Vampires pester me until I finish the quest. One encounter had a group dressed up as vigilants.

Did anyone else encounter a problem with the quests you get from the Companions?

Farkas asked me to kill a bandit leader at some tower, but I already killed the guy a few days ago and now my quest log won't update to reflect the fact he's dead. Is there some way around this issue?

Also, similar thing happens with Vampire quests in Dawnguard where you get asked to turn an innkeeper in Winterhold into a vampire, despite having done so already.

The bandits will eventually respawn so you may get lucky. As for stupid Vingalmo, the only solution is to kill the person you already infected.

Do you have a save file going back to before you entered Castle Volkihar and turned in another quest for him or one of the other bloodsuckers? If so, reload it and enter the castle - when you turn in the previous quest you did and speak to Vingalmo, he may give you a different quest or have you turn a new target.

It is imperative that you do this BEFORE turning in whatever previous quest you had and BEFORE you enter the castle - otherwise, the quest he'll give you will be "locked in" and you'll be forced to use blaidfiste's solution. If he gives you the same quest and target anyway, you can try reloading to that prior save I mentioned until you do get different one.

Anyway... now I'm just starting to get downright angry. I've intentionally been entering cities at night strolling past stables during the day, and making numerous indirect efforts to expose myself to vampire and death hound attacks, but I get nothing. Guards are talking about vampire attacks, but there are none actually happening - this must be some f***ing bug or something exclusive to me. I am most displeased.

Thank you both for your advice.

I'll try waiting a bit to see if the bandits respawn.

Well, there may be another solution.

Sometimes, during the night, you may chance upon a vampire walking around major cities dressed as a traveller (usually in priest or mage robes). If you try talking to him, he'll attack you. Though, between the guards and the locals, he won't last very long.

IIRC, the "Traveler" is an assassin sent to take you out after you join the Dawnguard - I've never seen him outside of that. Vampires will often appear both in towns and out on the roads and try to assassinate you if you side with the Dawnguard, often in a small group.

Either way, for RP reasons I won't be joining the Dawnguard until my character is convinced that Durak wasn't just blowing smoke - wiping out two small vampire lairs and helping some Vigilants kill a single fleeing vampire don't really make much of a case for this so-called "vampire threat" in my Dovahkiin's eyes.

A vampire attack or two, however, might change his mind - knowing my luck though, I will go through the entire game and never witness a single attack. -_-

Illusion mage is now my favorite kind of mage- it's like 'what dastardly mayhem should I pull this time.'

I agree, Illusion magic is a lot of fun. That one guy at the College of Winterhold is right about it being the most underappreciated school of magic, because it's just downright awesome - especially if you're playing a thief/assassin/vampire character (or all three). I love to just sneak up on bandits and drop a Fury/Frenzy on top of one or more of them, watch them tear each other apart, then Calm the last one standing and slit their throat. It's quite devious.

Also, still no vampire or death hound attacks - anyone want to trade their "too many vampire attacks" for my "no vampire attacks"? Because I'm getting pretty desperate over here.

Either way, I might just end up forsaking this broken mechanic and RPing my character simply growing "concerned" after helping Vigilants kill three rogue vampires, clearing out Bloodlet Throne, Haemar's Shame, and Cronvangr Cave, and witnessing the smoldering remains of the Hall of the Vigilant - then I suppose he'll mosy on over to Fort Dawnguard when he gets the chance to inquire about the whole situation.

Has anyone ever managed to get Repairing the Phial to trigger? I've done a few games now where I complete The White Phial and The Throat of the World (and beyond), but Quintus never sends me a letter and the quest never triggers.

Just one of the many broken mechanics in this otherwise amazing game - it's really starting wear on my nerves a bit, though. Bethesda really ought to get to fixing some of this stuff in their patches.

^I have gotten it to trigger, but it was bugged and I couldn't complete it. One of the ingredients you need is a briar heart, and the quest marker was pointing to a place I'd already cleared out. I actually had two briar hearts in my inventory, but they didn't seem to count.

I think that bug has been fixed, though, as when I loaded up my game after getting hearthfire, the quest updated. it also forcibly shoved me into a bookcase storage menu. (I was in the wilderness.) I'm guessing there had been issues with bookcases?

I started a new playthrough, I haven't been playing much, but I know the last thing I did was complete throat of the world, (and I've done the white phial.) I don't recall getting any letter either.

It's amusing how peoples' games play out so differently from one person to the next - I have not once had a playthrough where Blood on the Ice failed to trigger, but for other people that's been a serious problem. Skyrim is an interesting game, indeed.

I get White Phial every now and then but Falk Firebeard stopped sending me his letter to kill Potema.

I had an interesting encounter with a dragon yesterday on my way to the Forsaken Cave BTW - a dragon appeared and fought with a Giant and an Ice Wraith. Usually when a dragon is fighting with other creatures, I'm next in line for a blast of Ice or Fire Breath - but this dragon seemed to ignore both me and Anneke (my companion at the time) completely. I even walked up to it at one point when it was on the ground, and it simply looked at me for a brief moment before taking off over the mountains.

Then I began to think of all the dragons I encounter who simply fly overhead and don't disturb me or even any of the creatures nearby unless they are attacked first, and wondered if perhaps dragons did this by design and not because of a bug in the AI (which is what I'd originally thought) - perhaps to further demonstrate that not all dragons are interested in Alduin's agenda or the enslavement/destruction of mortals. Some may just wish to live free.

If so, it's all the more reason to spit in Delphine and Esbern's faces.

The dragons are beautiful and I don't like having to kill so many. The Blades can definitely step off.

I have a similar dilemma in thinking about giants. I don't want to kill them- a lot of them seem to mind their own business and I find them eerie and kind of cool. However you do see quite a few quests where giants are attacking travelers or settlements.

Dragons just flying is not a bug. It's actually one of the more intelligently designed and immersive "encounters." Not everything in the game world should be looking to eat, rob, or murder the PC at every time..

LOL. I wish someone had told the wolves, bears, and trolls in The Rift that. -_-

Speaking of trolls actually, I did have a troll do something very similar to the dragon - it got into it with two Spriggans out on the roads in Haafingar, then once Barbas and I took care of the Spriggans, the troll simply glanced at us for a minute, then clambered off into the hills.

Now if he could just head over to The Rift and teach his friends to do the very same.

I ran into this problem with my second character. I had cleared out the Forsworn area where you are supposed to get the Briar-Heart (which has always been Red Eagle Redoubt for me) and I never encountered the courier to trigger the quest. For the PS3, the patch lead to this area (and some other Forsworn areas) not re-populating with Forsworn enemies once it's been cleared by the Dragonborn, so I imagine this is the problem. I'm not certain if the PC and X-Box have the same problem.

Liberal application of Calm and/or Kyne's Peace shout helps with trips to the Rift.  It's rather cute when a bear is about to eat you, you whack it with green goo, and it lies down and puts its paws over its nose to go to sleep.  Awww.

I love how the Dawnguard recruits go back to sleep after Isran's speech.

Aye, I used Calm on a Cave Bear on the way to Largashbur - I needed to get there quick to keep a giant from slaughtering everyone and didn't have time to ****** around with a bear

On the other hand, I had a surplus of empty Petty and Lesser soul gems - something the wolves and trolls who relentlessly assaulted me on the way to Riften found new homes in. I should be able to bump my Enchantment skill past 60 now thanks to their generous contributions.
