Wait, are we really having one of those discussions where we blame the game for how much time and effort we put into it and to exploiting its game mechanics? Maybe it's your job to play balanced? For instance, if I focus more on magic than anything, while still using one-handed to come in close.
As such, I often have less health midgame than most.

I wouldn't waste my time arguing we all know where this is headed. Another pointless argument about a game that someone doesn't like, no one is going to change their minds about what they like and what they don't.

You're right. No sense arguing about something this subjective. Opinion will always be confused with fact, people cry, others get ice cream, and the world keeps spinning. Kind of like my head when this crap comes up. Which it seems to do on a fairly regular (and strangely consistent) basis.

It's like a Skyrim menstruation cycle. Image IPB

^Yeah pretty much, seems like the trash from the Dragon Age forums and Mass Effect forums keeps finding its way over here.

blah, blah, blah...balance...blah, blah, blah,...gameplay...blah, blah, blah...story...blah, blah, blah...consequence.

In one ear and out the other...no offense...wait, that's not necessarily true...that would imply I care enough to not offend people who have other preferences about a video game I personally enjoy in a free marketplace, when I usually am bored to tears with the games they prefer. Never mind.

I wish more developers made such poor and lacking games.

Anyway, going to pick-up on my current playthrough and actually finish it so I can start again - while playing FO3 and New Vegas I might add.

Gosh, if only Bethesda's games weren't so flawed, un-balanced, lacking in gameplay and story blah, blah, blah...

1386 pages on a competitor's social site...hilarious.

^ To be completely honest, I haven't actually attempted the Restoration ritual spell yet, myself. I remember reading something in here about it being bugged, and it stuck with me. So alas, I haven't tried it. Once I get back to Skyrim, I'll give it a shot. I don't have many characters that are at that level in Restoration, but I suspect a couple are close.

Gotcha. You can only get the quest after you meet the Augur. For future reference: save first. Simply click on the Augur multiple times after the 'event' he puts you through; it adds the book in Collette's inventory afterwards. Save beforehand to be on the safe side.

Is your Dragonborn in Solstheim? I imagined my protagonist spent years away from Morrowind, and that Solstheim was like coming home for him - with the ash, the netches, and the towering mushrooms. The last of Clan Uvirith, striving to rebuild anew after the losses of the Oblivion Crisis, the Red Year, and the Argonian Invasion. What's your current Dragonborn's story?

How do you even balance a game where the player can go anywhere at any level and do quests in any order and build your character the way you want it? Unless you use the level scaling that everyone hated in Oblivion, or you make the landscape so forbidding that it's another Dark Souls type game, or so easy that there's no challenge at all. And are people unwilling to change the difficulty level if they're finding it too hard or too easy?

Work a bit at it yourself, because these games are meant to offer a wide range of experience and you have to manage your own expectations and player experience. If that's too much to ask, these games aren't for you.

It's not my job to balance the game. It's Bathesda's job.

It'd be more accurate to say that it's Bethesda's job to give us the best experience possible.  Which is what, IMO, they did.

That is why  there isn't rigid balance in ES games.  Because there's only one way to Balance an open world game:   By Strictly level scaling everything.     And had they done that, Skyrim wouold have been complete crap.   it would have felt really gamey.  Imagine spending 20 hours  grinding your smithing so that your sword does 200 damage, only to have the game acknowledge this and instantly  up the health pool of every Mudcrab, bandit, Deer, and spider so that they all have 2000 health.    That's your Balance wishes at work.  Who the hell wants that?!  Answer:  No RPG fan I know.  Level Scaling is the single worst  design flaw an RPG can ever have.

Related Side note:  I'm currently in the middle of a Baldur's Gate playthough.  Another Open world.  And BG1 isn't balanced either.  My party is  only about  30,000 exp away from the level cap and I've just now decided to do the Nashkel mines  lol.  YES. You heard right.  I've got Party members with 100hp.  I've got a  Mage who's Fireballs are doing 40 points of damage.... and I'm in the Naskell mines, which are filled with  Kobolds.   You know... Kobolds.  6hp critters who do 1-4 damage  if they hit you.  TLDR:  BG1 isn't balanced.  Yet it's one of the greatest classics ever made.

A point I often wonder since a number of issues I'm hearing could immediately be solved by doing such. Tired of one-shotting your enemies, dial it up to Master. Problem solved.

No, you just resort to name-calling when someone gives us a reasoned response.

If this devolves further into pointless bickering, this epic thread will likely be locked. A shame after over two years of mostly good discussion about the game, on Bioware's site of all places.

I love the openness of the ES series and think it's a refreshing break from today's linear, hand-holding games. Yes, I mod what bugs me but I do that in many games that allow modding or have a command console. It's all about having fun. Games that don't make me feel like I'm having fun, or can't be modded to, aren't part of my library. Simple. :)

Agreed....

No major complaints from me on a game I continue to play after 2600+ hrs since release; simply taking a small D&D break due to a huge sale found on GOG. And I love taking Sneak & Archery for all of my DB's, and while I can one shot many foes, there are plenty remaining that take a bit more planning and work. But that is my game; others may differ.

Not very inspirational, but playing Skyrim I can't seem to break the mold of trying to make good male Nords. And lacking creative imagination...eh, anyway, here's my current. Name's Dane.

It's nice to be able to go anywhere, shape who your protagonist is, decide how your character will handle the world around you, and chose what you want to do in the grandiose landscape that awaits you the moment you escape Helgen. It's been a lot of fun to play Skyrim as the characters I create; it helps immerse me in the fantastical worlds of the Elder Scrolls.
