Anyone who says "OLD SCHOOL RPGs ARE THE GREATEST!"....really has suffered cranial trauma at some point.

I am playing Baulder's Gate since I had it on gog.com and said "why not"
I will take Skyrim any day.

At least I dont die in a single hit, or run right into encounters I have no chance of winning.
Or have to waste hours being so weak as to die in a single hit.

So no I will just laugh at anyone who says that old school RPGs are better then modern ones.

It is not so much cranial trauma as it is the profound amazement that with over a decade of past experiences to guide them, some modern games like DA2 somehow somehow manage to set the genre backwards and are less enjoyable than their archaic predecessors.

All RPGs can, will, and do one-shot their players.  Take your mage to the ebony-bow wielding deathlord in Lost Valkygg without wearing any +10000% crafted legendary daedric armor and you'll see :D

I noticed he cited a D&D game for his reasoning. D&D punishes you if you don't understand the core rules. Those of us who grew up with the older RPGs tended to know D&D so didn't have too much trouble.

What I like about ES games is how they bring my favorite Ultima games forward a few decades. While the old games were certainly fun at the time, they were far simpler in every way imaginable. I'm really happy to have Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim (and the Fallout 3/NV games) to play nowadays.

I still play Baldur's Gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale 1/2 because their lore is well established and it's fun to revisit those old lands.

I couldn't have said it better.  Skyrim let's me play an elven assassin, my favorite character for BG, IWD, NWN and DAO.

12 cents per hour is pretty good if you've been having fun.

Oh yes I'm having fun. It's the closest I'll ever come to being a viking, without ending up in prison.

So you've not been thrown in jail for killing a guard who ran in front of you when trying to shoot a dragon in the face?

Currently just over 780 hours myself, might be slightly obsessed.

In other news I just discovered the Bandoleer mod and I think a couple of pouches will finish off my Breton vampire Morec's outfit perfectly.  Um, also, I've made a 19th character another Orc. I'll add a picture to my album thingy when I get a chance.

I like that mod.

I am currently sitting at around 60 mods.
I really want some more DLC though.

Hopefully Hearthfire is good.

I mean without ending up in prison in real life. Modern societies don't take kindly to people going a'viking these days.

I need to get a picture of my latest character, Hallbjorn. Straight up typical Nord hero. Heavy armor, two hander. Felt like it was time to get back to the basics.

I'll laugh at anyone who makes any such broad generalization, even if they say the opposite.  There were some really really *bad* RPGs back in the day, just as there are now.  But that said, you could have picked a better example and used a better argument.  First,  Baldur's Gate was awesome.  It was the perfect mix of tactical and challenge, open world and story-driven. And if it had come out today, it would have   probably generated the same critical acclaim and sales as Dragon Age Origins.  Second, most people  today applaud the  combat difficulty that you're criticizing.

In fact, that's one of the few very valid critic gripes about Skyrim.  A good open world sandbox *should*  have situations where if you wandered too far off you  could stumble on an encounter that you're not ready for and have no chance of winning.  But Skyrim doesn't have that.  Instead, it's got level scaling to  "protect" you from such risks.

I was writing an essay there for a bit.

But to sum up:
I DONT HATE BAULDER'S GATE.

Its challenging and unique compared to today's RPGs but I dont like its mechanics, or certain other aspects of it.
I much prefer a mana bar to so many casts a day.

I just find that early game its NOT VERY FUN.
Especially since my Paladin dies in one hit.

Dragons, Dragons everywhere...

It's almost like they knew I've been away for a long time and needed training. Can't go anywhere without them spoiling a peaceful stroll...or quick travel.

What the fruit loops! Has anyone been attacked by Talsgar The Wanderer ever since the latest update? I have not attacked him, pickpocketed, or used any type of spell on him, so what gives?

Do you have a bounty in the Hold you're encountering Talsgar in? In my experience, bounties seem to prompt Legionnaires, Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Vigilants of Stendarr, and Talsgar to attack you - but only in the Hold where you have one (and only during random encounters). Anywhere else, and they behave normally.

Yeah, i had a bounty in Whiterun but it was only 5 septims.

*edit*

I reloaded a save before i acquired the bounty(must of been a stray arrow), but thanks for the heads up.

Getting a 25 septim bounty on me in Winterhold was like the best thing ever. Continuall skill raises in both speech (for bribing guards) and pickpocketing (for retrieving bribe after)

Never caused anyone to actually attack me though because its so low. I just get the "Heeeey I know you..." line.

Honestly, and I say this as an AD&D nut, the early game even in the pen and paper version is a bit too harsh. You can die in one hit, and in particular mages are absolutely useless.

Luckily it gets better quickly. Baldur's Gate is the same.

I already knew this coming from a pen and paper background. My friend however did not. He just ran around and got killed a couple of times by easy enemies and gave up. I understand it, but it's just a shame he didn't dig a bit deeper and find out how awesome the game is once you learn how to survive.

In that sense BG is not a modern game. It doesn't hold your hand even at first and doesn't explain the rules.

I completely agree that Skyrim is missing the part where you really get in over your head. But on the other hand, I just see Skyrim as a massive sandbox. The point is to let you go anywhere and do anything at any time.  Personally I would have liked if some sections were too hard at first and you had to earn it, but I don't think everyone has the same idea about this.

You two clearly did not encounter a Frost Dragon with a level 6 character. Or jumped into Sightless Pit at the same level. Biggest mistake of my life.

Unless your game is modded, you won't encounter a frost dragon at level 6.
