The one not in the top 20 nexus mods that I'd recommend is the Apocalypse Spell Package.  Bethesda whiffed badly with magic and this mod does much to actually make mages interesting to play.

I'd bang my head against the wall if I'd had to play on a 360 without Categorized Favorites Menu.

Literally just answered somebody else asking a similar question in a group elsewhere, might as well repost it. My favourites from the ones I have installed...

@Zazzerka: All the ones I use that I'd recommend for anyone, excluding anything graphics or character facemorph related:
SkyUI - This one actually is essential, if you plan on downloading anything else.

The Dance of Death - Killmoves. Lets you set pretty much anything related to them.

Immersive Armour - adds much more variety to the game's armour selection, and distributes them like they were in the game in the first place.

Immersive Weapons - same as above, but for weapons.

Improved Combat Sounds - so you feel a little more like you're hacking at flesh and less like butter.

Sounds of Skyrim - all of them. Add A LOT to the atmosphere.

Cloaks of Skyrim - just looks awesome, is all. :S

Bandoliers - helpful. And stylish.

Dragon Combat Overhaul - changes dragon fights from 'oh. a dragon.' to "************************" like it should.

Ultimate Combat - A very adjustable mod, to make combat a lot more gratifying.

Falskaar - an absolutely immense mod, pretty much a DLC unto itself.

Alternate Start - Live another life - gets rid of the annoying heavily scripted intro you're forced to do, unless you choose the 'I was caught crossing the border' 'origin.'

Predator Vision - fixes the fugly vanilla night vision, and gives something cool to vampires and werewolves.

Frostfall - not for everyone, but adds some immersion that the game sorely needed.

Player Headtracking - a tiny thing that adds so much.

Interesting NPCs - adds a lot of life to the game in the characters department. Warning though, mod is so huge it can't be uninstalled after.

Better Vampires - well...better vampires. Cause vampires sucked before.

Moonlight Tales - WEREBEARS. F*CKING WEREBEARS.

Civil War Overhaul - adds some legitimate strategy and interest to
the otherwise bland gameplay-wise civil war arc.

The Parthurnaax Dilemna - Fixes a rather annoying part of the main quest, basically.

RaceMenu - completely revamps the CC

Immersive HUD - I'm going to stop explaining why now.
Don't forget SKSE.

...whew.

Ah splendid. Thanks for the video tutorials Elhanan, and I will most definitely be checking out Frostfall, Realistic Needs and Diseases, Civil War Overhaul, Moonlight Tales, and of course Falskaar which is what sold me on getting the PC version to begin with.

Frostfall is good because I often carry a full set of Fur Armor with me just for traveling in the northern parts of Skyrim, just for RP purposes. I always thought it was stupid that your character could travel in below freezing temperatures, snow storms, and ice cold winds in nothing but Hide Armor without so much as shivering.

Frostfall is great due to highly configurable options. It can be made as harsh or passive as the Player desires. Wet & Cold goes very well with this for visuals; also one for Solstheim and ash storms.

However, there is a 3.1 CTD problem with Skyrim, so some priorities for mods should be made to avoid this error. And I also choose Vampirism as a way to avoid the issue.

I would advise against using Wet and Cold if using mods that add a lot of NPCs, the mod itself isn't buggy or anything but the problem it has is that it applies scripts to every NPC, These scripts are being executed constantly, if there are too many NPCs it will kill the engine.

Thanks for the tip, Splinter. I'd intended to install Interesting NPCs so that might have been a problem.

After looking at stuff for Moonpath to Elsweyr and Tropical Skyrim, I'm convinced the next TES game needs to be set in Elsweyr and Valenwood. Deserts and jungles are ripe for an Elder Scrolls game (not counting ESO) - throw in Summerset Isles and the setting could be used to forward the Aldmeri Dominion storyline if Bethesda intends to do anything more with that.

Yeah unfortunately running those two mods together might mess things up. Since you're looking for NPC mods, there's another one that might interest you, its called Inconsequential NPCs, its sort of the opposite of interesting NPCs.

