Can some of you knowledgeable homebuilders help me out?

I am finally going to be building a house, but I keep hearing about bugs that you have to work around somehow. I have read the page on UESP but there's always a huge list of bugs for everything, and most of them I have never seen in hundreds of hours.

Thinking about building Windstad or Lakeview Manor. Any easy rules of thumb to avoid something gamebreaking?

I've only done 2 playthroughs with Hearthfire installed  (PC version, here), but so far I have not encountered a single bug with it.  Not-a-one.  In my first playthrough I built up the Falkreath Hold house  (Lakeview Manor?), and in my second playthrough I did Heljarchen Hall up north.

But, There are some odd things I've noticed that make me wonder if they're intentional...

1)The Apiary you can build in your yard does not respawn Bees;  does not respawn beehive husks, and doesn't spawn honeycombs at all.
2) If you have a spouse, she will spend the entirety of her daytime hours outside, standing motionless in one place, staring at your garden.  And while she's outside, the option to buy and sell from  her/his store does not come up.
3) If you put beds upstairs, your Housecarl will sleep in one of them at night.  Which I'm pretty sure is how it's supposed to be.  But your Steward will not.  Instead, your steward will go upstairs and stand in front of the bed, just staring at it all night.

I'm sure I read something about new bugs you should be aware of in Hearthfire, but it drives me nuts that I don't know what they are.

But it sounds like it's a least safe to start building houses. Thanks. Think I'll start out with Windstad.

UGH! I think the "The Gift" quest is broken. Stupid Vingalmo refuses start the quest and is only giving me ones I've already completed.

Is there anyway to force the quest into your log?

One year today.

One long year of Skyrim.
I mean wow...how many games can you say have kept you playing for an ENTIRE year?
Not even Morrowind could claim that for me.

Agreed! Not too many are in this class: NWN1, DA, and ME are about it for me.

It's kinda depressing actually.  I remember Friday, November 11, 2011.   I planned the following week for Vacation, and decided to start it early by calling in sick from work that day.   And  the day before that I took a 6 hour nap, then woke up, Ordered a pizza, scoffed it down, then raced to Gamestop for their midnight release.  Got the game, raced back  home, installed it and started playing.  The next 9 days were pure magic.  Everything was fresh and new.

Now that it's a year later, this  "anniversary" does nothing but remind you that you can't go back to that.   You can still have tons of fun playing, but it  will never be as good as that first time.

BG2 holds the record for me.  11 long years.  This year, 2012, has been the only year since BG2's release that I haven't played it.

Very true Yrkoon.

I recalled all those times I sat back and went "WOW!"
Looking down from the hills and seeing Whiterun on the plains.
Seeing Blackreach for the first time.
Wandering the fields of Sovngarde
Meeting up with and talking to Paarthurnax for the first time.

Which is why I loved Dawnguard since it adds more WOW into the game.
I hope Dragonborn does the same.

I'm not so sure about Hearthfire....

It feeling like if I adopt a child, I'd just repeat being the neglectful parent like I was in Fable games...

Well, Civ 5 is still fun even after two years, but I've played Skyrim more hours.

And the best part is that we are starting to see some of the fantastic quest mods that people have been working on for the past year. I bet we will see some really huge mods with new land massess next year. I know at least one team has been working on a Solstheim mod since last November, sadly.

Hell, Dawnguard has the best "By the Nine!" moments for me. Seeing the portal open and entering the Soul Cairn, meeting Gelebor and learning the true fate of the Snow Elves, the absolutely breathtaking beauty of the Forgotten Vale, and the epic final battle with Arch-Curate Vyrthur (the true villain of Dawnguard IMHO) all blew my mind.

I think Dragonborn will deliver the goods as well - probably gonna be some major nostalgia for Morrowind vets like myself. Traveling into Apocrypha and the inevitable showdown between the first and last of the Dragonborn will also no doubt be mind blowers. It's gonna be a good DLC, I can tell.

Nothing quite tops fighting two dragons on an icy lake with Serena and Big D.
Especially with an aurora overhead.

I dont give a **** anymore about all the people crying tear of rage over the DLC.
I am going to ride a dragon no matter what they say.

LOL Get a nice steward and then you don't need to feel (too) guilty about leaving them home to go out adventuring.  Daddy Ghorbash can bandage their bruised knees while I'm gone.

The only Hearthfire bug I experience is CTD entering Breezehome.  Apparently HF changed a navmesh that is critical for loading it.  Sad for my characters that have a lot of stuff stored in there.

Little known fact: There is no 2 dragon battle, if you do the Forgotten Vale before doing the Dragon stone quest for the Jarl of whiterun.

Don't be silly your character is obviously a Goa'uld. You even have a Jaffa bodyguard.

I think the Glowing eyes thing is pretty cool. You're like, a Draugr, only without the ugly draugr armor.

Of course, if you wanted to, you could find a full set of Ancient nord armor and wear it, thus making you almost totally a draugr. Then all you'd need is a mod to cover the missing details, like the dead skin, and the voice set..

Edit:  just thought of something.  Have you tried becoming a vampire?  if so, did it change the glow color of your eyes to...red?

No? I have had 2 dragons spawn so close to each other at the same time that I was fighting both at once. Outside Dawnstar.

I took on a Blood Dragon and an Elder Dragon out in The Reach a while back - thanks once again to Durnehviir, I was able to take them on as Durny kept one busy allowing me to concentrate on the other. Same scenario in the Forgotten Vale with the added bonus of having Serana with me then (no follower when I fought the Blood and Elder Dragons).

I don't want her to be either a draugr or a vampire.   I just backtracked and will avoid draugr dungeons.  Sad but what can you do.

Some little details I noticed- I was out adventuring with a character who hasn't done the MQ (edit- she has started the MQ but not gotten far) and is at level 40, and came upon Alduin raising a dragon.  I hadn't ever seen that before apart from the scene in Kynesgrove.  I think it made a sufficient impression on my reluctant dovahkiin that she needs to get her ass up to High Hrothgar and figure out what's going on.

I then came upon Amren out fighting bandits with a couple of mercenaries.  Apparently if you return his sword, he goes out on mercenary jobs again.  Nice little touch.

Dragons don't spawn at all in skyrim proper  before  you   do the "retrieve the dragonstone"  quest for the jarl of whiterun.

Update your drivers.
I did and nothing they claimed caused the glowy eyes does it anymore.

Pretty easy to do really.
