The game is not made any more time consuming by the utilization of Fast Travel; simply alters the way game time is used. Instead of rapidly seeking quests from one side of the map to the other, one may undertake quests on the way to another destination. Plus Fast Travel is handy for skipping tedium if it appears, such as recovering a horse or follower, or re-walking paths that were recently cleared (eg; Fort Dawnguard, High Hrothgar, etc).
