding like a looks-strong-but-is-actually-weak-penis-envying b*tch. However, I always felt that my paragon & renegade femsheps sounded like exactly the same person making different choices.

Meer's Sheppard I actually feel has more variety. To me, the paragon and renegade lines actually sound like they're from two different people. I also found the maleshep could have a humorous side that I've never gotten out of the femshep. In this way, I feel my current 3 malesheps seem like 3 different people, not just the same guy playing 3 different classes.

If were up to me, I wouldn't sack either Hale or Meer.

Yes. That, coupled with Vanderloo's vacuous expression makes all the difference in the world!

who ever does the voice has to have the ability to sound mulitcultural.

That sentence does not make sence

Unless there is a differant voice actor for every race portrayed theres no way for one person to sound multicultural.

You'd also run the issue of characters being too racially stereotyped.

Does anyone remember in Mass Effect 1 that trailer with Shepard Garrus and Ashley, they are standing near the galaxy map and a distress signal pops up from Calistan? That voice of Shepard where he says something like "So many decisions to make...none of them easy." I wanted that voice for my Shepard!!!!

Meer could do a lot better. There is a lack of emotion in most lines. Don't get me started on femshp voice. Thats the 1 reason I don't make a fem shep. Meer has SOME changes in tone at least. Not just a monotone the whole game.

Meer does a superior Renegade.  From ME1 ("big stupid jellyfish!") to ME2 ("How about 'goodbye'?"), he's superb.

His Paragon is more by-the-book, it's a different interpretation of the character.

I like Meer. But if I had to, probably Nathan Fillion or Steve Blum. Blum's just got that natural badass sound to his voice
