Makes sense since she's Skyrim's dumbest Jarl.

It contains massive amounts of what someone else called "Scenery Porn". It has some of the most gorgeous environments you'll ever see.

It's very immersive. The HUD appears and dissappears depending on your actions. It's essentially gone if you don't do anything involving combat or running around.

It's HUGE.

On the downside, quests have a large amount of "Run into a dungeon and collect a plot item" vibe to them. Fortunately, the dungeons are still entertaining.

You get to fight dragons.

Mod it up.  I'd probably try things without mods for a bit but there really are a lot of great mods both big and small. If you've got a machine powerful enough, mess around with the ENB series mod which can make the game look stunning.

My enjoyment of Skyrim mostly comes from how atmospheric it is. Like most other Bethesda games, it just creates a giant world to just explore. Except I think its actually a visually interesting world to explore unlike Oblivion. That's what I love about Skyrim- its all unified under the geographic notion that its the kind of generic cold, northern part of Tamriel, but Bethesda did a fantastic job in providing tons of diversity in the different subclimates and regions while still having them blend together really well. It reminds me a lot of Alaska or Yellowstone area in that regard.

In many ways, its a more refined and polished Oblivion than it is Morrowind. But its(IMO) far, far superior to Oblivion. The world is just vastly more interesting. Why did you not enjoy Oblivion while you enjoyed Morrowind?

And kill some Thalmor. Thats fun.:wizard:

Yes, I'm usually not a huge fan of dungeons when they're just caves but the dungeons in Skyrim are pretty amazing and diverse. Yes, there are a lot of same-ish Draugr crypts but pretty much every dungeon can be walked away from with at least one unique memorable aspect.

Well, regarding dungeons, there are literally hundreds, and each is unique and interesting enough you won't complain. Each tells a story. Dwemer ruins are especially immersive and fun to grind through.

You want a good reason to play Skyrim besides being Dragonborn and fighting Dragons (Semi-Spoiler-ish):

+A dramatically improved levelling system
+A useful and interesting perk system
+Smithing that will keep you at the forge for hours (and you will want to be there!)
+The entire crafting system (Alchemy is more powerful than you will initially think--and I was never a fan of it until Skyrim); you can forego it completely if its not your thing as well.
+Loot as drool worthy as you would expect from Bethesda
+A deep and meaningful Inventory
+Scenery Porn like no one else can do
+Blackreach
+Exploration that will engage you for hundreds of hours
+Badass Dragon Priests
+Deathlords
+Draugr Crypts
+Dawnbreaker
+Shield Charge
+A player modding effort that will require a 12-step program once engaged
+Despite the best efforts of elitists to paint it otherwise, a very compelling story line (that you can enter and withdraw from as you please)
+Fantastic kill scenes and finishers
+Shouts
+One-hitting Giants
+Mammoths
+5 quality player homes
+Living cities

...but most of all, FREEDOM!

I'm sure others can think of more.

Unlike some games which shall not be named, these fetch quests are actually interesting because all the dungeons have their own individual story about them which makes each of them feel different, even if you are basically doing the same thing.

All the little stories in the game (and there are some good ones) make the game something beyond it's main plot.

Skyrim isn't perfect and it has it issues like all games, but don't let Oblivion scare you away: the god awful leveling system is gone, the substandard graphics have been replaced by beautiful vistas and landscapes, and you've got a lot more freedom to customize the type of character (mechanically speaking) you want to play.

I'll speak in general,  emotion-appeal  terms, instead of  just listing a bunch of specific tangeable things that prove nothing.

The game *feels*  Morrowindish, even if it's so deliberately  different.  It's hard to describe.

And if I can predict the future here...  I think a new standard or  bar has been set.  6 or 8 years from now  No one will mention Oblivion in their comparison statements anymore.    Instead, we'll be looking at the new Elder scrolls  and  stacking it up against either Skyrim or Morrowind.

But I digress.   the above  constitutes short changing a game that does not deserve to be short changed!  Skyrim is better than Morrowind.  There. I said it.  Strip away the Nostalgia now,  people, and see things as they really are.  Morrowind had a long list of annoying features  and  terribly short-sighted implementations  that people have forgotten about  over the years  (read: combat mechanics) that Skyrim does not.   Skyrim also benefits from the good aspects of gaming evolution and modernization.  The game is, visually, far more beautiful and has far more diverse and varied settings, dungeons and environments.   And there's a lot more voice acting.  You put these things together and the result is that you get an experience that's  just....better.

