Certain mods help with inventory, like those that add sorting chests. But yeah, I like crafting and pick up every little thing so I do a lot of IM.

^I think its called insanity, but I just couldn't let it be! I think it will be awhile before I try a second playthrough...

@Addai67; I also pick up everything even though I have 700,000 gold. And I liked penitus oculatus armor so much I picked up 29 sets of it during the DB questline. Don't ask me why. IDK...

the penitus oculatus armor is "bugged" so you can wear a circlet/DPM with it, or your followers. thought i tend not to give my followers helmets- unless it's the Carven Nordic Armor.

I don't really care about the beehive/fish pen don't constantly generate the alchemic items... i rarely do Alchemy, and when i do, it's usually health potions, fortify blacksmith/enchanting or weak poisons.
and i'm playing on console.

So, about how much time as everyone spent managing their inventory? The past week its about all I've been doing after getting Hearthfire. Building the homes, furnishing them, moving weapons and inventory, in some cases creating weapons to go in the home and match the overall theme, sorting everything out in containers, etc. It has been an undertaking. I bet I've spent at least 20 hours doing inventory management over the course of this playthrough.

I usually spend more time collecting iron ingots than pretty much anything else, when I'm in 'build mode'. Good lord. In one of my playthroughs, I had actually packratted a ton of ores/ingots of all types, so it made things quite a bit easier. I think I had nearly 500 iron ingots - the trouble was hauling them to the house to use them. Thank you, Locket of St. Jiub and Aetherium Crown! (both from Dawnguard).

I must say, though, you've taken OCD to a whole new level. Image IPB

I picked up my Dunmer pure mage, Nadene Theray, over the weekend. I was curious to see if there were Dunmer-specific dialogue changes in Dragonborn, but I've been so busy doing other stuff, that I have only spent about two hours there with this character.

Wow, I had forgotten just how difficult (and squishy) it is with no armor. This is my first character to strictly just use magic (and a dagger, if enemies get too close). It's kind of terrifying at times.

For instance, we cleared the ash spawn out the temple in Raven Rock, and it was tense. I had Jenassa with me, but she was in unimproved Thieves Guild Armor, and my character was basically in a bathrobe. It was a whole lot of pot-chugging, but somehow we made it. We walked out of there with a bunch of ores, and very few potions left. After that, I thought it best to press our luck in Skyrim for a little while before coming back. Hehe.

I notice that the Companions have been really active in this playthrough. I was in the Eastmarch area, and happened along a path where there was dead mammoth after dead mammoth. 'What would have caused this', I wondered - my curiosity was sated moments later, when I heard battle up ahead. Njada Stone-Arm, Aela, and Skjor were on a slaughter-fest. Once they finished that mammoth off, they just kept walking.

I bumped into Farkas and Vilkas on two other occasions, as well. They weren't quite as thirsty for blood as their shield brothers and sisters.

^I remember running into a few Companions with my squishy mage. They were fighting a bear, but the losers went down and then the bear came after ME. xD
When I spotted them fighting a saber cat with a different character I decided to lend them a hand, but I accidentally hit one with my sword, so they all turned hostile... ehh, stearing clear of roaming Companions from now on!

Well I just realized that even my hardcore RPing friend has his limits.

He is a guy who only plays a merchant, avoids battle does no do most quest lines really.
Just goes and makes money with his main skills being Enchanting/Smithing./Alchemy/Speech.

That was until Rochelle the Red kidnapped Ysolda.
"ROCHELLE THE RED! NOW ROCHELLE THE DEAD!"

It seems he also put lots of points into archery and took out a ton of bandits.
I found that quest silly really in my game.

You just decided to kidnap a walking DEMIGOD'S wife. Ah well as Wrex said:
"Killing the latter, is a favor to the universe"

Exactly! I'm not sure what stopped me from attacking them while they were fighting the mammoth. I mean, from a distance, they pretty much looked like bandits.

Well, except that they spent more time on their knees. Image IPB

As for Mjoll as Steward...maybe on PC you can make that happen, but for the rest of us, she can't be one. At least according to the uesp wiki:

Mjoll the Lioness has the dialogue options to become a steward in the Creation Kit but the options do not actually appear in game.

Well, Riften needs her more. She's the Rift's Batman. She even has her own sidekick!

I've managed my inventory long before Hearthfire, but I agree that it can be very time consuming to get everything right, and even then there are always slight changes to where I want to keep things, so it's always in flux a bit. I'm honestly not sure what I'll keep in my Hearthfire homes, since I still have a bit of room to spare in Hjerim. Maybe items, books, staves, and clothes from the DLCs.

