On my caster-oriented character, I focus on reducing the spell cost of Destruction and Alteration spells, and use alchemy potions to mimic Illusion and Restoration. I do take enough perks in the Illusion school to get Quiet Casting, so that I can cast Dragonhide silently before engaging a powerful enemy like a Draugr Death Overlord (who can use Unrelenting Shout and then kill you with arrows while you're getting up, at least on Master/Legendary without armor).

I also use the level 1 Slow Time if I need to reapply dragonhide, as it usually gives me enough time to cast it before being interrupted.

I'll be switching to PC this summer and I'm very excited to get mods for New Vegas and Skyrim. Two of my favorite games.

Haven't a clue yet. Going to start looking into next month once my classes start slowing down.

I use Balanced Magic and Ancient Spells which adds some very useful spells that were in Morrowind and Oblivion. I'm constantly using Sea Stride and Ease Burden, for instance.

So what magic mod do people prefer to use?

So far I have seen three that are really endorsed:
Balanced Magic
Better Magic
Midas Magic

So anyone use those mods or have others they use?

Extremely Vanilla Destruction Revamp (increases bonus perks)
Exalted Magic - Indefinite Buffs (keeps some spells on until released, like DA series; reduces Mana reserves)

How is that magic duel mod? It looked sweet. But I could see it getting old fast.

Ok,  my totally individual, totally opinionated view on this subject is this:

1)  Mods that allow offensive based spells  (think: destruction  spells) to scale upwards are OK. since this game's  enemy mages' destruction spells certainly do, and also because, lets face it, Bethesda dropped the ball on the destruction school.  It's so nerfed and underpowered that  a pure destruction build is practically un-viable

2) Mods that enhance/empower  offensive/defensive spell perks are OK as well, for the same reason as #1

3) But Mods that turn  activated/duration-based spells  into  sustains?   No.  I draw the line there.    It's cheating.  You're breaking the  game's  entire  magic, race and combat system.  From the ground up, in fact.

You might as well just  fire up the console and make yourself essential.

I primarily use appearance-oriented mods thus far; SMIM, WATER, SkyUI, Lush Trees & Grass, Ruin Meshes, better snow, Climates of Tamriel, old (better) version of FX injector, HDR skill menu, proper length arrows, Non-LARP thinner blades, Caliente's body/face/armor overhaul (which I tweak with her Bodyslide tool to get a range of body styles in-game), and of course the hi-res textures DLC. There are a few more (I have 40 plugins active) but these are the biggies.

I also use all the Unofficial Patch mods and my own patch mod. Run the game with uGrids 7 and enthusiast ini tweaks @ 1920x1200 while streaming 720p. i7 processor is a beast (I have original Nehalem i7-965 running at 3.75GHz).

Combat tends to bore me so I minimalize it by playing on easy. Don't really need balance mods for that. Just my personal preferences, of course.

As noted, only some spells are sustainable, and like in the DA series, it reduces the Mana pool for the other spells until released. As it is a solo game, this cannot be cheating since I make the rules; simply alters the way in which certain spells are cast. And even with this mod, robed mages were still a pain to play.

As for essential status, I have plenty of reloads that apparently say differently, although apparently reloading make the character essential anyway.

Just completed Dawnguard and sided with the vampires. My female Nord looks really cool with those glowing eyes. I play as a stealthy archer and I really need to develop my melee skills. I think I'll go do the Companions questline now. It kinda sucks that you're forced into becoming a werewolf in order to progress the storyline. I would much rather remain a vampire.

I use Midas Magic, Empowered Magic (which balances out some things, but makes destruction way better not OP though) and the Apoclaypse spell package which adds a myriad of spells.

Yeah I havent started the Companions questline for any of my characters yet for exactly this reason.  :(

Going to have to create a new character to RP that one I think...

Speaking about werewolves, how do I become a werebear? You can become a werewolf from the Companions storyline but not werebear? I've tried all options in Solstheim and never experienced it.

As I understand, if you desire to regain Vampiric status afterwards, simply revisit Serana for another bite....

Also, one may join the Companions and skip the lycanthrope initiation. You will not become the Harbinger, but still have access to the Sky Forge, rooms, etc.

You can summon a werebear by using the Beast Stone power, but you can't become one yourself. That would have been pretty cool.

Will I lost any points that I've invested in the Vampire Lord perk tree?

It doubles the fun coming from magic for me, I hated magic until I installed that mod.

Massive disappointment regarding werebears. Our only hope is it will come as a future addon.