From what I have heard reported, while MW may have had a better storyline for some, the game mechanics of Skyrim exceed all previous TES titles making it much more enjoyable to play.

* 3rd person is entirely viable, while 1st person viewing is still quite helpful.
* Crafting, Eating, Resting, etc are all included, and are optional.
* Few restrictions on CC.
* Several races; each has a uniqueness to them.
* Detailed landscapes that give breath to each different area.

Now for myself, playing a stealthy Archer has never been so much fun. And like a couple of other favorite games (NWN1, DAO), I am still discovering new content after more than a thousand hours. That speaks to the quality of design to me.

I can't speak to the quality of Morrowind or Oblivion, but Skyrim is a glorious game. Moreover Skyrim is a vast, overwhelmingly beautiful, infinitely interesting world, full of compelling quests, characters and creatures. Game has me by the throat....in a good way mind. Let us know how you get on in the event you pick this one up Allan, I for one would love to hear your thoughts.

Part of the problem is I'm kind of biding my time until XCOM comes out and am hesitant to pick anything up before then.

Aye, Skyrim really is a game that demands a significant investment of time. Pity.

Does anyone at all go through content mods of this game? It is getting bothersome how every! single! freakin! gaming mag, website and whathave you lists the same " Top 10 skyrim mods!!!" and virtually without exception at least 8 out of 10 in these listing consists of same " improved fauna!!!" " glowing ore veins!!!" - bs time after time. I'm sure it's cool and all to make nightsky and foliage look slightly better but please.

Has anyone seen a site, listing, essay, anything dedicated to introducing or even reviewing Skyrim's CONTENT mods? You know, stuff that actually adds stuff. Dungeons. Quests. Stories.  Adventures.

Skyrim is epic because it never holds your hand, never drives you down certain paths (that often), and it allows for so much freedom.

I mean take the quest "Blood on the Ice"
Its actually a very fun investigation but one you can also screw up.

But really the freedom is that I can play everything from a noble hero, to a horrible monster.
Its a very fun game, and easily worth whatever its asked for at a store.

That's so funny - in my playthroughs, they were in Dawnstar about 95% of the time. I think in my very last DG playthrough, I did get one turn in Riften, but the rest...of course, were in Dawnstar. They really seem to like Jarl Skald.

About a week ago, I loaded an earlier character I'd made that had gone through Dawnguard (Minya, my Redguard), to build her a house ala Hearthfire...and I couldn't find my stupid Rune Hammer! I tore each of my houses apart looking for that stupid thing, and never did find it. Exasperating.

You know there is one thing to count against Skyrim.

Late game its a bit to easy.
My main is a tank so I can literally laugh off any damage done.

Combat loses a bit of the thrill when you dont fear defeat anymore.

I couldn't get into Oblivion at all - never made it past the opening Dungeon. Skyrim, however, really hooked me. I haven't played in a while, I need to get back into it.

The Gamespot Top 5 Mod vids offered more quest content than others, IMO. Of course, I have not added these types of mods myself, so I am unable to say how well written they may actually be as compared to the vanilla game. See youtube for specifics.

For me, I actually prefer the mods that augment the game already being played, so Gophervids mod recommendations and playthrough vids are better for me. These are available on both the Nexus and youtube.

That was true of Oblivion, too.  I think the most challenge I had on the late quests was to keep the NPCs from turning on me for friendly fire, or that speed challenge in the Bruma Oblivion gate.

I don't care what anyone says, both Oblivion and Skyrim are great games.  Oblivion had longer and more involved guild quest lines- Skyrim relies too much on the radiant quests to fill these out- but Skyrim improved on mechanics across the board, and the world is more detailed and livelier.  Especially with mods like Real Wildlife and Radiance.  Morrowind I tried to play, but sadly these days both Oblivion and Morrowind give me migraines.  Something about the low-light dungeons and landscapes loading as you approach.  From what I played, I can see what everyone says about the tedious mechanics in MW.

I don't do quest mods much- in my experience these are very buggy.

I miss how in Oblivion/Morrowwind that if you cap or surpass the spd/agl stats that your pc will do some fantastical stuff like running or jumping the whole of Cyrodil in minutes.

Oblivion was fun, but I didn't like Cyrodill as a setting. Too bland.

Morrowind and Skyrim have more character and are, imo, much more interesting.

As gameplay mechanics go, Skyrim is the best to date. Also, having every cave, dungeon or ruin actually provide you with some objective, as opposed to get in, kill everything and loot the bodies, was a nice surprise. It actually made faction quests and side quests more interesting than the Civil War quest line.