Is it difficult to get the materials to build the homes for Hearthfire, and to get the hang of literally constructing your home? From what I've read, it seems like it takes a great deal of effort.

Once you get a Steward, you can simply pay them to furnish the house for you, and ta-da.

If you decide to build it all yourself, you'll need about 200+ lumber, 500 iron ingots, probably 100+ corundum ingots, and some other miscellaneous ingots... you'll also need to go on a slaughterfest of deer, horkers, goats, bear, saber cats, slaughterfish, etc., to hang on your walls. The amounts vary between wings.

Then you'll also need a bunch of straw, glass, goat horns, leather strips, etc. Quarried stone and clay are right outside your house. You can also have your Steward order the stone, clay, and lumber for you. And visit stores for the glass, horns, and straw.

But to answer your question...nah, it's pretty easy to get materials. The kicker is how many each shopkeeper has in stock, and how much you can carry.

And building? There's nothing to it. Choose what you want to make at the drafting table, then make it. You can see what you need for each piece. Nothing is custom, though. Each wing/section is identical from house to house. You just get to pick which wings you want.

The only thing tedious is going from town to town buying up all the iron.  I suggest you do that early and as often as you can.  Other than that, it wasn't hard to get into.

I figured it cost me around 30k to fully decorate my home in Hearthfire.

Nice to have something to sink those Septims into at last =D =P

It's a bit of work getting the materials, especially if you self-decorate. Iron ingots are in big demand, don't transmute all your iron or you'll be scraping.

There are some nice mods out for the Hearthfire houses, too. I haven't tried them but saw shots. Lately I've been spending time between a modded archmage quarters and Severin Manor, so haven't worked on HF houses much.

Since we're mentioning houses, is there a chance that there's any decent Winterhold homes or something to place a Hearthfire house in Winterhold? Every time I check there's nothing good, the last time I checked the only good thing was a house that had interiors that were too small for my liking.

Which mage skill trees did you use, and how high did you get them? I've found through my own trial and error on mage builds that there certainly are ways to do it wrong.

In this playthrough, with my Dunmer pure mage, I'm focusing on Illusion and Alteration, mostly; with Destruction and Conjuration as secondary skills. I think my new favorite move is using Calm, then Backstab. Hilarity ensues.

ermm destruction mostly think i left her on 64 or something, restoration lvled as required.
Basically using fire spells mostly, so for a long time i was arms outstretched using flames which had me banging my head on the keyboard falling alseep, then at 50 destruction i got fireball was it or firebolt, which got me excited until i used it an i was like mmm ok.

Managed to lvl up archery abit lol since my magicka ran out pretty fast :) , im guessing the "rogue" class in this game is going to be the one for me tbh, also tried a 2h warrior, but id do a 2h power hit i think it is and end up flat on my face wondering where my target was an lo an behold id look around an the buggers sitting on the floor laughing at me

Yeah but that was the last house I made. I guess Winterhold has nothing going for it in the game itself and for mods as well.

I'm sure you probably knew this, but different spell types work better on different opponents. If you're fighting mages, use electricity. For melee/warriors, use frost. For undead and most animals, use fire. Switching it up between spell types, even within just the Destruction tree, will make things more interesting. Plus, you've got the cloak and rune spells you can use. Destruction kinda blows once you get to about...I dunno, Expert level?

I'd recommend trying out the other trees, personally. And putting level-up points into those trees really help. (Conjuration is probably still my all-time favorite. There's just something about conjuring dual Dremora Lords to make your day).

With the 2-handed warrior types, it's easy to mis-align your shot, so to speak. For me, I prefer the faster and lighter 2-handed weapons (greatsword) as opposed to the heavier, slower ones (warhammer). However, there is an Orcish warhammer out there that I think you'd like. It's called the Longhammer, and it's in Liar's Retreat. Supposedly it's faster than a greatsword, and it actually feels lighter, more agile than any of the other 2-handers, imo.

tbh m8, i prob just go back to my archer, im only level 45 with her an not touched dawnguard or dragonborn and only done the main quest/thieves guild and unification of skyrim, but id spent over 110 hours on her so just felt like a wee different out-take for abit, but i can hear my wee wood elf beckoning me back so i guess she got a sore head sitting with the weans in solitude lol

Rock on. Hey, if you're doing an Archer build, you can supplement your skills by adding perk points to the Sneak tree. There's one in there for doing 3x damage with bows (Deadly Aim).
