In Skyrim you are not evil...just incredibly goal driven and self interested

Has anyone in here created a character that's inspired from a fantasy series? Kalam Mekhar from Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of The Fallen(shameless advertisement) has inspired me to do such, as his badassery leaves me giddy like a Korean schoolboy who's about to receive an autograph from PSY.

Here's an example as empty praises won't do.

Spoiler

Yeah i kinda OD'd with the length of the example, but what say you?

My favorite way to play these games is to rise a hero then fall into depravity. It's rather fun.

^My playstyle is exactly the opposite. I start off in the gutter. I do anything, kill anything, ally with anyone to survive and get ahead. Then later on, when I become more powerful, I tend to grow a conscience, and become much more selective with regards to the quests I accept, the entities I deal with, and the foes I  choose to unleash my power on.

Well happy daiz I can actually give you some advise for dual wielding. Alright First off get the perk to up speed of your dual attacks. Max it. Also stick with swords if your going to dual wield. They are faster so that speed makes up for the lowest damage. Max the 20% more damage perk, really helps if your gonna use swords. Then finally sneak/light armor will be your best friends. I take Dragaur Deathlords down in a few hits by holding down right and left trigger so this kins of character is really really strong. And I also have a bosmer, easily my favorite race in game :D

Oh yeah I get that. I meant the actual green bar of stamina. I thought maybe you were using it for stealth rolls and such. I seem to have enough at 200.

Carrying capacity... well, no, can't have enough of that :)

Unless I'm playing a mage, I always put all my points into Stamina, never into Health.

It's great to have a pool of about 400-500 Stamina as an archer to use Eagle Eyes with Steady Hands - you can wipe out a crowd of advancing enemies before they even get close to you. Or as a melee character, you need it so you can run up to spell casters or archers and powerbash to interrupt them.

Yeah, I did the same - and have mostly had to stop using dual wield because everything in the game dies so quickly when hit with a couple of well made flame/consume swords.

^ Seriously? Swords are that great for dual wielding? I wasn't even imagining taking out Draugr Deathlords like that, but I'm looking forward to it now. Thanks for the tips, guys; I'll continue on this path, and will apply the perks accordingly.

I was actually going to use heavy armor on this girl, but I guess light makes sense, and it's early enough to switch (my Bosmer is only level 5 or 6). I just wish I had more light armor choices. And I was just beginning to not hate the iron armor. Ahh well, Thieves Guild, here I come.

Sadly, that's a lot of the reason I usually join the TG: for the armor. Well...and for all the boys I don't get to marry or flirt with. Posted Image

^ Hooray! I'm always down for more armor choices. I should add, I don't mind the Dawnguard  armor. Guildmaster is my favorite light armor, though.

I wish the DB armor was better looking. It reminds me of some kind of weird spandex pajamas. And it looks really creepy on Cicero.

I've been analyzing the trailer quite a bit lately as you can imagine, and I've written down some more musings you might all be interested in. Brace yourself, though: this will be a long post with a lot of screenshots. Take your time reading it and looking over the screenshots if you have to - there's no hurry.

Now, I see a lot of people both here and on the Beth forums think the first Dragonborn is Konahrik, since he is the only named Dragon Priest absent from the vanilla game and only his mask can be found. The Dragon Priest shrine is also shown in the trailer, as is a Dragon Priest who has no mask... and is assumed by some to be the Dragonborn Priest the Skaal elder is talking about.

The problem with that is that the first Dragonborn (Miraak I shall call him henceforth) already *has* a Dragon Priest mask of his own, and it is already shown in the trailer. At the end, it shows Miraak devouring the souls of three dragons - I'd seen that part a hundred times, but I noticed a few new details the last time I watched it - both the armor and the mask he is wearing are indeed those of a Dragon Priest, or are at least a variation of them. Here is Miraak:

Posted Image

And here is Volsung, one of the Dragon Priests in the vanilla game:

Posted Image

Notice the "dragon heads" on the shoulder pauldrons on both Miraak and Volsung, and notice also the "spiky" plating below the "dragon heads" and on the gauntlets - these are nearly identical to what Dragon Priests wear in the vanilla game.

More importantly, however, is the mask itself - at first glance, Miraak's mask and Volsung's look nothing alike... until you look at the "eyes" of the masks and realize that they are exactly alike in design. This means that the mask and armor are at least based on traditional Dragon Priest garb, and may have even been modified from Miraak's original armor. We know then that he is definitely a unique Dragon Priest, and has his own unique mask (which we will likely acquire for ourselves). He is not Konahrik.

