I don't play Skyrim on PC but I'd play the game vanilla first, get the hang of it, learn the mechanics and stuff, check out all the places, basically experience the game as it is unmodded, then go in and do what you want modwise and experience the game in a whole new way.

This, but I would recommend not doing everything first; maybe just the Main Quest  Pls leave yourself many, many surprises so that you may enjoy that just installed experience again as much as possible.

I can't imagine enjoying Skyrim when just limiting yourself to the Main Quest. This game is meant to be explored.

Quite true. I meant restricted as far as storylines and organizations are concerned, as my first run attempted to do far too much. This resulted in more of a mechanical Player Character rather than one that had a personality and was memorable.

It's been great to go back in time a bit and re-play Elder Scrolls IV.  I have much more appreciation for it as a game now than I ever did the first time, having thoroughly consumed Skyrim.

Scenes like this have more impact.

Ah, good times, back when Blades were Blades, and not just a couple of doofi scurrying about in irrelevance.

You don't.  You learn to appreciate him as the only one in the game preaching the gospel of Michael Kirkbride.

That's actually a pretty good advice. Gives much more enjoyable repeated playthroughs too. It's fun to try some other character builds in Skyrim, but always doing the same quests can become boring quickly. There's so much to do that there's enough content foor several playthroughs however - if you're not too greedy, trying to accomplish everything on 1 (which probably is almost impossible - but you can cover enough content that repeated playthroughs won't be fun).

And, like Elhanan wrote, your omni-character will lack personality.

Me? I've never played the civil war questline yet (well, got the Jagged Crown with my current Volkihar Build for the first time). Still haven't played much of Dragonborn either. Haven't seen the vampire side of Dawnguard (though I guess it's not that different... and I guess I'll do that with my current character). And I've already had 4 earlier characters, all in level 40-60 range (only 1 finished the main questline though... one didn't even do Bleak Falls Barrow, even though he was around level 50).

On another note... man, the 3-word Slow Time shout rocks! Especially if you empower it through being a vampire Necromage. The enemies barely move, while you're only slowed down and can dance around them and kill them easily. Well, for me it officially took the crown of the best shout from Elemental Fury - though the latter is much easier and faster to obtain - and much better if you only have a word or 2 and are not a vampire Necromage.

Agreed! I had much more appreciation for Oblivion than for Skyrim on many levels, mostly from a role playing aspect. But Morrowind and then Daggerfall do better retrospectively in that manner.  The thing that makes Skyrim incredible, especially on PC, are the graphics; It kept me going.

For those of us PC users who bought the game on 11/11/11, at midnight, this was the way  it  went down.   We didn't have a choice.

It was weeks before any meaningful mods surfaced, and even longer  than that before Bethesda finally  opened the gates completely by releasing the Creation Kit.

By the time I installed  my very first alteration  to  Vanilla Skyrim, I had already logged upwards of 400 hours.  And even then,  those first mods  I used were  minor "ease of use", type stuff  (Richer merchants; ammo crafting; Breezehome enchanter table;  etc.  stuff like that)  It wasn't until *much* later.... after I had  put in 1000+ hours into the game,  that I let loose and began to install the huge, game changing stuff.

Hit a major glitch in my game; wanted to warn those playing with Dawnguard DLC. When in the Forgotten Vale, do not tell Serana to wait (was tired of her jumping in the way while killing Falmer). When I returned, she had no Command listed to Resume Following. This meant I had to find a fix, or replay over a day's material from my last hard save.

After reading possible commands and intel on the subject, I eventually made it past the front doors of the Chantry, and she appeared with me. Then I waited in place for 3-5 days, and while never getting the desired Command, it had reset itself where she rejoined herself. Quite annoying, so be warned.

For me, my fave Shouts are (in no real order) Marked For Death, Clear Skies (has several advantages outdoors), Throw Voice, Kyne's Peace (tire of facing wolves and bears), and Unrelenting Force (never gets old).  I like having options, and these offer a DB a lot of versatility.

I am unable to move about in combat very well, so Slow Time and Elemental Fury do not see much use in my games. But I have been utilizing Storm Call a lot more while soloing around opposing Forts, towers, and the like simply to rid myself of pesky interruptions when traveling. Do NOT fire on Shadowmere and actually hit....

They can be, but I enjoy trying various tactics and approaches; hence discovering the many uses of Clear Skies. Only recently did I discover it can stagger a dragon before breathing; very handy, and a much faster cooldown than many other Shouts.

Some of them are.  The fire/frost breaths are a joke.  Ice form has since been made redundent (and does not breech ward spells).  Drain Vitality is meh.  You need all the Disarms to make it worthwhile.

About half of them are quite situational but very potent in such situations (e.g. animal allegiance w/ mammoths around, Marked for Death Vs. bosses).

Unrelenting force, Elemental Fury, Bend Will, and Slow Time (need at least 2 words) are all consistent winners and have many many uses.

Not to mention, they're powered enough to make your traverse through a Draugr dungeon not so much fun when YOU'RE getting disarmed because some garden variety Deathlord shouted you down...and you end up spending 10 minutes after each battle looking for that double enchanted, legendary ebony war axe.

Sure, you can pre-empt them with an UF and whack him in short order, but depending on the crypt you find yourself in, his four friends in the corner might have their way with you during your cool down.  Like here:

No...a number of Shouts are fully functional and powered quite enough for given situations.
My go to's are (situation dependent):

UF
Marked for Death
Clear Skies
Slow Time

EDIT: Bad picture upload.

Draugr disarm becomes ineffective at 30. The game says, 'He's had enough."

I always been a fan of Soul Tear. Instant hitpoint smash and if you get the killing shot they get back up and fight for you.

Dragonrend is the most useful shout against dragons, if you are a melee warrior.

My favorite is Storm Call, I just wish that it wouldn't hit allies all the time.

Yeah the allies hitting thing and the 10 minute cool down makes me never use it tbh. Visually its awesome though.

Great for certain locations, however: Forts with Thalmor, Embassies with Thalmor, etc. etc. etc....

Why would anyone want to shut him up? Heimskr is the most peaceful mullah in Tamriel!

Well, you don't really need to move to take advantage of these shouts. Elemental Fury simply increases the attack speed (fully powered by 100%), so you can just stand there and keep swingin' - at least as long as there are enemies in melee range.
Slow Time will... uh... slow both you and your enemies down... but while you will be only a bit slower, your enemies will barely move (or attack) after a 3-worder shout. Could take them the whole shout duration to make 1 swing. So you could dance around them... but you can simply hack them to pieces while standing still as well.

Think I hit the 3.1 CTD due to effects yesterday during the Battle of Whiterun of the Civil War quests. had to reload time and again; finally chose to remove a mod that was not currently in use for that DB. At least, this is what I am guessing.

Can someone confirm that the Battle Fury Shout is actually effective for allies? I have used it with my current DB, but am uncertain if it truly is useful for allies, and maybe it is only for Followers. I try and use such magics during a time where the Fog of War may be disruptive.
