So as a PS3 player I finally get Dawnguard and the first thing I do is not work to finish the quests but instead become a Vampire Lord and then build my manor near Morthal. I play such proactive characters.
Heh. I did something a little similar, although I did it halfway through the Vampire Lord Questline. It was nice to finally have Dragonborn, Hearthfire (spelled Hearthfires on PS3 for some reason), and Dawnguard for the PS3 after so long. Discovered Lord Harkon was planning to get rid of my Volkihar Dunmer mage as soon as my protagonist accomplished the task of discovering the secret to the Tyranny of the Sun prophecy, was getting in the good graces of the other members of the Court, had the task to assassinate someone in Windhelm while posing as a member of the Dawnguard, and then my character decided that it would be the perfect time to build a house and adopt two children.
It's not too difficult to rationalize my character's actions. He is going to kill someone while posing as one of the Dawnguard, the Jarls are already giving
implicit consent for the Dawnguard to hunt him down and murder him because they exposed my Tribunal Arch-mage as a vampire of Harkon's Court, so building a home and "retiring" with a family would make any of the accusations of the Dawnguard all the more difficult to believe. I also think he wanted to give the two lonely, orphaned children he found a better life.
My protagonist probably deserved a break as well. After being bombarded with two Cultists and a plethora of vampires and vampire thralls attacking Winterhold at the same time (super villain team-up) with a naked Courier finally giving my character the quest to repair the White Phial, my Volikhar finally became a proper Vampire Lord, tossed around a few enemies and even defeated a dragon in his new form, killed two couriers for the Dawnguard, entered the realm of the Soul Cairn and defeated all the undead foes in his path (and helped Saint Juib), and I figure he probably needed some zen moments.
Although I decided to built my family home in Falkreath, which is also a hub for some vampire activity. I'm not sure Morthal is really the best place to raise children. My adopted children really liked the lake in Falkreath, and I finally got the opportunity to give Meeko a decent home, too.

Don't forget to build your coffin in the basement.
I wonder what my adopted children think about the fact that 'Papa' has a coffin in the basement...

Is the better vampires - spell where you turn an NPC you've fed from into a companion something that is supposed to available from the get go? I can't seem to get it working. I'm using Dawnguard and got turned to vampire by the plot quest.
DG adds 3 citizens that you can turn into vampires via a radiant quest thru Vingalmo. Then he's supposed to give you a quest to turn your spouse into a vampire. It's buggy on the PC since he sends you to turn the same 3 people over and over.
I really hated that. I read that there's no way to get rid of the quest except to kill the vampire you already turned. Since it's DLC, I presume the developers aren't going to patch this issue for the consoles...