I also noticed other NPCs wearing similar apparel throughout the trailer - these are clearly devotees to Miraak, and they appear to be hostile to the player character as he is seen killing two of them. I managed to snap a great screencap of one of these devotees:

Posted Image

Both these devotees and Miraak himself appear to be aligned with Hermaeus Mora, and their apparel reflects that with the "tentacled" masks and Miraak's presence in Apocrypha. Miraak is a follower of Herma-Mora, the Daedric Prince of Knowledge and the "ancient Atmoran demon" who Ysgramor is said to have fought against many times. The nature of this relationship remains to be seen, but it may be that Miraak discovered his powers as Dragonborn through Herma-Mora (or may have even been granted them by Herma-Mora for all we know), and was tempted with great power and/or knowledge should he betray the Dragon Cult and serve the Daedric Lord instead.

I also notice these Herma-Mora priests (I'll call them that from now on) are constructing some kind of odd structures around the Standing Stones of Solstheim (which are connected to "The Greedy Man" of Skaal legend, who is an aspect of "The Adversary" and "Thartaag the World-Devourer" who is clearly Alduin). Take a look at this screenshot and see:

Posted Image

The person on the far right is clearly a HM priest. I don't know how, but the Standing Stones are important to the Herma-Mora cult, and may even be key to Miraak's return, which could mean he is connected to, or may even be "The Greedy Man" as I mentioned previously in the Skyrim thread. And as the Standing Stones are connected to "The Greedy Man" who is a villain in Skaal legend, it makes sense the Skaal themselves would be strongly opposed to the Herma-Mora cultists attempting to bring Miraak/The Greedy Man back - which is why they're seen sabotaging the structures the HM priests are building around the Stones:

Posted Image

These are clearly not HM priests, and their armor looks much like a set of armor the player character can be seen wearing in the trailer:

Posted Image

The Skaal wore similar armor in Morrowind, which was called Nordic Mail - which was also discovered in the data files for Dragonborn from Patch 1.8. So those people are definitely Skaal, and I have a strong hunch that the player will be joining them in their mission to sabotage these bizarre structures.

But I *also* noticed the player wearing armor similar to what the HM priests were wearing on a few occasions. Take a look:

Posted Image

The "spiky" plating is there as well as similar stitching and coloration like we see in the screenshot I posted of one of these HM priests earlier. This tells me we may also be able to side with the HM cult and help them bring Miraak back while defending against the Skaal. A mission for the Skaal might involve destroying the structures the HM priests built around the Standing Stones, and a mission for the HM cult might involve defending the structures from the Skaal.

No matter what, this will definitely be an interesting DLC - and it looks like it will be a big one too. Solstheim was a big place in Morrowind and will likely be even bigger in Skyrim, and we may even get to visit parts of Morrowind as I've previously pointed out. I really can't wait to find out how much of what I've observed is right (if any) and also see what surprises lie in store. December 4th can't come soon enough! :D

Stahlrim was a sacred material for the Skaal, and it required to first win their trust to receive a special tool, then visit a lot of barrows and pick enough material to have it made into armour and weapons.

It better not be lying around all over the place in this DLC.

Interesting ideas. You seem full of them right now.

For me the mask serves a couple of purposes. Most obvious is hiding his true identity, which I feel is prime for a good twist. The Dragonborn can be of any race... will this stretch even further? The Princes influences in this DLC show the possibilities can be stretched and still be believable. Reappearing now asks several questions of his origin and nature.

Secondly wearing the mask mocks the Priests and the Dragons. Im not sure if he was ever a Priest to begin with but wearing it is a symbol taunting the overlords.

The other thing about the mask is that it seems to have tentacles in some parts, and from what we have heard, tentacles are indicative of Hermaeus Mora. I wonder what his role in all this mess will be especially since he seems to pretty much be a mystery himself. One other thing I'm wondering, is what role will the Dunmer have in all this since they seem to be living in Solstheim as well.

Especially on a low level it's useful to put your fastest weapon in your left hand, since apparently that determines attack speed. So until you get the dual wield perks, you could put a dagger in your left hand and swing a sword or axe with your right hand. At least that's what I saw being recommended when I looked up a good strategy for dual wielding.

