Another example of branching paths is the gates at Whiterun. There are multiple ways to enter the city, including bribery, speechcraft dialogue check, picking up and completing certain quests, perhaps even fighting your way in.

You know, out of all the previews, all the screenshots, everything... if this is true, and this is an element that's really given a lot of coverage and depth inside the game, then it's probably the thing that's most likely to get me to pre-order.

The gates at Whiterun were described this way by both Andrew Reiner (Game Informer) as well as Stephen Freundorfer (Gamepro.de).

Sounds cool. I do like multiple approaches/solutions to broad objectives though.

You should be able to levitate into the city, like Barenziah did.

I fully agree after all it gives a game lots more replay as you can see what would happen if you did things another way.

Indeed, thats one thing Oblivion lacked at times. The memorable missions were the ones like being locked in the house for the Dark Brotherhood quest because it had multiple approaches.

Also it be good to see in a depth chat system where your words actually have a impact as well now.

^Oh, I played that mission 2 days ago.

It's gold!

Lol. My Multiple Solutions blog entry tackles this exact issue and uses that exact quest as an example of how to do it right.

I intend to get into Whiterun as my Orc Skooma trader by crafting a suit out of Horker meat and waiting for a dragon to swoop down and pick him up. Once airborne and over the city my orc will stab the dragon's soft underbelly with a spear, falling hopefully onto something soft inside the city walls. Or...maybe he'll just bribe the gate guards.

I intend to use illusion magic and trick them into letting me in. If that'll be allowed.

Im sure the charm spell will return, but it will probably be used as a boost to the speech check skill I would assume

Maybe you can marry one of the guys guarding the gate and then divorce him after he lets you pass.

That's fine with me.

Factional disguises with illusion magic, speechcraft and other social skills modifying it's effectives would be epic too. So, you'd disguise yourself as a Guardsman or a Blacksmith, or a Farmer and get through if your skill is high enough.

I am personally a huge fan of giving a player wide, broad objectives, then giving them absolute free reign on how to complete that objective with the tools to create a variety of consequences depending on what they do and how successful they are. Makes the game player-driven, forging your own story with your own character and all that jazz.

Any step towards that is a positive. Which Skyrim seems to be.

I wonder if Skyrim will have wandering caravans like the ones in Fallout 3. It would be cool if a stealth based character could hide in an ox cart to get into Whiterun.

I really want summon Xivilai to come back but one without glitches and a shield spell because the one in oblivion was master summon but weaker than most expert level summons, BTW would be fun if stark reality spell comes back, was the most hilarious spell in oblivion and have it been any word of thieves guild making a return yet ?

traveling merchants are confirmed (and they camp out beside rivers from time to time).

also, there was a Spanish article that made some outrageous claims about Skyrim, and one of them was if you meet a traveling merchant on the road and kill him, then go to his destination, the townspeople will gossip about why he didn't arrive.

this same article also said that if you put on the dead traveling merchant's clothes, the townspeople will notice and get publicly ask you about it

Pft, I never had to use that spell in Oblivion.

Ah, very nice Sir. That is excellent. I have been waiting for some details like this to appear in a roleplaying game for some time. I can't wait to get myself in trouble for having a character walk into town wearing a well-known character's clothing.

Ok folks got a problem here. I was on the road headed to Leyawiin and I start getting something about "Countess Alessia Caro is unconcious". popping up on my screen. It was beginning to bug me but further on I find a downed painted horse, a dead lady named Hlidar Mothril a short distance from the horse and the countess dead body guard a short distance away. Now I've looked all over the area up to the briddge and cant find the countess any clues here would be appreciated.

She's an "essential" character, meaning she can't be killed. She often travels from Leyawiin to... can't remember, but her daughter or family member's the count/countess of somewhere, so she's scripted to go back and forth, occasionally finding herself ambushed along the way.

But since she can't be killed (hence the unconscious message), she'll eventually make her way back to Leyawiin as if nothing ever happened.

Heh, so you know in advance don't be surprised if the "Buy a house in Skinguard (Skingrad?) "can't be done as the orc you need to speak to points at a tree. He wasn't tagged and sadly seems to like walking off the very high bridge...to his death.

Ok so your sayin I can just releave the guard and Hilder morthil of their possessions and not worry about it as I'll never find her?<LOL>
