The Thalmor claim they instigated the civil war, doesn't mean they actually did. Anti-imperial unrest was building up in Skyrim even before the Talos ban.  I think Beth was telegraphing the breakup of the empire already in Morrowind, when Wulf says "maybe it's time for something different," and then of course with the end of the Septim line.

Ah, then that's something I was unaware of. I haven't played the earlier Elder Scrolls games -- I have Oblivion for the PS3, but I couldn't take it seriously because of what the people looked like and ended up stopping early on -- so I'm unaware of any details that might've been present in the previous four games.

Wulf was apparently an avatar of Talos.  I haven't played Morrowind myself, but have heard about him and seen the screenshots of his dialogue... actually he's in this video at 11:00, if you can stand the dork doing the voiceover (why do people like let's play videos?  I'll never know).  I tried to play this year, but like Oblivion now does, MW gives me migraines.  Even watching that video makes me woozy.

Yup. Wulf is an aspect of Tiber Septim/ Talos if you want to believe Lalatia Varian from the Imperial Cult and add the fact that he gives you his "lucky coin" which blesses you with the "Luck of the Emperor" even if you discard the coin.

His dialogue regarding "trying something new" and "the Empire is getting old" goes like this btw:

"The Emperor is getting old. Don't know how much longer he'll hang on. So is the whole Empire, for that matter. Getting old, that is. The Emperor and the legions have held the Empire together for hundreds of years. It's been a good thing, by and large. But maybe it's time for a change. Time for something young and new. What? No idea. Because I'm old. Old dog doesn't get new ideas. But maybe young folks like you should try some new ideas. I  don't know. Could be messy. But change is never pretty."

Haplose, Yrkoon and Addai67. You have my thanks for your replies.

Yrkoon wrote...They mostly just debate whether Skyrim is  better than Morrowind.

I have heard that from a number of people. What was so good about Morrowind?

Well, mainly two things, I guess. The fact that it is not a generic high fantasy setting - but rather a unique land, with unique landscapes, architecture, politics, religion, culture and traditions. The intrigueing art direction that reflects this (though humanoids were rather ugly... not that they were much better in Oblivion).

And the complete freedom this game offered. You could Levitate to reach any place you desire... cities were part of the worldspace... run as fast as the wind... Jump for miles at a time... enchant ridiculous equipment and make overpowering spells... Even though there was no fast travel, eventually you could cover the land very fast, if you so desired - which felt much more immersive.

It also did not feauture the dreaded levelled enemies from Oblivion, so the mechanics and levelling wasn't pointless, even if overly convoluted (Skyrim has levelled enemies also, but handled much better, with level & equipment brackets).

you could actually wear clothing under armour like a civilised person. there were attributes. Argonian and Khajiit had unique legs and animations. (Argonians swim like a baws) Fargoth. Cosades. Mister Curio. Racist dunmer. Racial recognition, fighting factions and houses, building strongholds and countless other things that I think no doubt made it better than Skyrim for its time

Man I really hate the spam bots on this forum.

So tomorrow we get the trailer and get to see what all the fuss is really about for the next DLC.
I really hope we get to go to High Rock in the next DLC, or game though.

@Mad Hanar:

There are 3 ways you can play Skyrim, depending on what kind of experience you seek.

1: Explorer:
Just play as yourself. Your character is your avatar, an extension of yourself. Explore the world and choose whatever you want to do. Play the kind of character YOU want to be!

2: Power Player:
You're a hardcore gamer and like a challenge. Set the difficulty to 'Master' and try to become the most over-powered warrior/thief/mage possible! If you like to focus on min-maxing and getting the best gear for your character, play like this. It does get boring after a while though, even on 'Master'.

3: Role Player:
Basically like Dungeons and Dragons. Make up a fun character in your head, try to create him in the character creator and then play as your character in Skyrim. Only do the quests your character would do. Only talk to the people your character would talk to. Really try to stay true to the concept of your character. If your character is a Woof-elf Thief, he has no business with the Companions. If your character is an Orc Warrior, he has no reason to join the College of Winterhold. If you're playing a holy paladin, you probably shouldn't join the Dark Brotherhood, etc. etc. etc.
Personally I do think "roleplaying" in Skyrim is a bit one-sided though. Skyrim doesn't give much options to truly roleplay and really, whether you're a paladin mage or a necromancer thief, it really doesn't have an influence on the world around you. The world of Skyrim never truly acknowledged your decisions nor does it give much consequences or feedback on your decisions. However, if you play on PC, there are mods to enhance your experience with Skyrim and gives you some extra options to express and roleplay your character.

Thanks for your replies guys, I really appriciate it. It seems like role playing is the type of experience for me, but I do have a few questions. Is speech as important an attribute as it is in other RPGs? Will I need to have it in the upper 80s+ to get places in the game? I also heard that crafting is the most important skill, is that true? Can I really go through the game just using destruction magic? It seems rather difficult. One last thing, is it easy to get the "FUS RO DAH" in the early stages of the game, or is it something unlocked later?