The mask looks Cthulu like and i wouldn't be surprised if Hermaeus's appearance looks similar to the mainstream portrayal Cthulu. Heck repeating what's been speculated before Hermaeus might be Miraak's benefactor, or Miraak is a manifestation of him, or Miraak is his son who joined a cult where s*** got real when Alduin wanted him drink the Kool aid, and he cried to daddy for help who then hid him away for thousands of years until the coast was clear.

The only dual wielding I've liked has been my Dunmer nightblade who dual-wields bound swords. It's a pain having to summon twice every time, but he doesn't have to use melee too often and OMG is he badass when he does.

@greengoron:  I've pretty much come to accept that it is a different priest than we've heard of before, named Miraak.  What makes you think he is the Greedy Man?  Because from all I've seen, that's Lorkhan.  I highly doubt that we're going to battle Lorkhan.  Although it would be interesting if we fought an avatar of his, since we spent so much of Dawnguard giving praise to Auri-El to get access to the shrines (my Stormcloak hated that, lol).

Does anyone wonder if the snow elves could again be involved? The mask reminds me of a Falmer helmet, and they were supposedly driven from Solstheim by Ysgramor.  I wonder sometimes if the war between Ysgramor and the Snow Elves couldn't have been over the dragon cult.  The Snow Prince is also supposed to be interred on Solstheim- did you see his cairn in Bloodmoon?

I was under the impression that "The Adversary" was Lorkhan, whom "The Greedy Man" is supposed to be an "aspect" of, and who would also go under the name of "Thartaag the World-Devourer" at the "End of Seasons" - obviously just the Skaal names for Alduin the World-Eater and the Dragon Crisis.

This would suggest that there is at least some relation between The Greedy Man and Thartaag/Alduin - if one were a Dragonborn and the other a Dragon, that would definitely be a connection, no?

And yes, I did see his cairn (which was built by the Nords, who interred him there out of respect for his prowess in battle) - there was no body inside, just his armor and weapon. Curious, indeed.

Seven Fights of the Aldudagga has the Greedy Man trying to hide pieces of the world from Alduin, and getting stuck in a void space this created when he got caught and was running away. lol So I don't think the Greedy Man could be an ordinary mortal. In the account, Alduin says that he "always" tries to stop him from eating the world. I interpreted that as Lorkhan himself, who was then trapped under Red Mountain.

I never said that anyone HERE in this thread is playing a goody-two-shoes character. But I''ve seen plenty of people like that here on BSN in the Mass Effect threads. People who complain they can't play Renegade because it's too evil or they can't get it over their heart to betray poor old Mordin etc. etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely *love* playing evil. . . .  in games where playing evil actually means something.    You know,  where  Evil is a tad more imaginative/creative than just:   "ME SMASH KITTENS AND EAT OLD LADY HEARTS   MUHAHAHAHA."

There are some games that do evil really well,   And then there are some that don't.

The good games  have different shades of black. Skyrim dropped the ball on this one in a few areas.

Well to be honest Skyrim drops to balls in so many areas when it comes to roleplaying, not just for "evil" characters. The ability to really roleplay in Skyrim is really limited. In the end it all burns down to whether you serve the people of Skyrim, or simply serve yourself only.

Still, I think Skyrim does a better job at allowing the player to play a morally ambigous character than games like Fable (now that's a game where evil is cliché and boring as f*ck!).

But honestly, I don't take myself or my evil character very seriously and neither should you. I just play "evil" for kicks 'n giggles.

Plenty of Skyrim fans refuse to play the Dark Brotherhood or do the Daedra quests.

None of the regulars on this thread.  I can assure you of that.  The general consensus here is that the DB questline is one of the best in this game.

Well I'm glad to hear that! DB is awesome! :D

TES doesn't have "canon" as far as I'm concerned.  The lore is bigger than the games, and MK is as foundational as it gets.  Having contradictory stories is part of the fun.  I mean, the Nords used to think Orkey was a trickster and evil, but now he's their respected god of the dead.  Alduin was the god of time, now they say He Ent Akatosh.

The Skaal thinking that Lorkhan is evil is interesting because normally you think of Nords as being aligned Padhomaic/ Lorkhan, but the Skaal are obviously more Anuic.  Just as most of the elves are Anuic but the Dunmer are closer to Padhomaic.  Probably one reason I like both those races the best- Team Lorkhan all the way.

Not having played Bloodmoon, it will be interesting for my Stormcloak to meet the Skaal.  I think she probably won't know what to do with them, never having met Nords like that before.  OTOH my huntress is more Skaal in her outlook.

Aaargh can we get this DLC already.  I want this one a lot more than any of the others.   :o
