How far south.Other players recommend going there from Helgen.

This is the grand tree quest.

I looked for it, didn't find it and went through a bunch of ambushes. So I guess I'll try again in the next day or so.

If you need to get the dagger, that is close to Helgen. To actually get to the location in the Southern wastelands, I usually head there either from Riften or Windhelm. If you are taking the quest follower with you, I recommend taking a carriage to those locations; maybe even using Fast Travel to get as close as possible, as his AI pathing is rather poor.

Eldergleam Sanctuary is directly East of Fort Amol, and S-E of Mixwater Mill which lies on a road between Riverwood and Windhelm. While the Mill can be a good place to start, that follower does not like to cross water; may take a few attempts to get there.

I played around with Skyrim yesterday and found that it seems to like my new video card, as it didn't CTD despite my mod list and .ini tweaks remaining largely unchanged. Skyrim Monitor showed system memory staying below 2.5GB but video memory was often going over 2GB. My former video card had 2GB of memory, the new one has 3GB.

This is with texture mods like Skyrim HD textures Lite (2k), SMIM, Better Snow (not exact name), 4K Spriggans, HD Hair (2K), CBBE (2K/4K), HD Mountains (2K), and Realistic Water 2.0 (1K/2K), to name the big ones. Also still running uGrids 7, FX Injector, and ENB CTD mod. If this continues I might bump it back to uGrids 9.

I ran all over the place including toward cities (where I used to CTD repeatably) and while system memory jumped about 256MB or so doing that, I never CTD, with the new video card. For reference, former video card is GTX680, new is GTX780 Ti.

congrats.
So its the video demands that causes issues.
I 've noticed lines occasionally appearing on the screen. They don't cause issues.I have had to reset a few times but that's due to dust in my machine and not the game I think.

I tried the Windheim carriage thing but there seems to be more issues as far as bandits and monsters I believe than going through Helgen.

Thanks.

If you're seeing "lines" and other artifacts, you could be suffering from video card overheating (due to the dust you mentioned). You should clean out the dust and ensure proper ventilation, or you might end up with a hardware failure.

Sweet! Congrats!

Looking at your list, you may wish to take a glance at Better Shaped Weapons (meshes allowing for thinner blades and sheathes, so any texture mods remain fine), Immersive Icicles (less plastic appearances), and Detailed Terrain and Tree LOD. These are not as used as some others, so maybe overlooked.

My card is not even as good as your old one, so I avoid 4K textures, but still am able to maintain fairly stable play with ca. 70 plug-ins. I did reach my CTD limit near Riften once due to higher textures, but this solved itself when I dismounted from horseback and walked to the city.

It appears you are ready for the next season of games!

Thanks for the heads up.

The legendary version I have has Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn as add ons.

Are they any good and what do they do for the game as far as improving it ?

Opinion: Dawnguard offers a lot of behind the scenes content, as well as an in-game quest which can be played by a couple of new factions. If played separately, it may feel a bit Fed-Ex, as locations continually span the map. However, if integrated into the usual life of the DB, it offers a purpose to use less travelled paths and view obscure areas. Plus the new content is beautiful.

Dragonborn offers new locations, and seemingly immerses the older TES Players with Morrowind based themes. Lots of great treasures, spells, and abilities can be gained, and offers a change of pace. However, it generally plays the same way every time, so the replay value is not as high as it was for DG for me. Still, I like the chance to glimpse what SkyWind may resemble, and the Grand Wizard Neloth is my fave NPC in the game.

Hearthfire offers the console Player a chance to have up to three customized homes, plus they can adopt children if they wish. While the latter is not my cup of tea, it is good to see some new faces added to the game for children and stewards.

Thanks Elhanan. Test driving this card before rebuilding my computer at year-end for Witcher 3, etc. Looking to drive a 4k display eventually.

@Angrywolves: to add to what was said earlier...

Dawnguard provides my favorite companion, and the quests overlap the main quest a bit so it's helpful if you do them together, otherwise it can feel a bit like what Elhanan described.

Hearthfire lets us build up to three of our own homes (something I enjoyed when I did construction for a living), though they tend to be quite cluttered after adding furniture. I'm not big on having kids so the adoption thing is out, but it is nice seeing more kids in the game.

Haven't gotten around to Dragonborn yet due to prior technical issues preventing me from playing, but I understand it provides an interesting experience, the first time through at least. Also adds things to the blacksmithing menus.

Good luck with that.

Are you planning on getting Eternity and/or the pc version of DAI ?

Just curious.

