Yes.  Quite a few of the kids in-game can be adopted if their parents are dead.

So I can kill people so that I can adopt their kids?

The inevitable question.

I think I will buy it mainly for RP reasons right now.

My Dragonborn is kind of getting up there in years, easily in his mid 50's if he fought in the GREAT WAR.
Might just be time to build a retirement home.

It seems he gets a happy ending.
A nice home to retire to.
A smoking hot bad ass warrior wife (Lydia)
AND CHEESE FOR EVERYONE!

I did not even have to blow up half the galaxy with the power of derp to do it.

Good news for you, Laser Beam (if it's true) - one of the new NPCs is a Redguard woman named Rayya, and apparently she can be married.

Combine that with stealing Braith from Amren and Saffir, and you've got yourself one big happy Redguard family.

Oh yeah thats right they have a redguard to be married now. Ah well think I'll bring one of the huskies from the Dawnguard to my home see if the kids want to keep it. Maybe an armored troll as well lulz.

Well, I got my first house built last night - Lakeview Manor in Falkreath. The area is pretty (trees!), but I discovered an awful bug last night. Oh, probably 6 times, in the form of hard system crashes. When I got in to work this morning, I looked it up, and the wiki says, "Possible massive system freeze in the Falkreath and Morthal house." That's the one.

Awesome. And that's the one house I have so far. I actually completed the house, and was nearly done furnishing it (of course, I had to buy EVERYTHING possible), and now when I enter through the front door, it locks up every time. Luckily, I'd built an Armory, which has second floor access, so I can get in that way ok, but it eventually still freezes if I stay too long.

For those of you wondering about what type of enemies will be knocking at your door, here is what I encountered last night, in about 5 hours of play (the house was completed in the last hour):
- Two dragons
- Wolves
- Skeevers in the cellar
- Frostbite spiders
- Dawnguard (even though I've finished the Vampire Lord main quest)
- One giant
- One necromancer

And...well, this wasn't an enemy, but I did find two dead bodies (one guy had a named fork, and the other was a dead Altmer), and a follower of Namira, who offered me first bite.

Once my house was mostly finished, I decided to adopt Runa from Honorhall Orphanage. I felt bad that she was the only girl, and the boys made her do all the chores. She's probably a master manipulator in disguise, heh. I'd already bought a yellow girl's dress from Bits and Pieces in Solitude, but need to see what else there is. I did see a doll, but I haven't really been seeking that stuff out.

Having the daughter lined up, I went to find my husband at Proudspire Manor. He was nowhere to be found. Unbeknownst to me, he'd already moved into the new house. I finally gave up and went there, to see, fought one dragon and the giant, and went inside. I was greeted by Sorex saying, "I don't know why you moved us out in the middle of nowhere, blah blah blah". Then he said he heard strange noises in the basement (skeevers). Might be time to get a steward, eh?

I wasn't sure how to get the land for the second house, so I went to Morthal, and had a guy walk up to me, and tell me he was my new housecarl. Huh? At the time, I didn't realize Morthal was where one of the houses could be, so I was a little confused.

I'm not gonna lie, I was expecting a more SIM-ish house-building experience, but it turned out cool enough. I obviously need to try one of the other houses instead, though, because the Falkreath house bug is awful. Everything was fine, until I got the third wing added, and was nearly done decorating.

And strangely enough, I found two dead treasure hunters in random places out in the wild last night. Coincidence?

I've had no problem with that bug thankfully. Saddly my stewards just keep my money when I want them to decorate stuff (so I don't have too) which is another bug. So I suspect a patch to be incoming soon. Hopefully. Saddly I bet with new options on who to marry, as I married Lydia.

I think I have the system freeze! Game crashed on me twice in my falkreath! Have not touched it since.

That would be the "Stewards may not actually furnish rooms when paid to." bug. *sigh* I know this is Bethesda and all, but come on!

Hmm I'm thinking of just keeping my family in Whiterun or moving them to solitude if I can really.

Yup, had that in Lakeview Manor. Only once though, so perhaps I'm due for several when I start today.

Wow, you've got a party house. All I've seen is a giant. (in 2 hours.) There's a conjurer on the north side of the cliff with his little circle of stones and various dead things, which I may have to deal with if Runa (adopted her as well) decides to go exploring.

Might be time to get a steward, eh?

My steward is Mercurio - and he's a giant ass. "Look what the horker dragged in!" he proclaims as I arrive home. How nice.

OMG, I'm such a ditz. I read on here yesterday that to get a steward, you just have to talk to them, and it's a dialogue option. Well, I tried that with Mjoll in Riften, and it didn't come up. It wasn't until later that I remembered (well, this morning) that the house guide said to bring a prospective steward to the house, to see if they're a good fit. /facepalm

I either need:
1). More coffee
2). More sleep

I never got the option with Serana, so I guess she can't be a steward. Pity.