Mehrunes razor is one of the best weapons in the game. That is all.

No. Speech is pretty useless. Don't invest any points in there unless you want to roleplay a character with fantastic speech skills or something like that. Even then, it's a waste of perks if you ask me. The only new thing speechcraft adds is the ability to invest in stores. What it does is that it permanently increases the amount of money that stores will have when you visit them. Kind of f*cking useless if you ask me.

I also heard that crafting is the most important skill, is that true?

If you want the best weapons and armor in the game, than yes. Other than that it's not that important. You can perfectly play a character without crafting and still be a strong and capable character, even on 'Master' difficulty.

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Yes, you can get FUS RO DAH really quickly if you follow the main quest.

Destruction magic is incredibly underpowered to the point of being near useless. If you feel like taking it as a skill, I recommend only doing it with a Necromage Vampire and also limiting it to fire spells. Take the Aspect of Terror perk first, the Necromage perk second, then become a vampire... in that order. Then take both levels of Augmented Flames and Intense Flames. Also take Dual Casting and Impact. Fireball and Incinerate (the only two spells you'll want) will then be somewhat decent.

Otherwise, just skip Destruction and take Archery for your long distance combat needs. You might also take some poisons along - if you're good at Alchemy, the recipe for what I consider to be the strongest poison in the game is Imp Stool, Human Flesh, and Mora Tapinella. Coat an arrow or bolt in that, and your enemies will drop like flies.

Good luck.

EDIT: If you have Dawnguard, Human Flesh is far more plentiful - all werewolves drop it and there's a ton of it in the Castle Volkihar, err, dining room. Otherwise you will find it somewhat troublesome to obtain. Also, save it only for boss level enemies like Bandit Chiefs and Falmer Shadowmasters - if you use it on every enemy you come across, you will find yourself running out of poison quickly.

Companion Vilja has been released for Skyrim. If you ever had to play with only one mod, it should be Vilja.

For those interested, I have updated my mod list/guide.

That voice of her would get on my nerves after only a couple of minutes. Most certainly not a mod for me.

Funny, because her accent is from a Northern country, fits Skyrim ^^. But I understand what you mean. I find it quite nice, but I'm not a native speaker, so accents don't get on my nerves.

I agree, the voice acting is... not very good, and the recording quality is pretty shabby as well (as is the case with most mods with voice acting). It clashes with the rest of the voice acting which was recorded in a studio with professional voice actors.

I might just be being a nitpicky, ungrateful ass, but that's just how I see it. :/

It's not her accent of her even her voice itself that really annoys me. What really annoys me is her tone. She sounds really whiny. When she speaks I kept thinking: "STOP WHINING!"

I'll be content to just know what is going on there.  The almost complete silence about it is weird.  Maybe that was a signal they were planning something big for it.

I like the voice from Vilja's mod myself, but voiced mods definitely give you an appreciation for voice actors.  It's not as easy as it seems to be.

I knew Emma was going to make a Vilja mod for Skyrim. She was my favorite modded companion in Oblivion. Vilja was one of the few follower mods on the Nexus that didn't pacifically cater to those with bizzare sexual fetishes.

According to the letters you can find in Thalmor Embassy, they orchestrated the whole Markath incident which led to the creation of the Stormcloaks and started the civil war in Skyrim. Sure, unrest was present long before that, but Thalmor made sure it erupted into a full blown rebellion.

The documents from the embasy also reveal that Ulfric was, uknown to him, a Thalmor pawn ever since they captured him during the Great War. The Thalmor basically want to maintain a stalemate between the Imperials and Stormcloaks in Skyrim, so as to weaken the province, and the Empire as a whole.

Like I said- they claim to have instigated it. Whether they actually did or are taking credit after the fact (they have a tendency to step in and do that, see fall of Crystal Like Law and the moons returning) isn't known to us. Very important in TES settings to not take any document at face value, without considering its source and what hands it passed through.

While we're talking about good follower mods: Valfar

That guy is the most badass mofo you can get as a follower. Basically a must have for Stormcloaks B) Additionally I'm in love with his armor!

So you know...I honestly wonder if the next DLC is going to even MENTION how much of a badass you are.

In Dawnguard its kind of silly hearing people ask why they should let you join their club.
When you have probably killed a few hundred people, dragons, undead, constructs, and monsters by yourself.

I mean I would be happy if you could say:
"So beating Alduin, being the Harbinger, Archmage, Master Thief, Master Assassin, Bard, War Hero, and/or top warrior in the land is not enough?"

I mean seriously people in and around Skyrim must really be dumb if they never take notice of the walking demi-God