That's what I've always thought the next game should be; have the main quest be more about the Thalmor and their inevitable conflict with everyone else rather than the usual saving the world from daedra lords/other entities stuff. Set it in Summerset, Valenwood and Elsweyr and title it TESVI: Dominion. I'd dig. I'd dig pretty hard, actually.

Those three provinces would also pretty much cover the landscape types that Skyrim couldn't squeeze in, either. :S

Considering where Skyrim is located, I'm surprised it had as much variety as it did. I'd expected there to be more much snowy tundra than what we ended up getting, which ended up being limited to just two holds while the rest are fairly temperate and green.

Hell, The Reach is basically a carbon copy of the Scottish Highlands, complete with Celtic barbarians and Nordic invaders. I always get a kick out of that, and it's actually my favorite hold in the game.

As an aside, the game runs good, but only on Medium settings. Things get a bit choppier after that. I hope that doesn't become a problem.

A lot of Skyrim's landscape design made me think of Greenland during summer more than anything else, actually. Which is pretty much precisely what I was expecting, besides, once again, The Reach.

Arena (the first Elder Scrolls game) and all pre-Oblivion TES lore claimed that Cyrodiil was a large forest with only one major city (The Imperial City).

Obviously, Bethesda didn't stick to that.

So audience expectations definitely mean nothing to them.

Well, to be fair, the old Cyrodiil probably would have been pretty bloody boring to play in in a fully realized map.

Tamriel is full of interesting provinces to explore, though (Elsweyr, Valenwood, Black Marsh, the Summerset Isles, mainland Morrowind).

I found Cyrodiil a bit boring anyway after coming off the very alien landscape of Morrowind. Cyrodiil was incredibly mundane in comparison.

I hope one day Bethesda will set a TES game in Akavir, or at least introduce Akaviri races as playable characters. I'd also love to see the return of the Dwemer someday (c'mon, you know it's gonna happen).

I've always had an image in my head of my characters having Akaviri blood in them.

I mean, surely they got their genes in the Tamriel pool at some point. :S
(Total headcanon reasons for Nerevarine heading to Akavir, tbh.)

I'd actually read that many Imperials carry Akaviri ancestry due to intermingling during the time of Reman Cyrodiil and the Dragonguard. Can't remember where exactly...

Ha. If you played on PC, you could just set her to essential. No more death. :D

I didn't care about her enough to load to save her. Honestly, I only had her tagging along because I was tired of Faendal, and didn't have the cash for Jenassa. This character is so brand new, he's only up to level 5.

And yes, yes, I've heard the 'if you played on pc' line more times than I can recount. Posted Image Posted Image

I noticed a lot of people kind of wished that Bethesda made Cyrodill a big jungle.  While that is certainly *different* from the standard RPG, that strikes me as incredibly boring.  No ruins, no vistas, no cities, no diversity, no nothing except trees.

Fur nice!  How did you get Uthgerd killed?  I definitely think she's all bark and little bite.  She gets herself killed way too often in my playthroughs

Well, we were fighting Mirmulnir (that first dragon) with Irileth and the Whiterun guards, and she just kept dropping to her knees, right in the path of his fire. She kept throwing out taunts, so I assumed she was ok. Then once the dragon was dead, I found her in a very contorted position (dead), shrugged, and looted her body.

I still play with subtitles, and it always makes me nostalgic when dragons say in their tongue, 'Dragonborn, no!'

P.S. Steel plate armor is another one that kinda makes me cringe, when worn on women. See exhibit A above.

If you could hop from tree to tree, and do overhead assassinations like in Assassin's Creed, a jungle sounds awesome. Well, actually, just sniping with a longbow/crossbow from a tree branch, high above your enemies, could be pretty fun.

As I mentioned earlier, there are incredibly interesting provinces in Tamriel which Bethesda has not explored before in a single player game (Elsweyr, Valenwood, Black Marsh, and the Summerset Isles).