@Shepenwepet - yeah, Marcurio is kind of an arse. Somehow that doesn't surprise me that he'd say something like that. And yay for Runa! I kept meaning to see if I could adopt Aventus Aretino, but never made it back to Windhelm. The one time i went there last night, the blacksmith had 40 iron ingots, which came in super handy, considering you need a gazillion of them. Distracted by the ingots, I went back to the new house.

So I'm wondering, then...since I got a housecarl for the house in Morthal for being Thane, do I/we only get to choose two stewards, then?

Dumb question: why does one need 500+ Iron ingots to build a house? Is the house made of Iron? Wouldn't it have made more sense to raid a mill and steal its lumber instead?

Hell, if they're gonna ask us to gather metal ingots  to build a house, then they should give us a choice.  I'd so love to make  a house out of Ebony.  Imagine, a Big shiny black house, made of the strongest metal in Skyrim

It's mostly for the stuff inside the house. For every piece of furniture or decoration you craft, you need iron fittings, or iron hinges, or a lock, or nails, or a mixture of those mentioned. Also, by working on the house and furnishings, it increases your smithing skill.

You'll also need glass and straw, which you'll have to buy in a shop. Each build site comes with a rock quarry and an area to dig up clay. In addition to iron ingots, you'll also need corundum ingots, though not as many. Some of the specialized stuff, like enchanting and alchemy tables require other stuff, like gold or malachite ingots. Shrines require amulets, plus orichalcum, and whatever else. Really, there's a whole lot of stuff you'll need, if you choose to go all-out.

Sadly, you don't get to choose the look of the structure itself. I wish I could have had bigger windows...but I really like the Alchemy tower. The perch at the top is cool. I assume the other towers have the same round deck at the top.

Well, you start with a basic one-room house. From that, you can add on a Main Hall, plus three wings. You build one at a time, so each part has to be completed before you start building a new one. The three wings allow you a choice of 3 things you can build.

The main hall includes a second floor with two bedrooms, and two staircases, and the first floor is pretty sizeable, with a large table/chairs, and a fireplace. There is also a cellar you can build that is directly below the main hall.

The East Wing, for instance, will allow you to build an Armory, Kitchen, OR Library Tower.
The West Wing allows you to build (additional) Bedroom, Greenhouse, or Enchanting Tower.
The North Side allows you to build a Trophy Room, Storage Room, or Alchemy Tower.

On top of that, before you even get to the stuff inside the house, you can build a stable, tanning rack, smelter, aviary, garden, etc. outside.

The view from the Falkreath house is pretty cool. It overlooks Lake Illinata.

Do you get to choose the type of beds you place in the bedrooms?

Nope, not at all. The decorations/furniture and locations of each are set for each room. So in the main hall, the two bedrooms contain one master bedroom (double bed), and one kids room (two small beds). If you do the extra Bedroom expansion, it's another master bedroom.

You don't get to pick where anything goes, or what color it is, or anything. You merely get to choose what pieces you want. I think they did a pretty good job with placement, but if you buy everything, it's almost cluttered, really. Way more storage than you could ever need (or keep track of). A decked-out Armory is ridiculous. 5 mannequins? Really? Plus at least one more in the main hall? I'm not opening a clothes store!

Oh, I almost forgot. You'll have to visit a lumber mill to buy wood. It costs $200 for 20 pieces. I think I bought just over 200 for the first house, and that was just about right. The nearest mill was Half-Moon mill, but since I'd killed both Hern and Hert, I had to go to a different mill to buy lumber.

If you get a Housecarl in they can buy Stone, clay and Lumber. It gets added right away so it stops trips to the mills at least

^ Oh yes, that's right. I haven't gotten a steward yet. That will be my first priority when I get home tonight. Especially after the plethora of bestiary that's been visiting our humble abode. Clearly my vampire shopkeeper husband and daughter could use some help.

I opted to build a greenhouse, in addition to the outside garden. It's like a creepy haunted house in there, with all the canis root. Image IPB

What about Spouse AI. Is it the same as it is in the vanilla homes?   (ie.  Use cooking pot.  then walk to the nearest chair and eat bread, then walk to the alchemy table and pretend to work, then walk back to the chair etc.) Or do they actually walk around to the house's other wings and do gardening and stuff?

And do they chat with the kids?

ohhh I like the sound of that!    I was wondering how to style the homes for a Vampire character to make it fit their alternative lifestyle.  A nice kitchen with pretty decor, a bard with a lute and a couple of kids running around playing really doesnt fit does it

^_^