Kinda fed up with the BSN, won't say why, don't want a ban.

But I have Skyrim and I feel I need to spend more time with that. And leave the BSN alone for a while.

Which companion did you like ?

One player online says don't buy a house early as it attracts dragons ?

I have the money to buy one.Should I just wait or go ahead ?

Good luck guys.I will read this response and go on my Skyrim sabattical for a while.Good luck.

Hearthfire homes like Dawnguard are better spread over time. Personally, I would wait and use Vanilla homes at first.

I dislike Followers as a rule; the AI and pathing is annoying. I play solo unless forced to take a companion along for the quest. That said, from what I have seen others take, the archers and spell-slingers seem less pushy than the Tanks. Enjoy the break!

Just discovered something odd this afternoon that I'll share on the off chance someone can benefit from it.

On x-box, If you get speech up to 100, take the perks to add 1000 gold to every store and let you invest 500 gold in most stores, then make speech legendary to get all the perk points back, you still get the extra shopkeeper gold, and you can still invest in stores too.

At least that bug's beneficial, as opposed to some others...

I ended up uninstalling Dawnguard due to the random vampire attacks. Well, I moved it to a USB and then removed the USB from the 360. It was not going to mess with another playthroughs, lol.

I've played this game for hundreds and hundreds of hours. The highest my speech skill ever got to was like 73.

How do people get to 100?

The same for restoration. I play without using a single health potion so I know I use restoration *far* more often than anyone else. The highest I ever got it to was 71.

^ Lots of exploration, and lots of talking. Image IPB My speech is always one of the first ones I max.

My favorite is Teldryn Sero. Also, in no particular order: Jenassa, Eola, Belrand, Cicero, and Ghorbash the Iron Hand. Sometimes I forget how annoying Mjoll is, and take her along. I like Serana, but I've had too many bugs with her on xbox to keep her outside of DG.

One player online says don't buy a house early as it attracts dragons ?

I'm pretty sure that's not what does it. I was thinking it had to do with when you go to Bleak Falls Barrow and/or continuing with killing the dragon outside Whiterun. I had one run where I didn't do any of that until around level 20. I only saw about 3 dragons total in that time.

That said, the Falkreath house does seem to attract more bandits, giants, vampires, etc. than the other two Hearthfire houses.

In general, when building a Hearthfire house, I become Thane of that hold, so I have a Housecarl; then recruit someone else to be my Steward. I pack my houses up to the brim with people and animals.

Sure, why not? I mean, you'll need the cash to furnish it, too, but if you've got it, jump on it. Having a place to keep your junk is hella handy.

Is there no way to adopt a dog without adopting kids first? I'd like to give Meeko a home rather than dragging him all over Skyrim. But I don't want to have to get married and adopt some annoying brat first.

You sell lots of little items. I think it registers speechcraft every time you transact, so I know I level it quickly when I'm making jewelry to sell. That's kind of tedious so, you know, use with caution. I've never gotten to 100 in restoration, either. You might have to use the turn undead spells and stuff to get that, not sure.

^ I've never gotten to 100 in Restoration. I got close in one run, when I started using some of those DG spells that I got from the Arkay priest.

Also, I must sell an awful lot of stuff. I never really thought about how or why my Speech was leveling so quickly. Image IPB

If you get the perk from the Thieves Guild you can level your speech really fast.

Just sell all the jewels you get.
One trip to a ruin nets you a lot of money.

Just dont drop it in the middle of Riften like I did....really dont.

What do you folks do with the hundreds of thousands of septims you accumulate through all this crafting and selling?

Take Eola for a night out in Markarth?

^ Sit on it, mostly. My Dragonborns are usually quite wealthy by the time they reach level 30, so cash is more or less just an afterthought. By then, I typically have all houses bought or built, and just start down the hoarding path.

I made a loot stash in my basement of my Heljarchen house.

Had it all organized to.
My Dragonborn could buy Skyrim basically.

I mean really with all that money....huh.

Try and find a Sheogorath's shrine in Skyrim and you'll find those who'll do it for free!

Thanks, just a matter of time and the market maturing on the 4k displays. I have patience since my current hardware is just fine for the moment. Want to try running Witcher 3 on 4k though, ultra settings. That's my eventual goal.

Planning on getting Pillars of Eternity, Witcher 3, DA:I (after seeing how it's received), Soma, and perhaps a few others I can't recall right now.

Want to play some Skyrim this weekend after checking out Elhanan's suggested mods. Should start a new character because I can't remember what I did on the current one, which has become a test character for mods/performance. Image IPB
