I would like to know how people would feel about putting melee weapons in the game. Like a mass effect field baton or sword. Or even a class that only uses melee weapons and forms their basis of attack on that.

Like having implants or genetic modifications that alow them to dodge gun fire for a limited time, and other things of that nature, it'd be an interesting way to play. Comments?

And this has nothing to do with being upset with the way Mass Effect plays or any thing like that. Just wondering.

No.

It's a tpsrpg, with only the most crude and basic melee.

Shotguns beat swords.

But shotguns don't beat a vanguard charge and then a giant hammer to the face.

I'd be for it!

No, Melee weapons have no place in ME.

I know how you feel I just remember hearing mention of them in ME1, and imagine that all combatants would at least carry one on their person.

It's already hard enough to suspend my disbelief at the fact that the optimal strategy for enemies is to bullrush me because I can't physically provide enough firepower downrange to stop them before they finish charging 100 meters across the room at me to deliver melee attacks to my face, the last gorram thing I need is for all semblance of plausibility to collapse when melee weapons become more effective than assault rifles at close range.

Well I figured shotguns would be more effective at close range, but if we think of the logistics of something like that, if someone charges at you and gets close enough because they feel a gun wouldn't work, their pulling out a melee weapon.

I'm just saying I think it would make sense for combatants to have them. It would add even more to ME's realism. But I understand where your coming from.

Ok, but the basic problem is this; either melee weapons are largely useless (an enemy 10 meters away will waste you with any gun but a sniper before you get close), or charging enemies with swords becomes a viable tactic, which looks totally ridiculous in a modern or scifi setting.

Arguably, krogan charging already is ridiculous, but...

Here's another thread about this.  I'm not in favor of, say, selecting a knife from the weapon selection menu and then "pulling the trigger" for melee attacks.  My [repeated] suggestion is to bite off some of Resident Evil's style and incorporate a system similar to the special melee attacks presented in the most recent iterations of the franchise.  When enemies are staggering or otherwise vulnerable and if Shepard is close enough to them he'd get a button prompt for melee (B on the xbox).  If the player presses B, Shepard would perform a 1-3 second animation of a melee attack, with a different style depending on the position of the enemy or Shepard's class.

Oh no, I know what you mean, the whole melee class thing was just an idea and would still have to incorporate the whole cover system, because charging could either get them killed or be completely ridiculous.

And as for using the melee weapons I feel if you just simply replace the melee command, that is all you would need. It doesn't need to be equipped just used immediately extremely fast. Because honestly I hate when enemies somehow get in close and put you in a clinch.

But a quick use mass effect knife or something could keep it from happening.lol Either way I don't have an unwavering need for them. I just think it would be a nice addition.

I actually wouldn't mind something like that. I feel quick command options would also be a good addition

Well, melee has always been in my mind when I pictured "how Mass Effect could have been better". Then Deus Ex Human Revolution showed up taking pretty much all I thought about it so it's too late now for ME3.

But Deus Ex is a different type of game. You can literally beat it with out killing anyone at all or you can be stealthy you can't do that in Mass Effect.

The Tueller Drill (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tueller_Drill) says that an enemy with a knife can cover ~21 feet before someone with a holstered gun - but looking at the person holding the knife - can get off a shot.

Melee combat already exists in the game. I did it with my vanguard all the time, charge up, fire a point blank shot from my boomstick, and then belt them in the face until they fall down.

Might as well add some variety and options to it. Heck, if they add mods to guns again, you could just give your gun a "power axe" extension.

i actually want melee removed. i never use the B button because its linked to melee. id rather have B be used for another mappable ability. an important aspect of ME3 on the consoles is going to be controller config, and allowing for more hotkeys is the best thing they could do. i even think bioware should remove the Dpad functioning for squad mates and allow it to be used for abilities instead.

Yes, that's why I pictured how ME could have been better, at least for me. And that's why I'm really looking forwards Deus Ex Human Revolution, when it showed up, it was like a wish being true. Though it will never beat ME in RPG gameplay... well I think.

I say just change the melee animations around a bit. More than just that one rifle-butt animation.

Yes, that would be more than enough for ME3.

1. Play on the PC if you want more hotkeys
2. Melee is one of the best ways to kill a guy, locks them in place, does a lot of damage, conserves ammo, assassin's cloak + melee = rape, ect...
3. Play on the PC if you want more hotkeys

I'd like a bayonet. I never play biotic Sheps, but I imagine a fistfight with one would be quite a horrifying experience.
